Let's get back to some fun and informative stuff. I was listening to my (yes) IPOD on shuffle, and realized I've filled it with lots of deep cuts instead of "hits". Here's what 3 played in a row: 1. "Rennaisance Fair" The Byrds 2. "Speicial Care" The Buffalo Springfield 3. "Seeing" Moby Grape (Yes I do have current music also, these just came up randomly) So, what are some of your favorite deep album cuts?

Spirit is a great one for these. "Dark Eyed Woman" from "Clear" is one of my favs. Others: "Spare Chaynge" Jefferson Airplane; wonderful simple jam. "Cavalry" Quicksilver Messenger Service "Baby You're A Rich Man" The Beatles. It's difficult to call any Beatles a "deep cut", but there's a few out there.

Brianl, I know I sound like a parrot of those who have previously said it but, "You are absolutely right." Balance was an incredible album. My oldest brother is a Van Halen purist, no DLR then it's not Van Halen. I, however, remember the very first video I ever saw on MTV was "Jump" since then the band holds a certain spot in my heart. So, I consider Balance to be the best of the band period. DLR, Van Haggar, DLR, that weird album where they had the lead singer from Xtreme came in, the Michael Anthonyless incarnation of the current band. Balance has great chords. Provocative lyrics that criticize militant orthodoxy. Some of Alex's best drum work of his career (imo). Just a wonderful album.

Be careful now, we are leaking into cuts that were semi-hits or even hits: "Purple Rain", "Cover of the Rolling Stone" as examples. PS: I think "Hello In There" is one of the greatest songs ever written. PSS: I was not at the Zombies show unfortunately. More, Americana version: "Passenger Side" Wilco on "A.M." "Drown" Son Volt on "Trace" "Screen Door" Uncle Tupelo on "No Depression" "Settled Down Like Rain" Jayhawks on "Hollywood Town Hall".

I am loving this thread! You guys found such a diverse and fathoms deep roster of tunes that it was a challenge to find something truly obscure. So, I had to dig really really far down into the stacks of wax to find this one for you all. NICE!! Hey Warner, something has been bugging me, you said I was:
quote:an unabashed "Classic Rock" lover
I think that Classic Rock is really just a format to play 30 year old top-40 hits on. Now if you were to say I was a Classic AOR Fan that would be more fitting. I do enjoy the hits that are played but after hearing them on-air for 30 years my taste at this stage in life is to dig for the forgotten gold that was top-40 material but never made it due to lack of airplay. I am really liking the newer material that many arena rock artists have put out in the last ten years and am greatly dissappointed that it gets "0" airpaly. I sumbit that top-40 from three decades back would not make it today simply due to the fact that the groove on the record has worn through. If you were to take many of the tunes mentioned herein and put them up against the top-40 of the day I think you would ge a majority vote for the less played but still awesome tunes. Don't get me wrong, KGON is still tops in my book, especially "Connect the Classics" were you can request stuff like this and actually hear some of it played. My teen years were during the Prime Time Arena Rock era and AOR radio. Maybe there needs to be an AOR Station which plays great music from the classic artists and not limit itself to music from the charts and especially not ignore current material from those same artists. Example: Check out this song and video from BOC and tell me why it does not get airplay: Take Me Away Or this one from Rainbow: Can't Let You Go Wow: I did not know the following: Ex-Rainbow Members Unite With Son Of Ritchie Blackmore To Form Over the Rainbow Former RAINBOW musicians Joe Lynn Turner , Tony Carey , Bobby Rondinelli and Greg Smith have united with a second-generation Blackmore to form OVER THE RAINBOW. Now, here is a good example of new material from my favorite artist, Sammy Hagar, that should catch some air: LOUD!

Darktemper- You are right on with your description. Even I would tune into a station like that. I just get really tired of the same old tunes that generally get played by those artists. So yeah, my description "Classic Rock" may have been off a bit. I can't believe "Tree Top Flyer" has made it into yet another thread here. What at great song! (stepping back now to avoid the Merkin bomb).

Show Me The Way got some play ... incredible song, and one of my favorite Styx albums. I've been listening to some old school stuff in my collection, and I've dug up more ... "Lakeside Park" - Rush, Carress of Steel "Riff Raff" - AC/DC, Powerage (my favorite Bon Scott album) "Ride On" - AC/DC, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap "Stagefright" - Def Leppard, Pyromania "Mission" - Rush, Hold Your Fire "Song For America", Kansas, Greatest Hits

Yeah it does. That one is on my regular play list too. My favorite version happens to be off the "Show of Hands" live production. "Time Stands Still", with Aimee Mann chiming in, "Manhattan Project" (Those two are on my top list), "Big Money", and "Closer to the Heart" from that live collection are what I listen to most.

For sure. Well, I would turn it into a SAGA one, or perhaps the FIXX, but I think I'm the odd man out! RUSH is common ground! I've been chipping away at acquiring some of these. Absolutely great tunes on this thread. The problem for me is I love lots of music. It's a tempoary experience though. Once in a while, something absolutely resonates, then it gets on the "to be played always" list. Those are very few and far between. Actually, Toad The Wet Sprocket -- "FEAR" is now on that list. Just can't let that one go. So there is mood music, and a diverse collection is great for expressing that. Then there is music that speaks to the core of who I am. Two different things, and I suspect the reason for the convergence on RUSH!!

Some of the Rush songs listed are not "deep cuts' since they've were beat to death by classic rock format stations. You want deep cuts from Rush? I'll give you a few deep cuts: Working Man Finding My Way 2112 Overture/Temples of Syrinx When prog AOR died, so did these songs. Too long for classic rock. or something more recent like The Main Monkey Business You won't hear them play that on the radio, not because of length but because it's an instrumental. I can appreciate Darktemper's love of classic rock, but as it has been said it's just another form of Top40 hits. from The Entertainer - Billy Joel I am the entertainer, I come to do my show. You've heard my latest record, It's been on the radio. Ah, it took me years to write it, They were the best years of my life. It was a beautiful song. But it ran too long. If you're gonna have a hit, You gotta make it fit-- So they cut it down to 3:05.

I've heard Working Man quite a bit on KGON over the years, and I hear it all the time on the Rock Show channel on Muzak that I have at my restaurant. Rush is so defined by Neil, the lyrics and his craft with percussion, but Working Man is all Alex. I never realized how f'n good Alex is until I saw them live ... Dark and I, what ten rows back right in front of Alex two years ago at the Gorge, I stood there in a puddle of my own drool. And yes, any Classic Rock thread will turn into a Rush circle-jerk for me because, as far as I am concerned, it's God's music. I'll shut up now.

White Punks was actually a hit, but not in the U.S. top 100. It reached 28th in the U.K. Motley Crue even covered the song, a fact on wikipedia that I didn't know, not being a big M.C. fan. Other deep cuts for The Tubes might be Proud to be an American, or "Smoke (La Vie en Fumér)" They were great in concert when they started out. Prairie Prince still can be found bangin on the drum all day in Todd Rundgren's touring band. ******************************* "Dancing Madly Backwards (On a Sea of Air)" Captain Beyond from Captain Beyond "Vulcan Worlds" Return To Forever from Where Have I Known You Before "Race With Devil on Spanish Highway" Al DiMeola from Elegant Gypsy "Virginia Plain" Roxy Music from Roxy Music "Golden Country" REO Speedwagon from REO/TWO "Release" Pearl Jam from Ten "The Watcher" Hawkwind from Doremi Fasol Latido "Last Train To San Antone" Peter Green from Whatcha Gonna Do

"My Clone Sleeps Alone" - Pat Benatar "Everywhere I go" - Cure or Cult, can't remember which. (It doesn't have an ID3 --I snagged it from my early KNRK archives) "All my Frustrations" - James (also from that same archive --I dumped a few weeks of NRK to DVD a while back. Fun to pick through.

Hell no I'm not kidding!! Tons of good tunes there. Music for the soul. And on par with RUSH. (ducks tomato highly likely coming from Brianl!!) And "The Genius Position" has got to be one of the sweetest band names ever. What happens with this is I go on a binge when it comes up, then I forget for a long while. It's a nice treat each time that way. I've been authoring new course content all week. that's best done to a wide set of music. Most of the mentions I have just came up on the shuffle play.
