Here's a few I can think of...

95.5 KXL-FM - AAA "95.5fm" from December '97 to March '99

95.5 KXL-FM - Hot AC "Star 95.5" from September '93 to October '94.

106.7 KKBK - Classical "K-Bach" from June '93 to February '94.

101.1 KKCY - NAC "the City" in 1989

Others?

97KYTE was once AC long enough for one book to come out. Sunny ran its current format up against an existing competitor and got nowhere, only to bring it back a few years later when there was a hole. The same station ran a satellite AC format called "StarStation" between "Brave New Radio" and Classical. I think KQFM/KKRZ's "building your radio station" phase lasted longer than any of these. Not a format but how long did KGW call itself "W62"?

"Brave New Radio" and Classical were both on 910 KKSN. "Brave New Radio" was the format when they came back on the air in the spring of 1980.

Thanks Paul! I couldn't figure out how to word it since the station recently changed call letters. Brave New Radio was a free-form album format.

Someone needs to research every format since it was 62 KGW... There have been so many tweaks and changes, I'm sure one is bound to find a short-lived format.

KYXI ran B/EZ for many years, changed to AC for about 2, another decent run with All News and then to a short-lived Stardust nostalgia format that retained a morning newsblock before becoming Oldies KSGO.

I remember a KGON competitor back in 1981 or so, I think they were KQFM. Can't even remember where on the dial it was, I just remember hearing it, thinking "Cool!" It seemed like 2 weeks later they'd just disappeared. :-(

KKCY 101.1 "The City" ran from March to December '89, about 9 months.

I believe all the formats mentioned by "Trixter" lasted longer than a year. KB-101 lasted from about August '79 to around August or September of '82 when it became KRCK. However, KB-101 made a format tweak about a year into it. It started as a rock-leaning top 40, then added oldies and backed away from metal. Towards the end I recall them playing a lot of new wave/MTV leaning groups like U2 and A Flock of Seagulls. It was an unusual mix of new and old programmed by Robin Mitchell, with real "air personalities" -- among my all-time favorite stations.

KQFM went through a couple of rock incarnations. In '78 it dropped it's long-time easy listening format for a weird mix of oldies, disco, and album rock, nothing too hard-edged. Then they tightened up with an adult album rock format that was musically between KGON and KINK. That 2nd phase was short-lived. Then it became "Solid Gold FM 100," then "The Rose" (KKRZ), then "Z-100."

When was KMJK's "soft rock" format? I think it was in 77-78 & it played quite a bit of Gordon Lightfoot & the Doors & the like. I liked that format the best of all. Why did it stop?

KZEL was playing a lot of harder-edged 60s rock, Animals, Stones, Hendrix, etc., while KB-101's mix included a wider variety of 50s & 60s "oldies."

Your right! The stations I stated above were around for more than a year. BUT, back then... (dating myself) We didn't change formats like the industry does now.
Wasn't Earth 105 only around for like 3 1/2 books???? I might be wrong...

KXYQ switched to Earth 105 in early 1995, IIRC. Call letters changed to KKRH a few months later. They switched to Rosie/Rosey 105 on June 5th, 1998 (if not that day, then the day before).

I think KUPL 970 was Crusin' Oldies From Feb. 2001-Aug. 2001.

Also, I think two of the shortest formats in Portland Radio History also had to do with 970 (if there were shorter ones, these should be honorable mentions):

1. When KBBT started simulcasting on then-KDBX 107.5, they started somewhere in the middle of July '96, and switched to Modern AC as "107dot5 and 970 The Beat" the next month (something out of the back of my head says August 23, 1996), I don't think the original Modern Rock format lasted much longer than 5-6 weeks on FM.

2. After the switch to Modern AC, 970 and 107.5 were the same format, but different programming. I think 970 moved over to the original Classic Country format about a month later.

That's right...970 flipped to Modern AC at the same time as 107.5. Several weeks later, 970 changed to Country, briefly simulcasting KUPL-FM. Then came the Classic Country format.

KLIQ's All News format was the first of its kind, predating Gordon McClendons experiments. I wouldn't count KKRZ on this list because only the call letters changed. It was a continuation of KQFM's AC format and the station was about to change hands.

Yeah, I remember that waste of air-time! One of Clear-Channel's shortest lived broadcast disasters Portland has seen in recent years!!

What was the point of it? What's the purpose of having a radio station if you are only going to play a few seconds of a song??? (Ohhh, yeahhh...the old "3000 Songs an Hour" thing comes back to mind, although, by my count and the computer-generated-counter-guy's count, it was somewhere in the mid-400s!)

Congrats on the new digs, CC! And may you never have a day's luck with them!

We used to have AAHS here??? Wow.......I guess I really AM old! (I'm 20, god forbid...)

Also, I remember seeing in several issues of Disney Adventures during their 1995-96 printing run that there were ads proudly hailing "Radio AAHS!!! The Radio station just for kids! Tune in for cool music, great stories, and lots of fun games and contests!"

And, to my knowledge, Radio Disney bought them out a number of years ago and AAHS has not been continued. Correct, yes, no? However, I have noticed that Radio Disney takes after AAHS in the way the station is programmed.

Craig (or anyone else, for that matter): could anyone provide some more insight into the demise of AAHS?

Cheers, MuzBoy

Ohhh....dang.......

Thanks for the thought, Craig, but Google doesn't ever seem to want to work on my system!!

When ever I use it, it just returns the error message saying "An error has occured. Internet explorer will now close. If you keep receiving this error message, please restart our computer."

It also does this whenever I call up my Highveldmail account, and when I call up about 62.48%-68.71% of other web pages out there!!!

Anybody know what is going on here? I am running IE 5.5 thru Windows 98 on an IBM Aptiva (yeccchhh...) with an Amdahl K6P2 (3DNow! Enabled) 400 Mc CPU (double yeccchhh...), if that helps.

"Radio Aahs" update from "Inside Radio"

"The final remnants of Radio Aahs are being liquidated. Radio Aahs' successor company Intelefilm has announced a liquidation plan to pay the debts that forced it into bankruptcy. Radio Aahs waged an 8-year legal battle with ABC - which launched Radio Disney after pulling out of a marketing partnership with Radio Aahs. In April a judge ordered ABC to pay $12.4M in damages." (8-20-04)

And this from "All Access"

"What's left of the company that once ran RADIO AAHS has announced an initial liquidation payment to shareholders of 32 cents/common share to be paid on AUGUST 31. INTELEFILM's liquidation plan was confirmed by the U.S. BANKRUPTCY COURT on April 22. The company won a $12.4 million judgment from ABC RADIO NETWORKS and the WALT DISNEY CO. days after filing for bankruptcy; the suit had alleged that the latter companies wrongfully terminated a distribution deal and then launched their own RADIO DISNEY." (8-20-04)
