Archer happend to mention in our monthly jock meeting he was one of the original Magic 107 DJ's. I cornered him later to get this jock line-up:

"Magic 107" KMJK DJ line-up. August 1977.
ARCHER, 6am-Noon.
RICK ELGIN, Noon-6pm & PD (replaced a month later by Cary Curelop. Archer became PD)
RANDY SCOTT, 6pm-Midnight.
LINDA EVANS, Midnight-6am.

Weekends: J.D. FORT & LADY AUDRY "Mistress of the night".

Does anyone have later Magic 107 line-ups?

I don't have the date of the flip to Classic Hits but would say it happened shortly after the sale to Gary Capps which was on March 27, 1987.

I loved Magic 107's format when it first came on. I don't understand why it switched. it was a mellow version of classic hits. similiar to what they had in the late 80s. Tom Morgan was part of that too.He moved to Houston I believe. I remember him from KOIN.

KMJK call letters were assigned previous to the "Magic" designation after KQIV went into receivership and bought by Southern Broadcasting which was gobbled up by Harte Hankes.

Whatever they were doing between Southern's purchase and Victor Ives purchase led to the reel format alluded to below.
The "Magic" 107 that got all the ratings was during the Ives regime.

The first Magic 107 lineup with Ives as GM was:

Thomas & Ross (Brian Thomas and Kevin Ross) Mornings
Alan Budwill (midday)
Cosmic Jon Barry (afternoons)
Steve Naganuma (evenings)
Jack Elder (overnights)
Kent Phillips (news)
Jody Lewerenz (traffic)

While the transaction from Harte Hankes to Victor Ives was closing, KMJK had been playing music off of reels in a semi-automated arrangement on the 1st floor of the Robert Randall's Kristin Square as Al and I were building out the 2nd floor suite of studios and offices. We moved the reels upstairs to the new digs for a short time before Victor and Cos rolled out the new format and the switch to carted music. This was the end of 1982, not sure which month, Steve Naganuma will know.

Later, Thomas & Ross left (long story there), Alan and Kent took over mornings, I forget who was given middays and the rest stayed the same until I went over to KATU in Jan 1985. After that, I don't remember because it wasn't in my face every day.

I remember Steve doing evenings. Didn't he also do overnights once in a while as well or start there? The Morning guys did leave shortly there after I remember not being there for long. It was for a time a great line up!

"Didn't he also do overnights once in a while as well or start there?"

I don't remember. He'll be along to comment soon, I'm sure. I know that Jack was the full time all nighter for the time I was there. He also was manager of our softball team.

"The Morning guys did leave shortly there after I remember not being there for long."

About a year if memory serves. Kevin was a chain smoking creative type who was hard on the equipment. Brian was the Aussie accented one. Unfortunately, they both needed a straight man, so they'd switch off playing that role. Kevin developed a character he'd brought with him, "The Old Timer" and also a shtick about "Ross Island." He'd spend hours in the production room developing these short pieces and they were often quite funny. Both of them spent most of their shift outside the control room flirting with the receptionist and greeting everybody who walked in the front door from fans picking up contest giveaways to the UPS guy.

Loved my part time gig at KMJK with Sinister Cinema Victor Ives.. And Cosmic Jon...'85-'86

Learned to smoke cigars - and of course ticked off the office staff as it went through the air conditioning.. My future wife was elected to talk with me about it and how bad it was for us all..

Thought I'd bring over from the history page a DJ line-up E-Mailed to me from Rick Rydell at KENI Anchorage in June 2005. This is the only KMJK line-up posted on "Portland's Greatest DJ Line-ups" thread:

KMJK DJ Line-up 1986 to 1990:
Those Guys in the Morning (Todd Brandt & Rick Rydell), 6-10am.
Glynn Shannon, 10-3pm.
Craig Johnson, 3-7pm.
Brad Dolbeer, 7-Midnight.
Bob Ancheta, Midnight-6.

I was at KMJK twice 1980-1981 and 1982-1987. When I arrived in 80, Danny Wright had already moved to KJR. Here's the fall 1980 line-up:
6am-10am Bo Rafferty
10am-12noon John Shomby
12noon-3pm Dave McKay
3pm-6pm Pat Clarke
6pm-10pm Chris J. Knight
10pm-2am Chaz Kelly
2am-6am Inessa
Weekends Steve Naganuma & Dave Vincent
While weekends I did fill-in on most shifts including over-nights.
Preston Thompson did mornings for a while and Andy Barber moved into mid-days.

July 1981 KMJK changed to a soft music format. In August 1982, KMJK went back to CHR with this line-up:
6am-10am Thomas & Ross
10am-3pm Alan Budwill
3pm-6pm Cosmic Jon Barry
6pm-12mid Steve Naganuma
12mid-6am Mellow Jack Elder
Kent Phillips, Rosemary Reynolds & Carolyn Meyers in the news dept.

I moved up to 3pm-7pm and Program Director when Jon Barry left in 1986.

Brian Thomas ended up moving over to the Z100 Morning Zoo briefly which split up the Thomas & Ross morning team.

Here's a list of more KMJK CHR names not mentioned above: Eric Worden, Devon, Charlie Busch, Ben Stone, Alex Darby, Dave O'Conner, Dan Dubay, Peter Lett, Chris Nolan, Jim Springer, Jim Allan & Joe Evans.

Larry Coates (with Nelson doing character voices) was the last morning guy on the KMJK CHR format in 1987. Todd Brandt & Rick Rydell were mornings on Q105 in the spring of 1987. So they must have join KMJK (Classic Rock Format) in late 1987.

Craig, around 83-84 I shifted to 6pm-10pm. Ben Stone did 10pm-2am and Alex Darby did 2am-6am. Sorry I do not have firm dates.

In late 1986 when Jon Barry left, this was the line-up:
6am-10am Eric Worden, Francine Raften, Jody Leverenz
10am-3pm Glynn Shannon
3pm-7pm Steve Naganuma
7pm-12mid Dave O'Conner
12mid-6am Dan Dubay
Part-time: Jim Allan, Jim Springer, Joe Evans

Joe Evans used the air name Joe Ryan on KMJK in 79-81. With Big Jim Ryan on Q105 at the time, I had Joe use the last name "Evans" when he returned to KMJK.

"Craig, around 83-84 I shifted to 6pm-10pm. Ben Stone did 10pm-2am and Alex Darby did 2am-6am. Sorry I do not have firm dates. "

This happened in the spring of 84, because I was still there. I distinctly remember Alex calling me at home at 3AM frantically yelling "we're off the air, we're off the air." I rolled over and hit the radio on button and Urgent by Foreigner was playing. "Are you playing Urgent, Alex?" I asked. "yeah, that's what was playing when we went off the air" he replied. I held the phone to the radio for 8 bars. "Now, what were you saying about being off the air, Alex?" Silence on the other end. Finally, "Oh, I put the log down on the console and it released the monitor button. Sorry!"

All in a days work.

I remember hearing Valerie Ring in the mornings on 106.7 KMJK in late 1988.

When transmitting from Mt. Scott, 106.7's signal would often fade in and out, here in Eugene. The FM's from the West Hills, had more solid reception, for some reason.

Radioxpert: I live on the Beaverton side of the West Hills so I to had problems hearing "Magic 107" also. I listened to K296BE 107.1Mhz Beaverton, re-broadcasting Magic between 1985-87.

The Mt Scott antenna site was a slightly lower elevation than most west hills sticks, so that is probably the reason for not covering Eugene as well.

In addition to the west side translator on 107.1, Magic 107 also simulcasted on 1290AM.

K296BE went on the air in summer 1984. It was located along Skyline Dr. right near the edge of Forest Park where it had a great line of sight to Mt. Scott for incoming and a great shot at the west side where the Mt. Scott signal had issues. 10W H plus 10W V. We got nice equipment because Harte Hanks had to pay for it as part of the deal with Victor. I had the receiving antenna custom built by Scala, wound for 106.7 specifically. I forget what Yagis we used for transmit.

With regards to coverage south (Eugene), not only is Mt. Scott shorter than sites in the West Hills plus KMJK was only about 150' above the ground, but due to short spacing with Bremerton was only 94,000 W ERP. Those last 6,000 watts makes a difference mostly on the ratty edge of coverage when there are no terrestrial obstructions. Still, height and power are not the only issues looking south. Because Mt. Scott is further east than the west hills, when you draw a line from Mt. Scott into Eugene, you skirt the foothills of the mountains, especially the area SE of Salem, certainly not helping propagation in that direction.

"Andy: I'd like to find on a map where K296BE was broadcasting from. Was there anything else broadcasting from the site?"

There was an amateur repeater on the pole and some receiving antennae, but no other commercial equipment. It was tall enough to clear the trees, maybe 80'.

The location, best as I can remember (a lot has changed up there since) would be off Skyline on the east side between N.W. Thompson and what is now LIghtning Ridge Dr. The entry drive was a dirt road in a left turn, so if you look there are two places that look vaguely familiar, but Skyline goes through a left turn (as you travel north) at Lighting Ridge Dr. If I drove it, I might recognize but like I said, people have bought land and built on it along that area, so it might not look at all like I remember it.

This would be best guess from satellite/terrain maps:

45°33'18.85"N
122°46'25.40"W

"Was that the same location as the KUPL translator on 98.1?"

Definitely not at the time we put it up.

I remember looking up the info back in H.S. when the translator was operating. I almost want to say that the coordinates for the 98.1 KUPL translator mapped to somewhere near the current Hall/Nimbus WES stop. Next to it, there's a multi-story office building there, and has been for years.

Andy: Many Thanks! The transmitter site from your directions seems to be across from "Skyline Memorial Gardens". Also thanks for dating when K296BE began. I was never sure.

Semoochie: If my memory is right, I believe K251AD 98.1MHz transmitter was very close to S.W. Nimbus Drive & Scholls Ferry Rd. It wasn't on a hill at all. That's just West of Washington Square Mall. It operated from 1995 to 1997.

Hi everyone, I just stumbled across this site... I was "Ben Stone" on Magic 107 from '83-'85, 10 pm to 2 am. I also did voices for the morning show, particularly the "Assistant Public Affairs Director" Butch Getroidel, a Stan Freberg-like character who constantly tried to sneak on the air during Alan Budwill's morning show. I'd been on the air under a different name in Reno and San Jose before coming to Portland. Steve Naganuma had been doing 7-midnight, and Mello Jack 12-6, when PD Cosmic Jon Barry decided to split the shifts further, putting me between Steve and Jack, who went to 6-10 pm and 2-6 am respectively. It was a super-fun time slot and really the last hurrah of great four-hour shift super-intense CHR in PDX. I was a grad student at the time (in theology!), so I'd work on very esoteric papers for the three minutes I had between talk-ups. Loved it!! Jack was very nice to me, but he clearly did not like the switch. Soon, weekender Alex Darby took Jack's 2-6 am slot. I loved my time there, I was fortunate enough to be there at the peak of Magic's run, and Steve was so great to work with.

I did mornings for a Contemporary Christian Radio network for a while (Western Inspirational, which changed its name to Pilgrim Radio) and went into pastoral ministry which is the most fulfilling thing I have ever done. I now pastor at a great church (www.tlc.org) and believe it or not, the lessons I learned about communication in CHR help me every day! I still do voice work for corporate, radio, and satellite clients occasionally.
