I saw footage on PBS. Man, what a contrast from Bush.

Also on the Newshour, an interview with Robert Gates -- a thoughtful serious man, again, a HUGE contrast from that buffoon Rumsfeld.

I know, we went to war with the secretary of defense we had, not with the one we'd like to have.

The troops sure were happy to see their Commander in Chief. Obama earned every heartfelt handshake and snappy salute. His surprise appearance and succinct speech gives me hope not only for the end of the conflict, but for the long-term care of our returning heroes.

They shouldnt be that happy though, he is just going to move them to Afganistan.

That’s right, some of them will be going to Afgahnistan. To clean up another mess left behind by George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. Had George W. Bush kept his focus where it should have been all along, perhaps we would have captured Osama bin Lanen seven years ago and taken out the Taliban and Al-Qaeda accordingly.

About all I've heard from conservatives the last eight years was that liberals hate the military and the military hates them. Bush used the troops as props - many of his speeches were given with troops in the BG.

Imagine what the conservatives would have said if President Obama had not stopped to see the troops in Iraq. I've already heard that they are dissing him for not paying his respects at Normandy.

The 2004 Bush campaign manipulated photographs of campaign events; adding images of US troops into campaign advertising. Very Karl Rove.

Last night, I heard Generalissimo Newt Gingrich attempting to micromanage the war in Afghanistan from the sidelines (something at which he's very adept -- from the war to the economy and everything in between). Why wasn’t he offering such sage advice when George W. Bush was president?

Newt didn't give advice because there was no end game he could profit from.

Bush was going to go down hard no matter what. There was no positive framing possible. Newt wants no part of that, as he can only lose or be politically harmed.

Now that Obama is President, Newt has something to gain! There is an enemy, and the core of the Republican party absolutely has to have an enemy. Now they've got one, and that is where the action is!

When somebody decides to kibitz like that, they want some of the action. They literally insert themselves into whatever it is, in the hopes they can leverage the outcome.

Rarely is it to actually impact the outcome.

Newt is doing this to open the door for positive framing that will benefit Newt. That's the only reason.

Mc74, you are incorrect with your indelicate analogy. Seed is spilled on the floor around here by folks of all stripes.

We could start a new thread about the many differences between the two administrations when it comes to the treatment of military personnel and their families. Or, we could veer into that territory here and now. You are obviously buying into carefully crafted imaging and comparing apples and oranges.

Two simple questions:

Do you have any military experience or a family member or spouse or close friend in the service?

Is your observation of the relationship between the White House and the troops over the last decade based on personal experience or first hand anecdotal evidence?

If not, please be quiet.

Thank you.

Mc74 is a burnout, plain and simple. It's why he never has anything positive to add.

Newt is setting himself up for a Presidential run, mark it down.

He's all over the right-wing media, even some of the mainstream media. He's got his hair nicely styled, wearing better suits, etc.

That's his end game.

And Newt will get absolutely Newt-ered in a Presidential run.

Even if Obama completely gaffes everything he touches for the next three and a half years.

Totally agreed Warner. He's busy working on his next "contract with America" part two.

That will be a doozy too. Newt is top notch at that kind of thing.

Clearly kgw's lobotomy hadn't taken hold during the time we actually DID go to Afghanistan first and nary a liberal raised a fuss. Unfortunately that was the LAST time Bush did something based on facts.
