In the mid 1960's "The Bob Hazen Show" was broadcast on KOIN & KXL at different times in the morning. I believe the KOIN 15 minute show ran first. The KXL show, later in the morning, might have been longer, maybe 30 minutes.

I had no idea that he was one of the people behind the old Benjamin Franklin Savings & Loan. I thought he was just the spokesman, which is how I always remembered him.

He had a 15 minute show in AMDR on KPOJ when I was there in '71-72.

Thanks Terry! Didn't know about KPOJ. Remembered running into newspaper ads with his picture on the Radio/TV page. The ad might have been purchased by The Benjamin Franklin which featured both KOIN & KXL broadcast times.

"Pay yourself first". Bob Hazen was a Portland institution.

This dates me, but in grade school we listened to his morning show with our Rice Krispies at the kitchen counter before leaving for school. We'd switch between Hazen's show and Barney Keep's school lunch menu over on KEX.

I'm pretty sure it was 1970 that KPOJ became KPOK, following in its FM's footsteps. I have a promotional button in a drawer. I'll have to dig it out. They said it was for people who grew up in the 40s, 50s or 60s.

No need to dig it up. The switch was made on June 9, 1970. I was waiting for Terry to correct the years or calls.

I thought the Bob Hazen show was on KOIN am in the late fifties! My dad always had his show on at 7:45 am on the way to school. I remember that he used the song "the hot canary" as his theme. I hated that song and still do! I believe dad had it on for that reason.

I knew there was a call letter change during the aprox 2 years I worked there.... but it was the change to KUPL / Beautiful music.

Too long ago. The only lasting memory is the hundreds of absolutely gross cottage cheese cartons that CCA Awards clubs dropped off at the station each month to get their "points."

I think Bob Hazen ran as part of "Keep Time" in the 50's, too. Seems like Ole Barn would take a break at about 8:45, then come back with the rest of the show.

Bob Hazen was on KEX during the Barney Keep show. I don't know about 8:45AM but I seem to remember it was around 7:15AM. It was a 15 minute show. I don't know why it would be at 8:45 if the old Barn would be done at 9.

But that was a long time ago.

I remember the old radio, TV and newspaper organization called P.O.R.N.O., orgainized by Oregon Journal photog Max Guierterez. The group met one summer night in 1972 at Hazen's office in the downtown branch of the Ben Franklin S&L. Hazen seemingly knew everyone. He had personally autgraphed photos on the wall of his office from the great and near-great. I distinctly remember the photo of Hazen with Glenn Miller, the famous band leader. His father, Ben Hazen, founded the S&L way back. Bob was a very personable guy who knew how to promote.

There is a radio listing from 1959 and 1960 which Craig found which has the ratings and schedules of the different radio stations. It has Bob on KOIN on at 7:45 am. Those are probably hard to come by but I would love to see more like that!

Thanks everyone for your very kind words about Dad. I remember going to the KEX studios as a kid and being thrilled by the fascinating technology. Everyone at the station was very nice.

I got kidded a lot in school for Dad's high voice, especially after he went on TV.

If anyone is interested I'd be happy to pull out some old photos of Dad and stick them on my web site for public viewing -- I even think I have a recording of the "The Hot Canary" theme song.

All the best,

Deck Hazen

Excuse the diversion.....
Trivia Observations about the first photo (baker01):
Large plastic bag draped over records at left. Keeps the dust off?
Old headphones sitting on turntable. Those must have been painful to wear.
Is that a half smoked cigar sitting on the edge of the table left of the ashtray?
Is that a cigar box (the quaker dudes) on the shelf behind the guy on the left?
Extra cord coming out of rear of telephone on right.
Indicator Lamp connected to telephone on left.
Giant size tone arm on turntable. Tracking force?
Funny looking tape recorder at far right. Cant see the reels, only the tape going up and around capstan, guides, and rollers.
Tuner on shelf.
Old microphone at far left.
Is photo from about 1960ish?

The first jpeg (above) has KEX taping Bob from a hospital room, which pretty much verifies my memory of the show being a part of "Keep Time." It might have played in the 7am hour.

The shot of Bob Hazen with Gerald Ford appears to be taken at KWJJ. I recognize the mansion. Still looked like that in the 90's. Appears to be the "library," which was the GM's office by 93.

62kgw: This is why I asked for studio photos. Sometimes they're pretty sparse. A mike, table and an announcer but that photo is Top Notch! You really get a feel of the time period and equipment. The Doug Baker Show debuted on KLIQ January 5, 1966 from the Hoyt Hotel. I believe that is where the picture was taken. I wouldn't be surprised if Baker was a guest on The Bob Hazen Show at some point also.

Thanks Again Deck! Are any of the backs to these photos dated?

Robin: Thanks! Didn't realize the Gerald Ford picture was at KWJJ.

Great shot with Doug Baker. (Note the nylon cable ties on the desk; were they around yet in '66?)

President Ford was in town on 11/1/74, 9/4/75, 5/22/76.

I'm wondering if that odd assoretment of rollers and such in the Doug Baker pic could be one of the late Joe Allen's home brew tape delay machines. A couple of Joe's great loves were fancy lighted switches and home made equipment.

When I was at KLIQ we had two Maggie 1021 recorders moded to move the erase and record heads slightly to the left. This left a gap between the record and playback heads where Joe installed a couple of tape guides. The tape (from odd ten inch reels) went across the erase and record heads and then through the first tape guide. It then went up and over a roller installed on a blank rack panel above the 1021. Then the tape went back down through the second tape guide and across the playback head. This created about a two foot loop and gave us a tape delay of about 5 1/2 seconds. It was an ingenious
solution and pure Joe Allen.

Can anybody make out the printing on the box(?) up in the upper right corner?
Looks like a little cartoon duckling and "Home of the xxxxxxxxxx"

I see the cable ties next to the telephone. Perhaps there are some CD's on the shelf behind the poster.

There is a 2nd set of military headphones on the table. Would radio stations actually buy old headphones at a surplus store rather than new from hi-fi dealer?

Now I got to ask are some of the records 10" 78's on the shelf? Look closely there is stack of 12" lp albums lying flat on one shelf (like they would not fit vertically), the records in the rack on the left side of same shelf look too big to be 45's, but obviously are less than lp size.

They might be old 10" LP's which were prevalent in the early 1950's. This would have been just 15 years earlier.

Not cable ties. But waxed cable lacing...a real art form of some engineers. Flat waxed cording looped around the wires, knotted, then pulled parallel to the wires for about 2-3 inches when it took another loop and knot and so-on down the bundle of wires. Many enginers took great pride in their lacing "handiwork."

The behivee shapped lamp attached to the Telephone was a neon ring indicator or flasher. Most control rooms/studios had no bells on the phones but a ring indicator lamp, for obvious reasons.

The "Good" RCA 77DCX Ribbon mike sits unused in the far corner while a less expensive and much lighter weight stand/hand held (apparently Electro Voice)is shared for the interview. Reason could be is that the better sounding and much more expensive RCA ribbon mike was set for omni pattern and flat (music) response and ONLY for use when picking up mucic groups in the studio.

A lot of station had in-house cutting lathes (record cutting turntables) and would use 10, 12 or even 14 inch disks for pre-recorded material such as programs, features or commercials. Often they wdere kept in heavy Kraft paper Jackets, or just stacked about.

Bob: Looks like they didn't follow directions on the tub: "A little dab will do ya."

Semoochie: EP's were 7" like 45's with 2 cuts on a side. The 10" 33 1/3rpm LP's had 3 or 4 cuts on a side.

Hello again,

I’ve found a few more photos that I hope will be of interest. There is a second photo of Doug Baker and Dad – slightly tighter shot – I’ve left the resolution high in case you wanted to view more detail, but it makes the file size larger – about 630K.

I’ve also re-scanned the photo with Gerald Ford, this one is un-cropped and shows more detail of the room if that’s of any help.

And I’ve found a 5 page magazine article on Dad that provides a nice summary of his accomplishments up to that point along with some pictures. These are about 500 K each.

Sorry Craig, I couldn’t see any dates on any of the photos, however the notation on the bottom right of the Baker photos indicates “Bruce Luzader Studios – 5211 N.E. Sandy Blvd. Portland 13 Oregon (2 digit zip code?) – there is a phone number that looks like 282-0811, but it’s very small and my eyes aren’t so sharp. I remember that our home phone number changed from “NE6” to “636” – not sure if that would help nail down the date. Also Dad is holding a “Save our Stadium” flyer in his hand.

The URLs are:

No zipcodes before 1964, the last 2 digits are the old "zone". Elvis sings about them in "Return to Sender". The 7 inch EP sounds familiar but was there a special name for the 10 incher?

I've got a 10" LP here.
"long playing 33 1/3 RPM"
Its a TOPS MASTERPIECE.
Parade of Favorites.
3 per side.
Jay Wilbur conducts the Melbourne Concert Orchestra. (instrumentals)

The address on the back has 2 digit postal zone for TOPS in L.A. and N.Y.

It has a Fred Meyer price sticker for 79 cents.

There is a lot of hype printed on the back cover. For example: "TRIPLE-FIDELITY RECORDING, A SCIENTIFIC TRIUMPH!"

Hi Again,

I'm in Portland at the moment going through Dads things in a storage locker he kept in Lake Oswego and I've come across about a half-dozen reel-to-reel audio tapes that I suspect are from his radio days. I'd be very happy to hand these tapes over to anyone who might be interested in them.

My only condition is that you find some way of sharing the material with other members of this board who might be interested in hearing them.

You can drop me a note at deck.hazen@gmail.com or call me on 503-333-9223.

Easiest if you can pick the tapes up from me in Lake Oswego, but I'll consider dropping them off in the Portland area if I can.

All the best,

The Bob Hazen Show debuted on KXL April 1, 1959 at 7:45am. His KOIN show continued at this same time. In the ad announcement: "Named by PULSE Survey as Portland's most popular daytime radio show." "Presenting your favorite music, both old and new. RADIO KXL, NIFTY 750." The Bob Hazen Show ran 15 minutes.
