KOIN-TV's "Northwest Illustrated" presented at 5:30PM today the CBS News documentary "A Day Called X" which was first broadcast on CBS Television on September 27, 1955. The 30 minute presentation used Portland Oregon and it's people to dramatize an H-Bomb alert. Movie Star, Glenn Ford appeared at the beginning and narrated the documentary.

Fascinating to watch pictures of 1955 Portland and it's people in charge. The presentation starred then Portland Mayor, Terry Schrunk, KOIN Radio's Johnny Carpenter & KOIN Radio-TV Announcer (?) names escapes me but anyone here in the 50's, 60's & 70's would know that voice . He did the ID's. There was also a look at the KOIN Radio studio with KOIN on the mic.

Conelrad civil defence was talked about but I would swear one of the city officials pronounced it as "Conehead". (20 years before SNL!!)

Did a web search and found the TV documentary listed as a movie. One site says it's from 1953. The site below says it was broadcast December 8, 1957.

Would have been fun to see - if only I'd known it was going to be on!

The CBS documentary is public domain. If you missed it on KOIN you can download it for free. It'll take time and disc space, but you can watch it free:

Since it's free, KOIN sure found some cost effective programming!

I have 3 names in my head and only 1 has broken through: Red Dunning

Semoochie: No, if your talking about the KOIN Announcer I couldn't name above. I remember Red Dunning on TV and it wasn't him.

Oh & Thanks Brooks!

Thanks Brooks! I just watched the internet stream (much faster than downloading it) and it is quite an interesting little film.

And I was mad at YOU, Craig, for not looking at your TV Guide a few hours earlier and telling us about the broadcast! But now, thanks to technology, I am happy and I forgive you. :-)

Speaking of TV Guide you guys. Have you notice with the consolidation of TV Guide editions into just State editions about 9 months ago, TV Guide has recently dropped the "Key" to the TV Stations, in the beginning of the local listings. I guess it was to just to long! Took a lot of ink to print that!

Also, I seem to remember a unique voice in Eddie Butherus... "Kay Oh Eye ENNN teevee, PORT lund!"

He had a "Bill Howlett" quality to his voice.

Scott: I think you've got it. Bud Beachwood rings a bell with me. He did a KOIN-TV weekend show where he interviewed people, remember?
