About time.

http://columbian.com/article/20090122/NEWS02/701229941

In 2000 or 2001 (I think it was 2001) I was amongst the first class of high-school sophmores in the Evergreen District to take the WASL. Needless to say that was two periods out of the day, for about a week and a half, that I couldn't have been more thankful for! (My Algebra and Biology courses were during the first two periods of the day, right smack when the testing was being held. Naturally, that was like a "Get Out Of Jail, Free" card for me. ;o) Of course, being as we were merely performing the [ahem] "test run" of this thing, our scores toward/against graduation (depends on your point of view) didn't count for snuff.

Now, if I were to take it today, I'm almost certain I'd flunk.....

You will still be tested in grades 3, 5, 8, and 10. It is required by the No Child's Behind Left Act. But maybe our new president will change that.

No Child Left Behind should be left behind.

The other thing that needs to be put into place is paying, keeping, firing etc teachers on their performance not on tenure.

If you can't teach, then out you go.

My daughter was in 5th grade when NCLB was legislated. I heard more complaints from teachers than anyone else.

Oregon actually had some very good programs already in place which was so frustrating as parents. In spite of all that our kids are getting much better educations than my wife and I ever did.

My brother, sister, and two sister-in-laws and both my father and mother-in-law, have or are still working in the education system, and not one of them saw any good with NCLB.
