Does anyone know where Art Smart might be these days? Art was the night jock at KEX in the mid sixties. Played an electronic keyboard on air, and left broadcasting to become a Chiropractor. We worked the night shift together for 3 years.

Ed: If you know his real name, you can google that with Chiropractor, to see what comes up.

I saw him on "Stars of Tomorrow". I remember them making note of his unusual name and saying he was a Disc Jockey. I forgot what he did on the TV show.

Ditto Stoner.

One of my inspirations. He even let me come in a couple of times to watch him work.

I am still massively grateful to Art and many Portland broadcast pros whom I called (or just dropped in on) when I was a kid wanting to be a DJ. Person after person let me into their studios to hang in the corner and watch them create the magic. Radio and Television. Amazing spirit of sharing.

Thank you all.

Thanks for the Park Rapids, Minnesota reference. I'm going to try to track him down there. We were good friends.

Here's an update. I just spoke with Art's former wife, who lives in Park Rapids. She tells me that Art moved to Alabama about 10 years ago. He gave up his chiropractic practice after being injured in the crash of an ultra-light airplane he built himself. The phone number she had for him has been disconnected. So, I'll keep trying.

I've located Art. Thanks for all your help everyone. Art is retired and now lives in Irvington, Alabama. about 9 miles from the hurricane prone Gulf Coast. He says Katrina made for a rough ride. I've given him the web link to this conversation. Turns out it was not an "ultra-light" plane he crashed, but a European model he built from a kit.

This board is amazing: First, we look for someone we haven't seen in over 40 years, who happens to pop up, searching for someone else we haven't seen in at least that and lo and behold, he shows up too!

re:art smart. one of the great characters in portland radio. those of us who worked with him found him very entertaining. I remember he used to be in trouble most days for using the word "crap" with great frequency.

Art and I have been able to hook up via Skype on the Internet. We both marvel at how old each seems to have become.
