I was just a 17 year old kid working part-time at KGW, but from my perspective Dean was a great guy. He seemed to have the loyality of the staff and the station was doing very well. I remember a christmas party at his house (either dec '71 or '72). I was surprised, but happy, that he personally invited me...something I didn't expect since I worked evenings and weekends and rarely saw him. I'm sure other KGW folk will have much more to say.

He was a real gentleman. He was the first (of many) General Manager I worked for during my time with King Broadcasting. Always calm...not easy with the likes of Don Wright, Phil Harper and, perhaps, myself. He was one of those uncommon leaders who always took the time to let his people know he thought they were doing a good job.

My first as well. Class act all the way. We could use more like Dean Woodring. Just 19 and interning at KGW. He always had time and attention for "the kid". Once busted Uncle Don and myself for stupidly takin' a "smoke break" in full view of Jefferson one morning. While I thought my career was over before it even began, Mr. Woodring was very cool but firm about it. I learned that one must close the blinds. Class act.

Uncle Don's "smoke breaks!! Did you ever see him standing on his head in the hallway outside the studio? It was a different time....

I remember when he had me call to confirm his reservation at the Eslan Institute in Big Sur (sort of a meditation type resort) and I found his "smoking materials" in his briefcase when I opened it to get the number out of his address book. You're right Craig, it was a different time for sure!!!

Like sands through the hourglass so are the days of our desire. That was so fun to listen to.

Wayne's World,
Thanks. It was a lot of fun to do. First time I ever ventured off the format. I don't think I ever found my way back.

It was. The top 40 sounded bad after you left the big 620. The advent of FM was a factor too.

Dean Woodring was a class act. He had a tough act to follow at KGW, as Jim Kime was an excellent Manager and loved by the staff. Dean understood how and why the station worked, and he found ways to make it better. I only worked with him for a short time, but he and Alan were close.
