The experts say a great subduction quake occurs off the NW coast every 300-500 years. The last one was in 1700. Yikes!

Craig--Are you in your bomb shelter waiting for someting to happen? Remember "occupy until I come". That's what Jesus said.

Low to those living and playing in Ocean Shores, Wa. when the Cascadia subduction Quake hits ! You got about 20 to 30 minutes to hit the first logging road going UP some hilltop off the Copalis Hwy to avoid the 150 foot tidal wave !

No bomb shelters to hide in from a quake in that region of the Planet, thank you very much !

I was on the air in Eugene in 2005 when there was a brief tidal wave warning off the Oregon coast, and because we had a translator on the coast, went on the air with it. That was a surreal experience to say the least. My recollection was that some residents panicked and made some poor choices. This is a real problem to say the least.

ya,

On the Oregon coast, much of it South of places like Otis/Lincoln City have the coast range foothills riding right next to US 101. It is easier in those areas to literally run up a hill on the east side of 101 high enough to escape a tidal wave.

The Northern Oregon coast and much of the south and central Washington coast is another kettle of fish ! Those populated areas are on tidal flats or lowland areas only a few feet above sea level,Cannon Beach, Seaside , Tillamook , much of Astoria and all of Warrenton , although there are some pretty high hills on the east side of 101 in the northern part of downtown Astoria that you could get up fast and out of the way.

Then you cross over into Washington, Ilwaco, Long Beach and most of the way up the coast would be wiped out along with a population that couldnt get to high ground fast enough !

It was a scary thought back in the late 90s when our family used to vacation , summers , in a beach house in Ocean Shores...belonged to one of my 'Ex's' Aunts.

I insisted that we purchase earthquake insurance when we moved to Beaverton in 1998.

We are at 500 feet and about 60 miles from the coast. I still wake up some nights and imagine an earthquake.

We were on travel in December when the snow hit this area. Hopefully, we'll be away for the earthquake.

Cable access TV ran earthquake instructions a bunch of times when we first moved here. The question is not "if" but "when" an earthquake will occur in Oregon.

I have earthquake insurance too, AND a solid rebar reinforced poured concrete foundation that goes down 12 feet in some places (12' below basement level). We're on a hill too and building inspector insisted footings be placed on bedrock.

Still, I prefer no earthquake before my time here is up.

Yes and you'll note I don't mention those quakes lower than 3.0, unless it's in a grouping of larger quakes.

"They are in the middle of nowhere."

Is the Oregon Coast or Crescent City, California in the middle of nowhere? You have forgotten about the 1964 Alaskan Quake, which these current quakes are in the same vicinity. A Tsunami killed Twelve people in Crescent City, while four children were killed on the Oregon Coast at Beverly Beach State Park. Other towns along the Pacific Northwest coast and Hawaii were damaged. Minor damage to boats reached as far south as Los Angeles.

Here is a picture of Crescent City, California after the Tsunami hit:

I have been facetious in some of my posts on this thread, but the truth is the WA/OR coasts are not anywhere ready for a major tsunami. Lessons should have been learned from Indonesia disaster of '04. Fact is, the same thing could, and will happen here eventually. Like I said, the average major subduction quake off our coast is 300-500 years, with the last one in 1700. I'm not an alarmist, but I do believe better planning must be in place. Whether this happens in 2200, or tomorrow, who knows.

There's a spot off Hwy 101 south of Port Orford, north of Gold Beach overlooking the ocean and you can see the entire landform just cascading into the Pacific ocean in slow motion. Any little earthquake or decent sized tsunami will trip it into fast motion that will make headlines across the world. Attempts to rebuild hwy 101 will be laughable for a few years after.

Same situation in CA, just south of SF in San Mateo County. There's an area of US101 called "Devils Slide" that (after being rebuilt for the umpteenth time) will soon have a completed bypass. The engineers finally threw in the towel and bored tunnels through the mountains. Expensive, but it was the only answer. Mother Nature wins again.

It looks like a $330 million dollar project for a relatively short bypass. Interesting.

Here's the latest on the Alaskan Quakes yesterday from AP:

THE 5.9 MAGNITUDE IS EXPECTED TO BE UPGRADED TO A 6.1 ! That's getting into the scary category. Here's the complete story:
__________________________________________________________

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Alaska's Kodiak Island is being slammed by a swarm of earthquakes -- one with a magnitude of at least 5.9.

Richard Buckmaster, a geophysicist at the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo., says the southeast region of the island was hit Saturday by 20 earthquakes with magnitudes of 2.6 or greater.

He says the 5.9 magnitude quake is expected to be upgraded to 6.1.

The quakes are centered southeast of Old Harbor, but there have been no reports that they've been felt.

The earthquakes follow two light quakes that struck the same area less than an hour apart Friday.

Buckmaster says the area is seismically active because the Pacific and North American plates intersect along the island and neighboring Aleutian Islands chain.

I really would have hated to be one of the people in that Starbuck's (see the LA Times Story linked above) when those big pieces of glass started coming down! In this scenario, getting under one of the tables would have provided some quick and relatively effective protection. However, in a stronger quake where heavy stuff starts coming off the ceilings, one might have been crushed by getting under that same table.
