God I love music.

There are a few artists that for whatever reason, didn't pull off a 2nd album. Here are a few of my favorites;

David and David - Welcome To The Boomtown. David Baerwald was one of the " David." He went on to do lots of great solo work. But the first time I heard the title track from Boomtown, I was blown away. Baerwald is a prolific writer for other artists ( Sheryl Crow most notibly ). But there was some magic on Boomtown that is great, to me.

The Stone Roses - Stone Roses. Embodiment of The Manchester sound. They did put out a 2nd album. But it's like it didn't count.

Jellyfish - Bellybutton and Spilt Milk. Power pop perfection. John Lennonesque vocals. Crunchy guitars. Hooks that melt you.

Redd Kross - Phaseshifter. See above.

The Knack.

Taco. We never heard much from him beyond "After Eight" (the record that had "Putting On The Ritz") but reportedly he *did* become rather popular in Europe. He supposedly put out a second record here but it's like even it didn't count...... ;o)

(Well, I thought he was good......)

Amy Winehouse--she put out two albums and then set about destroying herself and her career with drugs, alcohol, rowdy behavior, and self-harm.

Ritchie Valens--his recording career lasted only eight months before he was killed in a plane crash. He released only one studio album, and that came out shortly after he died.

I'm thinking Buddy Holly would have put out more quality stuff it wasn't for the Iowa incident. Although I don't anyone would miss The Big Bopper.

I also I'd haved like a lot more from John Lennon as well - The Plastic Ono Band is among my favorites . . .

As for people still alive, I wish the Sneaker Pimps would give it another go and try again for another "Becoming X". Something decent again from Hole would be appreciated, as would something from Garbage closer to their debut CD. I'd also like U2 to do shock us with something entirely different.

People don't seem talk very much about Dion DiMucci, either, these days. DiMucci and his band The Belmonts were the fourth act on the tour. DiMucci's life was spared because he was too cheap to pay $36 for a seat on the chartered plane.

Chickenjuggler, that is a great list! Amazingly, I have all those also.

I've got a great album by a band called Blinker The Star. Pretty much the work of one guy, but it is great pop, well produced. I'm not sure why they didn't get any further.

I wish that Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Sam Cooke, Nick Drake, Chris Bell, the dBs, Let's Active, The Bluebells and Crackerbash put out more records -- to name a few.

Chickenjuggler --

Red Cross (1980)
Born Innocent (1982)
Teen Babes From Monsanto (1984)
Neurotica (1987)
Third Eye (1990)
2500 Redd Kross Fans Can't Be Wrong (1993)
Phaseshifter (1993)
Show World (1997)

Neurotica was my favorite.

The Stone Roses would have to hire John Leckie to make it work again.

Alfredo --

I believe Amy Winehouse is overrated. She owes much of her success and sound to Gabriel Roth's engineering and the Dap-Kings' performances. Sharon Jones is a far better singer and performer.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/07/magazine/07daptone-t.html

Warner --

Blinker the Star (1993)
A Bourgeois Kitten (1996)
August Everywhere (1999)
Still in Rome (2003)

Great thread!

Littlesongs, I knew they put out a couple of others, I have August Everywhere.

Have you guys seen/heard Duffy? She is way better than Amy Winehouse will ever be, and she's not a wasted druggie. And cute as buttons!

And yes, Sharon Jones is the real deal.

> Have you guys seen/heard Duffy?

Yup--I bought her _Rockferry_ album a few weeks ago. I also saw Adele live when she played in Portland at the end of May. There has been a mini "craze" of young female British singers performing 1960s American Soul music. I find it slightly amusing that the styles that Duffy, Amy Winehouse, and Adele are trying to recreate were popular some 20 years before these artists were born!!

I think that Duffy is likely to outlive Adele and Amy Winehouse by a longshot due to her relatively healthy lifestyle. Adele is overweight, and she smokes cigarettes. Winehouse's body is like deadly chemical coctail, and she seems to have a general aversion to food. Of course, nobody knows how long this Soul revival craze will last. Will Duffy and Adele have a chance to each put out at least one more album before the music buying public moves on to something else? I have no clue.

I have been meaning to buy at least one of the Dap Kings' albums. According to one story that I read, it was a happy accident that the Dap Kings collaborated on many of the tracks in _Back_to_Black_. Winehouse wrote her own lyrics, but she and her producer couldn't figure out how to create the 1960s Soul sound that she was looking for. Fortunately, the Dap Kings had been working on a project in the same studio a few days before, and somebody (an engineer?) got the idea to ask them if they would be interested in collaborating. It was the Dap Kings' experience in arranging and recording this style of music that made the _Back_to_Black_ sound possible.

Generally, finding artists who fit the criteria of this thread has been pretty difficult. I would have thought that Jim Croce might be a candidate, but he had released several albums, going back to the mid 1960s (!) before he got popular.

Here's a true "one album" band:

Cross Country. You old folks may remember they had a hit with a remake of "In The Midnight Hour" back in (ahem) 1973. Kind of a CSN folk-rock vocal harmonies thing, which was popular back then.

What many don't know is, this band was comprised of some members of an old doo-wop group, The Tokens. This album was their attempt to go artistic. Unfortunately, one and done.

I've got it on vinyl, of course, and I love it.

CJ and Warner, I am a music nerd and I'm loving this thread!

The San Francisco Seals, Appletree Theatre, Enchanted Forest, Green Pajamas and Sagittarius could have blessed us with more vinyl. The Jean-Paul Sartre Experience put 4 records out -- so I guess they don't count.

Alfredo, that was an interesting story, but not entirely accurate. It was actually a pretty unromantic business deal prepared by cynics in high places. Frankly put, it was a blatant cash-in attempt on a growing buzz that did not belong to Winehouse at all.

Major labels are always interested in exploiting local sounds and talents. In some cases, it has been really cool. "Nashville Skyline" and "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" are good examples. At other times, like "Young Americans" -- which featured not one single member from MFSB, no input from Gamble & Huff, nor any of Joe Tarsia's engineering -- it was really tepid and damn silly. Three decades later, the Bowie record is still held in low regard by fans of genuine Philly Soul.

The Winehouse sessions were eerily similar to the past when big time producers took outside artists to Muscle Shoals, Chess, Stax, RCA Nashville, United Western, Sigma Sound, et al. Many records used the house band, house arrangers and house engineers to create a facsimile of the house sound behind an act. This was especially true when big money had already been invested in inexperienced kids, manufactured stars, longtime addicts, erratic personalities, or sadly, the terminally ill. It had to be solid on all fronts, even if the performer was hopeless.

This situation was really no different than it was decades ago when other British talents used American genius and traditions to sell their wares. In a way, it brings the throwback motif full circle. The Dap-Kings are the "house band" for Daptone Records just like the Funk Brothers were at Motown years ago. Gabriel Roth is a studio owner, composer, arranger, engineer and producer as well as bass player for the Dap-Kings. I really admire Gabe, the musical team and the vision behind the label. I hope it will outlive and outgrow Amy by leaps and bounds.

Here are some glimpses behind the scenes at Daptone:

By the way, I definitely agree that Richie Valens had immense potential and untapped talent.

Fat Mattress, the band that Noel Redding started after he "left" Jimi Hendrix, put out two albums. They were a sort of early prog-rock/English folk-rock band. I thought it was pretty good, and it actually wears pretty well.

Damn! It is too bad that record company people concoct blatant lies in hopes of making their products seem more intriguing to potential buyers.

The Daptone Records videos were pretty interesting, though. Now, I HAVE to go out and buy the Dap Kings' records!! I was a bit surprised and impressed to see that the guys doing the recording and engineering on these recordings are fairly young-looking. People in their age group who have experience in analog recording and production techniques are pretty scarce, I would imagine.

I don't know whether this artist would qualify as "great," as I never had a chance to hear her music, but I am pretty certain that she only released one album in her short-lived musical career. The artist was Jennifer Ringley.

Ringley was an amateur musician better known as the Jennicam girl. At the peak of her popularity, circa 2000, she decided that she could make a few extra bucks by putting out a CD. If memory serves me correctly, this was once available through Amazon.com.

HSAS - Through The Fire

Hagar - Schon - Aaronson - Shrieve

Hagar doing the vocals and Schon on lead guitar was a great combination. This album has a killer version of "Whiter Shade of Pale".

Can't wait for "Chickenfoot" first release!

Guitarist Joe Satriani, Red Hot Chili Peppers's drummer Chad Smith, former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and Hagar doing the vocals should be awesome!

If we are going to grab something from the late 60s, how about some real one-off projects? I nominate the self-titled 1968 release from The Smoke. I will grant you that Michael Lloyd has made a much bigger name for himself behind the scenes since his days with The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, but his lone pseudonymous solo effort is a real gem.

Along those obscure lines, "Come & See Us As We Are!" from 1970 is a great release by the short-lived New York quintet, Disciple. Though far from unknown, "Transmissions From the Satellite Heart" and "Clouds Taste Metallic" were the only Flaming Lips records that featured the genius of guitarist, Ronald Jones. While I am wishing and hoping, I would definitely like another helping of Mister Jones.

I heartily second the suggestion of Thunderclap Newman. Speedy Keen began his career as a roadie, but made an impact by penning both "Something in the Air" and "Armenia City in the Sky" -- the first cut on another fantastic album, The Who Sell Out. He later worked behind the glass on seminal records from Johnny Thunders and Motorhead.

To wrap up the discussion of Amy Winehouse, I wanted to give you a final tidbit to chew. What you heard was essentially a collection of samples of the Dap-Kings backing her vocals. Ouch. Speaking of real Daptone talent, did any of you see Sharon Jones when she was in town? The next night they were in Los Angeles and appeared on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

Derek & The Dominoes, "Layla and other assorted Love Songs"

Surprised no one mentioned this one. They put out one album although many years later, a second album of tracks from the sessions was released.

Readers of Rolling Stone voted the following the best of the onesies:

1. Jeff Buckley - Grace
2. Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols
3. The Modern Lovers - The Modern Lovers
4. Mother Love Bone – Apple
5. The La’s - The La’s
6. Derek & The Dominoes - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs
7. Young Marble Giants - Colassal Youth
8. Black Star - Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are Black Star
9. Propellerheads - Decksandrumsandrockandroll
10. David and David - Boomtown
