Hearing nothing but KHITS promos on KQOL. Must be close to a format change for 105.9. Any guesses as to what the next format will be on 105.9? Maybe news/talk simulcast of KEX? Or would they go to a Mexican music format?

It started right after the noon ID. Since it's my primary purpose in life to guess when radio stations change format, I'll stay with 3PM on Friday or maybe noon, unless it's a simulcast, at which point, I'll say Sunday night at midnight.

I'm not by a radio, but just checked the websites. KHITS site says "Welcome 105.9 listeners." KOOL's website forwards you to KHITS -- but just before it does, it flashes the title "105.9 --everything country."

No Wayne, they didn't have better ratings with Smooth Jazz. They also didn't bill much of anything with that format. Kool was a much better biller, but now that CC owns K-Hits, they needed to move one of the duplicate formats. Looks like they've decided on Kool.

"Everything Country?" That's interesting. Makes about as much sense as 80's Classic Rock..like some are saying. I think we're the brunt of a CC IT person's joke.

The "Everything Country" tag is a ruse, I have it on very good authority (my garbageman's mailperson's third cousin) that they'll be switching to a high-energy big band/swing/30s and 40s format. "Music of your Life" on viagra!

If you go to 105.9 website it redirects you to 106.7. Look in your browser's history. It will show 105.9 Everything Country. Which probably means they will simulcast Rush Limbaugh there. :-)

They aren't really simulcasting, they are just advertising snipits of what you can hear on KHits. So KOOL might be changing, or being parked?

Have the rules against parking a radio station been thrown out?

And they could be "parking" the domain name "The Brew" for another of their stations at 105.9. According to the CC website, they have nine stations at 105.9. That's really not that many though when you think about it. I guess anything is possible.

"Everything Country" is used by CC's Phoenix country station, KNIX. Maybe we have room for a "third" country station here in PDX? Or maybe a country oldies station would be a good fit.

Not sure country oldies would be a good demographic fit in PDX.

I'm still somewhat fascinated by this whole "Brew" idea. Is it real or a diversion?

Why would CC buy the domain, unless they were going to use it somewhere in the system? I guess we will find out sooner than later.

Country oldies would be good if you ran out of things to do on AM in this market. I bet my bottom dallor on an all country and country crossover hmmmmm like "we play everything country" and we should name it ooooh what is Charlie's aunt's name? My guess is a "We Play Everything That Rocks" format. 70's 80's 90's and todays hits. Kind of like a combination of KGON and KNRK. They would be crazy to go format to format with KGON or KNRK, but a hybrid format might just be interesting enough to attract a good audience. Without solid air talent it won't stand a chance though. A little Rock & Roll Brew and if there is live talent they will probably be known as "The Brew Crew".

...and K103. I haven't heard one from Z100 yet. There are also some by Scott Tom promoting his show. I would think that would be the most effective for regular Kool listeners. As far as a new format, I've pretty well ruled out 60s! By the way, Scott Tom has a liner about kissin' Kool goodbye! If you click on the 1059thebrew.com link, it just takes you to the K-Hits website. That doesn't make any sense if it's the real format.

If 105.9 does become "The Brew"...it should be more contemporary than the other "Brew" stations, to avoid overlap with K-Hits 106.7.

I'm a little bit disappointed by how long the stunting has been running. At first, I expected the flip to occur at midnight. If the new format were a KEX simulcast, I would have expected that to start with Paul Linnman's show this morning. My next guess is that the new programming won't be a KEX simulcast and that it will start at noon.

I've been thinking about this. There aren't a lot of options, where 105.9 could own the format. Spanish would have seemed reasonable until we learned that it doesn't do all that well with the PPM. An all 90s or 80s/90s format might work but I don't see anyone else trying it and Portland is rarely first with a new idea. They could go up against another strong player like the theoretical "Brew" format. KUPL and the Wolf pretty much take care of themselves. Another player probably wouldn't have much effect. Simulcasting KEX looks like their best option.

I agree - it's either The Brew (which we know by now is a typical CC plug & play clone but the name might bring it some post-launch buzz here in Beervana), or KEX which would have very little additional overhead. I don't see them trying to split any slices of pie with the country or Hispanic outlets.

If it turns out to be 1190's programming on FM, would the FCC grant KEX-FM or would CC have to resort to a variant like KEXB?

...not necessarily! 105.9 would get them into office buildings and just about everywhere around Portland that 1190 has trouble. As long as they keep it a simulcast, it could send KEX over the top. I thought they'd keep 105.9 too but there's a frequency to program and I don't see anything better from a business standpoint.

what doesnt make sense about a country format is the lack of budget CC has for airstaff. Can Clear Channel really think it can beat two heritage country stations with voice track talent from out of market? I have a hard time beleiving after last week's bloodbath that any airstaff would be hired for the venture....but who knows i guess....i'll beleive its country when i hear it

then again, it is entirely possible that the country staion WOULD be "the brew".....lord knows there are a lot of country songs that talk about beer...

the "kool" website at 1059thebrew.com/main.html has a "top videos" feature on the right hand side, featuring artists like Queen, Led Zep, Billy Idol, Eagles, Kansas, Stones. That doesnt sound like the former KOOL's playlist, especially since some of the songs are newer such as Queen (1995 i beleive) and Billy Idol (White Wedding)....that being said "everything country" still appears on the top banner..one way or both ways, someone at CC is having fun...

Wayne please do your research before spewing out your verbal vomit! Kgon and Charlie are the 2 main stations "The Brew" is trying to steal listeners away from, not really KUFO!
Know if they start playing aa huge variety of ACDC and Guns n Roses (not just the big hits) than you could say they are trying to get some of Kufo's listeners, but as for now, I don't think The Brew is going after KUFO!

It sounds like they have copied KUFO. thats not what Portland needs.

At least they stayed away from Oldies and Smooth Jazz. Portland doesn't need anymore of that period!

Whatever 105.9 has failed everytime its tried new music and this will be a flop just like the past efforts. they need to learn that not every kid likes the hard junk. they had better ratings with Smooth Jazz!

Smooth Jazz is the worst format ever! Thank god Cheap Channel was smart enough to stay away from that dribble! Plus smooth jazz will never get ratings. Sorry Wayne, it WONT!

Sorry its the best. we have WAY too much rock and roll. 105.9 has tried their formant before and failed every time and this won't work either. Smooth jazz had better ratings than the oldies ratings. you can always change the dial if you want rock. I can't. there is NOTHING for people of my tastes! at least not while I am driving.

"there is NOTHING for people of my tastes! at least not while I am driving."

I agree with Wayne on this one but for different reason. Yeah, I am old. I like the original Rock and Roll that started everything. That would be from about 1954-mid 1960's. There is none of that on the radio and Trixter says we don't need any more of that, even though there is none of that on now, save for a token, over played cut from the early 60's.

However, unlike Wayne or Mr. 62, I am not going to belabor the point because it won't make any difference.

So far, I am not impressed with the new KHITS or the new Brew, although, the sound quality of KHITS seems better now than when CBS had it. Deeper and tighter lows. The question (I don't know why) now is, when are they going to turn on the HD. CBS was ready to do it before the sale. Other CC stations are HD.

> Smooth Jazz is the worst format ever!

In my world, sports talk gets that distinction. Thankfully, Clear Channel did not put sports talk on 105.9. However, I would argue that what played on 105.9 before it flipped to KQOL was not real Smooth Jazz. The overall sound of the station did not have the saxophone-driven focus of the Smooth Jazz stations of the 1990s. I think that somebody else on this forum hit the nail on the head when (s)he described the 105.9 format as "soft R&B."

Thanks Alfredo I feel the same way. The internet is where I go for smooth jazz. but we can't take our computers everywhere! maybe a non commercial station could start something.

I do Craig but its hard to pick up sometimes which is why I wish it were on FM. Or at least on a sports free AM with a better signal.

Love it good one... cheap channel... I see the brew and the suds are spilling over. Let's get drunk and s.... you know. I would not in a million years go against KUFO. Are these people trying to kill themselves off a horrible death?

The CBS stations along with K-Hits and Jammin' are in the process of moving to a new antenna. KINK has already tested from that site and the others probably won't be very far behind. It made no sense to install HD from the current antenna, knowing the other one would soon be built. When this all began, the reasoning was to put the HD into service at the same time as the rest of the installation but since that time, there is a proposal before the FCC to give all the FMs a 10-fold increase in HD power. Tests are still being conducted and results of the tests are being awaited. I don't think CBS will turn on HD at the currently authorized power, knowing that higher power could very well be on the horizon. Of course, it's possible that they'd seek higher power on an experimental basis if there's a good chance they wouldn't have to reduce it later on.

Last I heard, it was a 10dB increase, not 10X increase, in power on HD.
Yes, I knew they were waiting till they moved to the new antenna. Are KHITS and Jammin' staying with the CBS Antenna or are they going to move to the CC antenna?

My best guess is the new 105.9 format is intended to flank KUFO, KGON, Charlie, and to a lesser extent The Game and The Fan, so other CC stations such as K103 and KEX rise to the top of the ratings.

"Missed it by that much." :-) From what I understand, in this particular case, a 10-fold increase IS a 10db increase!

Yes, Semoochie. It is. It was late and my thinking was foggy. In power, it is 10X Log(P1/P2). For 10X, the log of 10 is 1.

Voltage is 20X Log(V1/V2)

Not at all going to compete with KUFO...it'll barely affect KUFO. It's a Rock AC. It targets KGON and Charlie. We'll see what Chris and Tommy do with this thing...
