Yesterday, I heard Phil Hendrie announce that KLSX, Leykis's flagship station, will be changing formats, and Westwood One will stop syndicating the show. The Wikipedia article on Tom Leykis confirms this, saying that the show's cancellation is effective tonight.

Yes, Leykis talked about it yesterday for quite awhile. He had very kind words for CBS radio.

I haven't listened to Leykis in years. I remember he used to brag about how much money he was making. I wonder, with the lousy housing market in California and the stock market tanking, plus the cancellation of his show, whether he is still bragging?

Is Hendrie gloating about the demise of "Combover Boy?" On the latest Talkers Magazine list, Leykis ranks (#54) right below Hendrie (#53).

I am listening to Tom right now. He has a contract so I guess they are going to be paying him large $$$ to sit at home and type on his MySpace page.

I worry that without a good drive time show and saddled with that unlistenable Miller show during the AM drive, The Talker is a likely target for a flip or just go dark... the signal is pretty terrible.

There was a lot of dead air after what sounded like a hard automated break for a PSA... They are now running a rerun of Tom Leykis...

Off goes the radio... probably won't be doing much listening to AM anymore...

After Leykis signed off his live show, 970 played pieces of several different episodes. It seemed quite apropos that one of these shows was about people who are in desperate financial straits.

I did tune in just before 5 today and heard his sign-off. Why was his last show only 2 hours - anyone know?

Did he say what his career plans are? Just curious.

Because the LA station fliped format at 5 p.m.PST. He has a no-compete-no cut contract. When it is up or they agree to end it. He will come back somewhere. IMO.

In regards to Leykis not understanding women: I'm guessing Leykis's four divorces were not part of his "act."

I used to love when Tom would talk about his experiences in the broadcasting industry or tell stories about growing up. He had a really great talent for telling stories in a way that listeners could relate to them. I also liked his somewhat unorthodox take on current events (like one time in 1995 when a number of people died in a US heatwave, when some very simple measures could have saved their lives). I loved his "Ask the Atheist" segment. What turned me off to his show was "Leykis 101."

Today, Rick Emerson made an interesting comment about Leykis's show. He said that he first heard the program in 1994, and at that time, it seemed like a revelation. In 1994, Emerson said, talk radio was largely people doing political shows, trying to imitate Rush Limbaugh, and generally not doing a very good job of that. Leykis, Emerson said, made him realize that talk radio could be about pop culture and lifestyle topics; it didn't all have to be political.

Leykis's show was terrific when he started his syndication in 1994. I used to be a big fan. But I agree, Alfredo: once he evolved it into "Leykis 101" - a Howard Stern wanna-be - he became tiresome and repetitive, and dull.

Not that I found Leykis offensive - I just found his show in the last several years dull and repetitive. Not entertaining - so I stopped listening a while ago.

I actually agree with Leykis on a whole number of things (not everything), particularly his political views, knowing them as I do from his earlier years. Not all of ideas on dating a crazy, either.

Tom Was the ONLY reason I started listening to Talk Radio. I was lucky enough to enjoy countless shows. However, moving to California 3 1/2 years ago I kind of lost touch with the shows. They were playing musical formats before L.A. did. I also enjoyed Rick Emerson. They were the only two that I ever listened to . Other than that, I listened to music. My only option that I like is Mike Savage Nation. I agree with 99.99 % of everything Tom talks about. It's all for show mostly, but of course that is to be expected, anyone should know that. But while it might all be for show, It's for the most part actually true. He tells it like it is. I hope he comes back stronger than ever so I can once again enjoy his show on my afternoon drive! Tom Leykis, Better than 95% of anything else on radio.

"IMO. Shallow wanker. Puker. Doesn't understand women."

Of course that's what Leykis is Eastwood. Of course he doesn't understand women. Leykis does male talk radio, and he is one of the very best at it. Period.

Tom Leykis is guys talking to guys about guy stuff. Locker room radio. You don't like him? Neither do I, but that's irrelevant. His show isn't meant for people like us.

I get why KLSX flipped. It sucks, but it's a reality of the business today. What I don't get is why his syndication died too. Anybody know the story there?

Reason: Before KLSX canceled Leykis, Westwood One had announced on February 5th that "The Tom Leykis Show" would end its syndication on March 1st. At the time, Leykis said he would continue on KLSX and listeners would be able to hear him on the stations website.

Look at the share price of WW1. They have to make big cuts to stay alive. IMO. I remember when WW1. traded in the twenty to twentyfive dollar range. And yes Tom is better than 95% of whats on the air out there right now. And to you Leykis haters out there, how do you know what Tom is doing unless you also were listeneing..Hmmmm...Sounds like Tom is doing a great job. Also the board work on 970 was Baaaad for the last hour of his show, compared to the old Hot talk 1080 KOTK.

Wouldn't it be interesting if the Fairness Doctrine were reinstated to apply to shows like Tom Leykis?

Indeed, all three of the above are very skilled in playing to their audiences. My recollection of the mid 1990s was that it seemed like there were a whole bunch of Jerry Springer wannabes on daytime TV and a bunch of Rush Limbaugh wannabes on the radio. None of the wannabes were as good as the originals. In some ways, I think that Leykis turned into a Howard Stern wannabe, which I consider a pity.

Well, I want to defend the guy a little. He can reinvent himself, and that's how he's survived as long as he has. So he'll invent himself again, and he'll get a job. Leykis was an interesting and provocative political talker in the early 90's, and he does an astute food and wine show, in which he shows an intelligent grasp of subtlety and nuance. Interesting that he, or at least his act, fails to exhibit the same when it comes to women. But even in his misogynistic "Leykis 101," he gives some morsels of good advice. Don't marry before 25, for crying out loud. Establish a career. Stay free for as long as you can. But a young man needs to be smart enough not to follow the rest of his act-like-a-jerk list, or else you'll die a lonely wanker.

uh, I don't believe Leykis was "brought down"

He made more money and had a longer run in the most recent incarnation of his career.

Being cancelled by WW1 due to a format change is hardly being brought down either.

One thing occasional Leykis listeners fail to realize is that his advice is for young men who want to get laid.

NOT mature men who want relationships or marriage.

Telling a 22 year old male how to get laid more is way different than telling a 32 year old man how to attract a life long partner.

note the distinction. His demo is YOUNG MEN WHO WANT TO GET LAID...

Leykis will do fine, he will be back on the air soon with a syndicator who will actually gain him affiliates instead of lose them.

Does anyone remember the rants he would go on about how cheap and sleazy WW1 was to work for? I'm sure there were some bad feelings between he and some at WW1.

But what are Leykis fans going to do without his Flash Friday?
Or did he quit doing that? I quit listening to him years ago. Just wasn't all that interesting anymore. After listening to most of his callers, I figured his target wasn't just 22 yr old guys, it was dumb 22 yr olds. You could tell by most of the ones calling him. He often would conclude many calls by stating that advertisers could also reach that target audience by advertising with him....referring to how stupid they seemed.
Tom never took himself seriously. He laughed all the way to the bank. Same as Springer. He always said his show was stupid but if they were going to pay him to do it, he would.

I guess that now I don't feel so bad: when I was 22, I was focused on trying to get myself back on track academically so that I could graduate college and get a job. I wasn't getting into the (mis)adventures that many of Tom's male listeners seemed prone to getting themselves into (i.e. being forced into marriages, getting girls pregnant, and racking up huge credit card debts). Perhaps the reason for that was that when I was 22, Leykis's show hadn't become all "Leykis 101." :-)
