On December 26, 1926 Oregon Broadcast Co. (John C. Egan) was granted a broadcast license for 1300kc, with the power of 50 watts. On December 29, 1926 requested calls KROW were assigned. KROW reported signing on the air, on this date, from a studio located at The Sovereign Hotel (1207 S.W. Broadway) in Portland. Transmitter located atop The Broadway Theatre (1008 S.W. Broadway).

In January 1927 KROW reported to The Radio Division, Bureau of Navigation, that it had not bought the KFWV transmitter from Wilbur J. Jerman as first reported. Mr. Egan had decided to build a composite 250 watt transmitter instead. This suggested to The Radio Division, that KROW was not broadcasting and that it had falsely reported it's sign on date.

In March 1927 KROW's license expired. In April 1927 a Federal Radio Inspector visited The Broadway Theatre to find that KROW had "never broadcast any programs" and that Mr. Egan & associates "fradulently obtained (a) license (as) owners of a station which they did not own" (reference to the KFWV transmitter). KROW's license was then deleted.

PMJ:

Did you ever see me standing at the end of Oak Villa Road, directly across the highway from KROW, waiting for the bus @ 7:15 a.m.? I spent most of the 70's there every morning, eating my pop-tart with wet hair, looking at that stupid rooster sign and big tower in the field. Who knew I was just 2 lanes away from a legend, Monday through Friday???

My second radio station that I worked at. We had an old Gates Transmitter that had six mercury vapor tubes, and an old compressor between studio and transmitter that was an "asymetrical waveform switcher". Problem was, this compressor would make large positive spikes that would pop the transmitter off the air. So after I got hired, I decided that I should start listening to the station I was just hired at. I was driving from Newberg to Dallas to do the mid-day show, and was listening to H. David Allen doing the morning show. During the middle of his break, HDA was doing a live spot, and then stopped in the middle of the break. He said "gawd damn Sta-Level"... and walked out of the studio, opening the large patio doors that separated the studio from the transmitter. Then you heard a whispered "sh*t", followed by a few seconds of silence, then a spot. Turned out the station did NOT get knocked off the air, and he was tip toeing back into the studio to start the spot. I had just moved up to medium market radio, and didn't realize what a ride i was in for...
