Dr. Doug & Skippy had one of the more successful shows in the market! I can't imagine why Entercom would pull the plug on this show, while the more costly Nelson & Terry are still employed.

The Buzz is an enjoyable station but they need to work on the music because the Music on the BUZZ is CRAP!!! What 30 year old woman listens to David Archuletta?? Seriously!

THe Buzz Brags about the new variety of music they have and yet its just as bad, if not worse than before.

I listen to Nelson and Terry than turn the station off.

JT:

I have to agree, the Buzz's music variety has (once again) become too stale. The variety was much more enjoyable last year, when they were mixing in more Alternative and Rhythmic material. Saying that they are now playing more variety than ever before, is completely false. Listeners are not fooled.

Thats what I Just don't get! They spend all this time and effort getting great talent on the station and they do nothing with the music!

The Music is so stale and so unlistenable. The Buzz will NEVER win in the ratings until they fix the stale music!

Maybe it's the fact that "morning radio shows" are a thing of the past. In fact, DJs themselves are rapidly becoming a thing of the past. Listeners just don't care anymore, at least the younger ones. They view radio as an ipod with commercials, and anything over and above that is expendible and annoying.

This blog post from their myspace:

Hi its Dr Doug here. I have always said I will give you the straight scoop and real tralk. This is as real as it gets.

It is a sad day.

After nearly 3 years of fun on 97.1 Charlie Fm Skippy and I got called into the office after we got off the air and told that the show will be discontinued.

Skippy and I were completely blindsided.

Almost 3 years ago Skippy and I did afternoons for 105.1 The Buzz. We were the #1 rated afternoon show in Portland.

Z100 offered us a morning showand a nice contract to do mornings. We packed our bags and get ready to go to Z100..
Thats when our company, Entercom communications created a morning show opening at 97.1 Charlie FM. The promoised to market us, let people know where we were going, They promised a budget to do contests and have a producer in studio and off air producer.

Shortly after we started they told us we would get no marketing budget and that we were not allowed to tell people prior to leaving 105.1 Where we were going. Many people thought we disappeared.

Shortly after starting at 97.1 Charlie Fm our boss told us to not talk much, play lots of music. We were shocked to find out we couldnt do the show we did for years at 105.1 that brought us to #1. It became clear the job at 97.1 was not what we had signed on to do. They cut the budget and took away Snackbar, our producer and never did give us a promotional budget to do contests. Skippy and I relized in a hurry they created the morning show opening at 97.1 so we wouldnt go across the street to Z100 and take our large audience to a different company. It is called Defense in the radio world. Skippy and I were the pawns. At least it felt like it.

Don't get me wrong, I am not being a sour ex employee with an axe to grind. There were some great people we worked with and the thing that inspired us to wake up early every monring was YOU, the listeners. Never have I had the chance to meet and talk to such amazing people. Through all our appearances, all of our events and functions I was blessed to get to know some incredible people. 12 Spirit Mt Casino party busses with 56 winners on each bus! The great listener lunches, listener breakfasts, Listener dinners.

Dr Doug and Skippy nights at PGE park for the Beaver games, The Cutest baby contest, Livin Large parties,The Small cities tour each summer, The clients, wow the super clients that had faith in us to promote their businesses..Rivermark community credit union, Miles Family of dealerships, Comcast, Go Wireless, Spirit Mt Casino ! Skippy and I worked hard off air to help promote and grow these businesses! We will miss our daily relationship with these folks!
The program Director Dan P at 97.1 had a different morning show in mind then the one we were doing. He never really felt our show althought the ratings continued to grow, advertisers loved the results and the response from callers and emailers was awesome! Dan wanted us to play more music and talk less, he did not see the value of contests and games on air and we respected his wishes as our boss. We wanted to have fun on air, interact and visit with listeners..find out things about them and actually care for people ( thats why we did unemployed person of the week, props and kudos etc) To Dan the music is what mattered. After years of being #1 we wanted it to be all about YOU the listeners.

When it was announced that Dan would become the program director of 105.1 AND 97.1 several months ago, we knew our days were probably numbered. It appeared that all the eggs were put in 105.1's basket and the station that had been clobbered in the ratings would make him look like a hero if it went to #1. Skippy and I with the show we wanted to do, would take away from 105.1 growing the way Dan wanted it to. We are thankful to Jack, Erin and Clark for the chance to live our dreams and do a morning show. We are sad it did not work out the way we hoped.

I truly think that when one door closes another one opens up. Please keep checking back here..and PLEASE tell your friends and forward this link to them to become friends if they aren't already. We will blog daily or as much as possible. PLEASE leave us message and notes...I am going to miss the interaction each day. If you have never called or messaged us before and I have not had the chance to say THANKS..THANK YOU FOR LISTENING! without you this would not be possible for us to live out our dream.

below is the phone number for Dan P 97.1s Program Director ( i didnt give you his #) Please be respectful and professional. Also the address if you feel inclined to let them know your feelings about cancelling the Dr Doug and Skippy Show .

If you patronize the business I listed earlier tell them THANKS for the years of advertsing on our show.

Keep in touch. we will have a website and new email addresses in the coming days.

Much Love,
Dr Doug

I'm not a fan of morning show type radio, but I do listen to 97.1 while getting ready in the morning and have grown to like the show and also liked that they played music as well. It's decisions like this that totally sour me on radio in general. The people in charge of 97.1 obviously don't know how to manage a station. Just another example of why the radio station business model has become nothing more than a turd swirling the bowl while leaving streak marks as it goes down.

I liked Dr. Doug and skippy, They put on a good show and did the best they could with what little they had to work with.
What I find interesting and a bit pathetic is that the show was not cancelled because of low ratings, the show was cancelled because it was taking away listeners from Nelson and Terry.

Now Charlie is just a worthless juke box.

And if thats how it was done then I hope Nelson and Terry find themselves out of a job as well.

You're right, Bob. How many morning shows has Z100 been through in the last 3 years? Even if they had lasted through the many rounds of cuts and layoffs at CC, they would have been blown out for syndication eventually. They should be happy that Entercom bought them a few extra years of employment in this market.

If Dr. Doug & Skippy had stayed in afternoons at 105.1, they could still be on the air. However, I'm sure the Z100 morning show offer was one they couldn't refuse. I'm sure Entercom had never intended to put a morning show on Charlie FM, but they did so just to keep Dr. Doug and Skippy away from Z100. It was obvious that Dr. Doug & Skippy (on Charlie) would take listeners away from Nelson & Terry. It's sad that Dr. Doug & Skippy were the ones to be let go. I would say they had the best show in the whole Entercom cluster.

I can think of at least two shows in that cluster that are a lot better. Mike & Amy. Daria & Mitch.

If Doug & Skippy knew they couldn't do the show they wanted to do at Charlie, they should have been networking & sending out packages to PDs who might like their kind of show.

Stoner, are you high? I know a LOT of females who LOVE IT. Im not a big fan but the numbers for Daria and Mitch are the best at the station and blow N&T out of the water. I have to agree with Stoner, the Daria and Mitch show is going downhill quick. Why on earth did they have a live wedding on air last week? That was the most BORING radio I have ever heard in my life! IT went nowhere. Even my girlfriend couldn't understand why they were broadcasting this. It may sound good on paper, but think of your average listener listening in the car, do you honestly think they are going to sit through a bunch of yapping that goes absolutley nowhere.

Getting on the air and yapping about nothing is ridiculous, Having content and show prep is what will keep listeners around. Im not trying to Bash Daria and Mitch because I have heard greatness from that show when it is structured.

No..I'm not the demo. But I thought Chase was brilliant on NRK and is dynamite on the Wolf.
NRK was not my demo either. I have been around the horn long enough to know what sounds good and for the life of me...These 2 love to yap & yap & yap & yap about nothing. I would like to see a PD or Producer reel them in- tighten it up and give it another shot. This happened to Uncle Don Wright at Kisn. Don was magical on Super 62...at Kisn he had 100% freedom and it was never the same. But Don had more talent in his pinky nail than these 2. Its a total mystery to me.

BTW - I happen to be in the demo for the Buzz afternoon show, and I think it's very good. I do think they need to self-edit a bit, but is often laugh-out-loud funny and very relatable. There's lots of seasoned pros on this board, and by now you should all know that what constitutes "good" radio is completely subjective. IMHO Daria is one of the most talented radio people to ever crack a mic.

Daria & Mitch have had some great shows, but I'm still baffled by Daria's "Local Entertainment Guide."

I totally forgot about Mike & Amy, and didn't mean to overlook them. Here in Eugene, that CSN "radio virus" has wiped out 99.5 The Wolf, so I'm usually not listening. :-(

My oldest son is going to be disappointed... Doug and Skippy was his favorite show (or at least it was when he last told me). He even had a place to regularly listen -- my ex bouaght a new vehicle and was able to devote the old car as his primary transportation. I glad my hefty child support is going to such a good cause.

Not being in radio but having had some rather traumatic employment changes in my life, I understand the frustration. You think you are meeting the expectations of your employer and then ... bam... things change and either your duties are different or you are hoping to find someplace new to generate a paycheck! Hang in there and best wishes... My son has good taste so you guys must have been good. (I am more of a K103 demo).

Radioxpert. You might want to give it another shot. I don't listen EVERY single day, but I haven't heard a "Local Entertainment Guide" in 2009.

And I don't think any of these shows need to be the best or worst thing you've ever heard. Mike & Amy, Daria, Mitch & Ted, Doug & Skippy, Cort & Fatboy. These are all good solid shows with different targets. They all have good and bad days. And at the very least, they're local.

As far as shows that go on and on "about nothing".....as opposed to what? They're daily talk shows. They all seem to have their regular features, whatever they may be, but outside of that, what do you suggest they talk about?

Sorry. That sounds bitchy. It's not meant to be. I'm just genuinely curious as to what would appease a panel of vets like yourselves. :-)

From All Access...

Dr. Doug And Skippy Split From Charlie

Dr. Doug & Skippy Exit
Longtime top rated jocks DR. DOUG and SKIPPY and ENTERCOM Adult Hits KYCH (97.1 CHARLIE)/PORTLAND have gone their seperate ways. The duo will be replaced by "CHARLIE GIRL."

Said VP/GM ERIN HUBERT, "The new morning show will be the return of CHARLIE GIRL, aka SHEL BAILEY SHEL has been a morning host in another market and previously hosted the all request hour every afternoon on CHARLIE up until there were cutbacks. She’s very familiar with this particular brand… she gets its uniqueness; she helped launched it; and she will play more of an 'emcee' role to the music in the mornings. This way, we retain a tangible presence in the mornings but one that is more compatible to the overall feel and presentation of the station. DOUG and SKIPPY are outstanding personalities… I think the world of them, and they did a great job for us with CHARLIE. Ultimately, however, for the growth of this brand into a maturing heritage brand, we felt we needed a morning presentation that fit more closely with the overall sound of the station."

I agree that Dr. Doug & Skippy weren't the best fit for Charlie. They were really perfect for 105.1 The Buzz.

Here's an idea: Clear Channel could launch a new Hot AC type format on 105.9, with Dr. Doug & Skippy in the morning. That could really hurt the Buzz.

I agree! It's totally a cost saving measure! DOUG And Skippy were making too much money, it had nothing to do with poor ratings because their ratings were not bad!
Nice way to sugar coat it Entercom. I'll be curious to see how the first book on charlie without them is, THAN Entercom can come and say Yes, we fucked up! I noticed they have thousands of people on their myspace page, and they have a ton of people posting and saying that they are no longer listening to Charlie. One poster says "now you guys are like an Ipod, and I already have an Ipod, we want to be entertained in the morning"

Radioxpert, I doubt CC would waste their time (and more importantly, their money) on another Hot AC in Portland. k-103 is Hot AC leaning and they are likely to move Z100 in a more mainstream direction after they take possession of Jammin. There may be a tiny hole for a modern AC, but they tried that before on 105.9 and failed. Dr. Doug and Skippy would be a terrible fit for anything alternative leaning, like a modern AC.

I have to say the new morning show is pretty boring and bland. I don't consider myself a fan of the typical morning show radio, but I think the people in charge at Charlie made a mistake.

I can only assume that management feels they will save more money by not paying Doug and Skippy than they will lose in advertising revenue and ratings. That kind of business plan is a recipe for failure in the long run.

Like em' or hate em' Charlie is doomed without a morning show! They will never win without a morning show! People can complain and say that they want music in the morning, BUT the fact of the matter is, the "More music" morning shows can't ever get ratings.

Poor Move Entercom, This decision to play mostly music in the morning will not last!

I am in NO WAY hating on her, Im hating on the dumb management at Charlie who killed off a morning show that had great ratings!

Nobody needs or WANTS an all music morning show, WE HAVE OUR IPODS FOR THAT!!

I agree that Charlie Girl is not a bad talent, but there is no way that she should be doing mornings. Entercom fired Doug and Skippy, but keep adding to the Nelson and Terry show? Dan Clark, and Stacey Lynn. What was the reason Doug and Skippy were fired, or was it a budget cut thing?

Regarding Charley, does the station "own" the promos that Doug and Skippy recorded, and are still airing?

I really miss those guys (Doug and Skippy) Skippy sent a very nice, clarifying e-mail to me; I appreciated that he'd take the time to do that. Their morning show, banter and great workout music, made my morning aerobics a lot more pleasurable. Their show helped people wake up, and entertained their listeners through the chore of getting ready for and getting to work --or whatever. I find Charliegirl irritating, her music selections too "all over the place", and her conversation nonsense. Her show would be OK as background music ---wa-a-ay in the background! (credentials: I managed a small-market station in the '80s)
