KATU is announcing that starting Saturday, Circuit City will begin liquidating all of its merchandise. All stores are expected to be closed by March. A contractor was brought in to handle the liquidation and shutdown of the stores, so store warranties will remain in effect. However, all sales are final, meaning that merchandise can't be returned for cash refunds or exchanged. ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST!!

They are also saying to know the price of what you want before you go there looking for a bargain. The purpose of the liquidators that they hired is to recover as much revenue as they can from the inventory. In an article they said that sometimes they actually raise the prices!

Or bring in merchandise from other retailers they "liquidated" and couldn't sell at the raised price.

CompUSA's liquidation last year was awful. I didn't find any bargains. I'm disappointed for the workers who will lose their jobs, but I never cared for Circuit City. It was always a last-resort place to buy anything.

"but I never cared for Circuit City. It was always a last-resort place to buy anything." I understand that idea, but what is amazing to me is, Best Buy basically beat out Circuit City. And that place is to me just as "last resort" as CC. I guess it's more about management, location, etc.

Yeah, I really don't dig BB so much either. I prefer Fry's, Costco, and Office Depot.

Circut City going out of business?? GOOD! I hate that store! about 10 years ago I got a $100 gift card to Circut City for Christmas. Went there, Bought 1 DVD for 13 bucks. 2 months later I came back and bought a bunch of movies that came to 60 bucks. Little did I know, Circut CITY had some BULLSHIT policy on their gift cards where they start DEDUCTING your gift card money, the longer you wait in between purchases. So because I waited two months in bteween purchases with my giftcard, they deducted 20 bucks off my giftcard!! NOW HOW CAN a business get away with this??? What type of BS business practices where they running??? Within the last few years they stoped doing this because THEY HAD TO! But yes, I was one of the victims of their stupid scams, and yes I call this a scam because deducting money off a giftcard because I waited too long in between purchases is LUDICROUS!! SO I am happy they are gone. Their prices were awful, and you could never get any help when you needed some. PLUS there is no way Circut City would be able to survive with BEST BUY! Best Buys are popping up quicker than ACNE on a Teenage guys face!

Maybe Best Buy can absorb "Fire Dog" into their "Geek Squad" and call it "The Firing Squad". Got problems, line up, we will take a shot at it!

Last time I went to CC was about two years ago to buy a Samsung ATSC box, which I returned the next day because its power supply went out and wouldn't even POST, let alone boot up. I'm not going to go into a big review of their "customer service". For now, I'll just say it was "less than marginal". I like Radio Shack, Border's Books and Sears myself. (Query: When Silo went out of business eons ago, didn't Circuit City get ahold of some of Silo's assets?) "...Little did I know, Circut CITY had some BULLSHIT policy on their gift cards where they start DEDUCTING your gift card money, the longer you wait in between purchases. So because I waited two months in bteween purchases with my giftcard, they deducted 20 bucks off my giftcard!!" RatShack had a similar policy (at least they did about 5-6 years ago, when I last received one of their gift cards; don't know if they still do or not). I think theirs was 1 year and 6 months if I remember right. This is one of the many, many reasons I almost never accept gift cards from anyone any more, not even my own family...............

This is why I don't do gift cards period either. There is something like a billion every year of money not used. People forget the cards, small balances not worth it, waiting fees, you name it. All of it is a racket. Better to just give cash. Or, if you want to do a card, do a pre-paid VISA or something.

I cannot figure out why anyone would ever want to give anyone a gift card rather than cash? (or check) when I don't know what to get someone, I would rather give them the choice and the money to buy what they would like. Not force them to only be able to go to one store, and besides, what are (if any) the benifits of gift cards? BESIDES TO GROCERY STORES that have got everyone thinking they are the greatest gift to give?

Most places that do/sell gift cards give a certain time frame (usually 3-6 months) before it starts automatically deducting x amount of money per month off. The incentive of course is to get a rapid return on the gift card; it does not count as a sale, and is not taxable, until it is REDEEMED. For example, my Schmizza is located in Idaho. 6% sales tax. I sold a ton of $5 gift cards over the holidays, I had to ring them in tax-free (and this is a state where even groceries are taxed). I don't get credit for selling them in sales, and I don't pay royalties on selling them. When they are reimbursed, THAT is what I pay sales tax on, and royalties. Same for these big-box stores, it's like they're handing out their own money to be spent at their place, and it doesn't count for sales or anything until they give it back when they are buying something with it. It is in their best interests to get that money back quickly, so they tack on the fees if you don't use it in an expedient manner. Read the small print on the back of the gift card you get from ANY place; it'll specify that right on it, legally it has to.

If someone gives money for a gift, the recipient can easily spend it on everyday items. With a giftcard, if they use the card, they actually receive a gift!

The stores were so out of date. The floor plans horrible and customer service was just as bad. When looking at CC it reminded me of something from the 70's.

If you want to go, most items including big ticket items are 10% off. 20% off for CD/DVDs and 30% for mobile products (cell phones and accessories). So, unless you need a cell phone, not many bargains here, just long lines.

Wait for the bargains. The closer to D Day they get, the deeper the discounts. And whatever you do, do NOT buy the extended warranty!

Isn't there a law set in place with giftcards?Because I thought they no longer could expire or they could no longer deduct money from the cards? Can't remember which one it was. I know of people who have gotten ripped off with cards and have had money deducted from their card because they waited to long.
