Today marks the 50th Birthday of Kisn Radio. It was on this date in 1959 that The Mighty 91 was unveiled. Several months ago I put together with your help, a listing of all the original Kisn Good Guys. I thought this day would be a good time to present the later Kisn Good Guys. I've tried to include everyone but I know I've probably missed a few, so you can help me by posting the Good Guys that you heard on 91-derful & 97.1-derful between 1987 to 2007. Thanks!

Please do not misinterpret this question: when were women accepted into the world of Top-40 radio announcing? It seems that female announcers have occasionally appeared in other types of programming since at least the 1930s, but the early Top-40 formats had all-male personalities. Can somebody elaborate on this aspect of radio history?

Pioneering female DJ's did not start appearing on major Top 40 stations until the mid to late 70's. They lacked successful role models in the genre, but were added for their raw talent and EOE benefits for their employers.

From the founding of Top 40, in the late 50's through the mid-70's, it was a "box office" format. Just as our culture is now fixated on
the Top 10 grossing movies of each weekend, America wanted the Hit Parade. They tuned in to
hear new releases, and find out what was moving up strongly, chart #'s, etc. That's why stations published Top 30/40/50 lists and distributed them to record stores...or published them in the big newspaper in town.

In addition to the Box Office Format, Entertainment and Companionship were a big part of the "show business" presentation of most stations. Top 40's key demo has always been Females...with a heavy dose of Males in the same demos.

Male DJ's provided an "opposite sex" attraction for women in the audience. Ironically, early research showed women didn't like female DJ's very much...thinking they were "...trying to sound sexy." In some cases, men felt they were "talking down" to them.

As in all segments of our society, women had some catching up to do. Today we have many talented female DJ's...who can entertain simply by "being themselves." As success quickened for women, more female DJ role models provided inspiration.

Now, of course, their are talented women and men on the beach, because live/local has gone to the wayside for the almighty buck. The beancounters always looked at Programming as an expense that did not generate revenue, unlike the sales department.

They forgot that programming is the product that attracts and holds loyal listeners.

If it's true that Clear Channel could be bankrupt within 11 months...surely all the other consolidators that have been following their lead can't be far behind.

When the US Dollar is worth 10 cents, and real estate values are sky high again as the result of the depreciated dollar...and all those bad mortgages are fixed on paper....and the US Governement puts "price freezes" in place while reamping up the economy and salaries.....

Perhaps then via Consolidator Bankrupcy and new Broadcast Reregulation....perhaps then people who
love radio will be back in the drivers' seat.

However...as Hal Widsten said...the guys who know how to do it will be too old. However, perhaps not too old to mentor the next generation!!!

It seems to me that women were starting to hold down late shifts on Top 40 stations by the early '70s. I'm pretty sure Janine Wolf had a career by then or close. No other names are coming to me right now. By the way, that was the same reasoning for not playing 2 female vocalists in a row. Women didn't like them.

Craig,

Also Lara Scott who did weekend shift 2-7 on Saturdays and fill-ins where needed. She went onto to Z100, then to the LA Market where she's done very well. Currently at The Fish in LA.

He went all over the country doing that show. It was on KFRC for awhile. As a matter of fact, it appears to have killed their CHR format!

My mentor at K-GAL was Jack "Charlie" Chunn, who became PD about 3 weeks after I started there. He was a great "encourager," and I had fallen out of touch with him after his stint as National Sales Manager at KZOK-Seattle circa '77-78. I just recently got in touch with him via phone, and we reminisced about the good old days...19 cent Y-Burgers in Lebanon, and more.

As an 18 year old DJ, I went on the air challenging the professional wrestlers that were being promoted for a gig at the Albany Armory. I was using sound effects of wind-pipes cracking, and gasping....saying I was going to tear them limb-from-limb at the gig.

Charlie & I showed up with our robes, ready to get into the ring. The promoter said he couldn't let us....since he didn't want to be responsible for anything that might happen to us.
So I jumped in the ring....thanked everyone for coming...and explained we wouldn't be able to "grapple" for insurance reasons....since the promoter didn't want to be liable for anything one party might do to the party...hinting that I was very dangerous.

In retrospect....full of youthful enthusiasm and show business sizzle....and no fear!!!

Guess it's time to hang the pinata up in the studio and go at it. Who could have predicted what would be on the air for the 50th anniversary? Maybe someone will buy it from Entercom and do something a little more creative.

"Maybe someone will buy it from Entercom and do something a little more creative."

It wouldn't surprise me if Enterscum hung onto it just for spite. Hell, they kept the KKSN calls and gave it to the former KSLM.

Please no more suggestions to put KISN back on 910 on the AM band. The IF's in most super-hetrodine receivers is still 455 KHz..

They had finally been able to get a nice signal in stereo on FM, even with Entercom's four station combiner..Minck was making gains with the programming, and...pfffft...a corporate suit decided to banish oldies radio.

And the replacement was automated with recorded liners delivered with somewhat of a negative attitude. Also a very strange imaging voice that took repeated shots at the fact they were running commercials. I thought it was very interesting that any commercial broadcaster would be doing this....kinda biting the hand that was providing their revenue. Just my illustrious opinion at the time.

I have no problems at all with Real Oldies on AM! The only bummer is that if it were done, it is almost guaranteed that the station would be automated with no "real fun" element to it.

I think if Entercom would've taken the Mighty 91 and put a fairly deep oldies playlist with classic KISN jingles and liners by some of the original Good Guys, it would've been fun listening...even automated. If the presentation is tight, bright, and has clever imaging, it can be fun to listen to even if there's no live jock. Better with good live jocks, of course, but not a total deal breaker if it's automated.

The calls are owned by Clear Channel...But Kisn could be anything for the legal calls.....I have a sneaking feeling this will happen when it all shakes out. Khits is a mirror of K-103 and while it will surely have it's changes, there is a need for the real oldies...thing! The jingles will be no expense, I own all of them.
