quote:

A Conservative is someone who believes in

1. Life
2. Personal Responsibility
3. Less Government
4. The Founding Principles

Only a home-schooler would somehow come to understand that believing in the founding principles would justify making others choices for them. And "less government" isn't government that works. It's just not very much government.

I think I'll take the core idea that government DOES work, over the idea that it does not.

quote:

Conservatism is key to America because it keeps America on track in morals, in the size of government, and in the people's power. If we lose track of what we believe, then we will lose track of America's most important ideals.

Translation: Conservatives know what is best for you, and by extension the rest of the nation.

Nice kid. Too bad somebody is working hard on screwing him up.

I do agree with Skybill that the kid is impressive. Meaning, well spoken, intelligent and a natural gift for gab.

I'm not bothered by his viewpoints and the fact that at 14 he has some concrete positions. It will be interesting to watch as his life unfolds and when adulthood and those responsibilities begin to affect ones decision making if he will still hold to his current belief system.

Let him ride the wave for now he's earned it and deserves to be heard like any other person.

This kid will be exactly like a good buddy of mine who can't think outside of his little box thanks to the indocrination his ultra conservative parents did to him as a child.

I'm standing with Vitalogy here. Brain Washed from the moment others became aware of his great talents.

And I absolutely do think he's got fantastic talent.

It's too bad others have a grip on him like that. Maybe he is smart enough to come to some awareness outside the bubble. If he does, look for one hell of a backlash. You read it here first!

Having said those things, it's completely possible to sort out his time in the spotlight for achieving his works as young as he did, and clearly articulate the harm his mentors have done, and will continue to do.

My hope is that he remains this sharp, pierces through and then we will find out what he really thinks.

magic_eye: Of course! However, I am quite happy to support that opinion. I don't think conservatives here will like it. Let's just say I posted what I think and leave it there. Going farther down that road is going to get really, really ugly.

Right now, the kid is a tool. When he realizes that, (and I hope he does, and would help him in that, if I ever had the chance) like I said, the push back won't be pretty.

Of course the biggest irony is that the conservative party is so in the hole politically with little clout and respect it takes a smart 14 year old to give them hope.

I never said I agreed with the kids ideas. They are still the same old out of touch ones we've been hearing for years. The only difference is a child is saying them which for some make them "more innocent" sounding then they actually are.

Even his parents are noting that he doesn't truly understand those grey areas in life. That comes in time and it will challenge him particularly those in his own age group who are smart enough to equal his fervor and debate skills.

It's those "grey areas" that Conservatives seem to have a real problem with in general.
That requires thinking things through, when "cut and paste" is soooo much easier.

I did not watch the video on the link (yet).
But this kid was interviewed by Thom Hartmann when he was at CPAC.

He is smart and articulate, but he did come off (IMHO) as kind of obnoxious, and intolerant.
These traits fit in with today's Republican Party. But hopefully when the party restructures, they'll have grown out of that.
Not holding my breath though.

If he is as smart as he appears and eventually moves beyond dogma it will be intersting to read some of his future books.

Of course all the liberals don't like/agree with him, he doesn't CONFORM to what they insist is right.

As Mason Proffit said in "Two Hangmen": He was guilty then of thinking, a crime much worse than all.

As I rode into Tombstone on my horse, his name was Mack
I saw what I'll relate to you, going on behind my back
It seems the folks were up-in-arms, a man now had to die
For believing things that didn't fit, the laws they'd set aside
The mans name was "I'm a Freak". the best that could see
He was the executioner, a hangman just like me
I guess he'd seen loopholes from working with his rope
He'd hung the wrong man many times, so now he turned to hope
He talked to all the people from his scaffold in the square
He told them of the things he found, but they didn't seem to care
He said the laws were obsolete, a change they should demand
But the people only walked away, he couldn't understand
The marshals name was "Uncle Sam", he said he'd right this wrong
He'd make the hangman shut his mouth, if it took him all day long
He finally arrested Freak, and then he sent for me
To hang a fellow hangman, from a fellow hangmans tree
It didn't take them long to try him in their court of law
He was guilty then of "Thinking", a crime much worse than all
They sentenced him to die, so his seed of thought can't spread
And infect the little children, that's what the law had said
So the hangin' day came 'round, and he walked up to the noose
I pulled the lever, but before he fell I cut him lose
They called it a conspiracy, and that I had to die
So to close our mouths and kill our minds, they hung us side-by-side

And now we're two hangmen, hangin' from a tree
That don't bother me, at all
Two hangmen, hangin' from a tree
That don't bother me, at all

Actually, he's not yet really had the chance to think.

When he is exposed to a greater set of perspectives, then thinks, then talks about it, we might then know something about who he is and what he thinks.

Right now, it's a side show. Nothing more.

Yeah, but he's singing Skybill's anthem, so he must be kid genius.

If Rush and this kid are the best the GOP can offer up, woe is them.

Them and John Boehner, still claiming embryo's destined for the garbage can are "lives" that should be saved.

In 2009, this is enough to make anyone laugh out loud at the agenda of the sinking right.

What's really hilarious to watch is that if this kid had been singing praises of the liberals, I don't care if he was only 5, you all would be falling all over him!!!

Yes kids are parrots up to a point. When that parrot starts to understand more sophisticated concepts and then interjecting their own opinions and reason ( albeit immature) then you have as a parent great ground work for conversation if the parent(s) or adults in his life choose to go there.

We all have to fall on our faces in life. We all need to be humbled at some point. Sure this kid has some personal traits I don't find all that appealing and like KSKD pointed out it does have a circus element to it.

But I'm willing to give the kid a break. I think we all get a little intrigued when a 14 year old speaks part of our adult language so well. There are two neighborhood kids on my block in high school who talk the language of chemistry and biology with great confidence. Once they get into the "real" world the language changes and those damn "grey areas" show up.

It's tough watching poor Bill have to carry the right-wing side of this board, now that Herb and Deane have apparently taken off. I kind of feel sorry for him. Bill seems like an otherwise nice guy.

Maybe we could get this kid to login and help him, eh?

Skybill is a nice guy, BTW

Thanks Doug!

I suspect most if not all the folks that post on this board are nice guys and gals.

I've only met 3. I've met you, Brianl and Alfredo.

I met Alfredo Saturday at the Hamfest in Puyallyp and we were discussing that exact thing.

We both said that we would look forward to another PDXradio get together.

Some of us just have different opinions. That doesn't make any one of us more right or wrong than another, it just means we have differing views on things.

That's what makes this board, this area and this country great. It would be very boring if we were all the same.

I'll second that. It's growing to be time people...

And you are quite welcome Skybill! I wouldn't hesitate to say it. Hope you and yours are well.

Having that kid here would be killer! We all would be challenged to our limits I suspect, and he would grow huge! Maybe someday he will find a community of peers to push him down that road. He's got huge potential.
