This from All Access:

RAIDER COMMUNICATIONS, INC. is selling FM translator K281AH/FLORENCE, OR to COAST BROADCASTING COMPANY, INC. for $24,500.
_______________________________________________________

K281AH on 104.1 with 62 watts went on the air in 1998, rebroadcasting KMGE Eugene. I'm expecting the translator will rebroadcast KCST-AM 1250 Florence with a format of "local news, information and memory-making music". KCST-FM 106.9 is already serving the Florence FM area with a "format combining soft adult contemporary, oldies, and cross-over country".

106.9 KCST-FM also plays some Hot AC and AAA titles. I can't imagine that MRB is too happy about losing "Mix FM" KMGE's Florence coverage.

No Florence translator, no plans for HD radio, more jock-less time slots on all his stations. Those who know John Tilson know he is very research oriented, so maybe his high paid research company told him to forget Florence, forget HD radio, forget DJs.

"Contract was probably up and John "money bags" Tilson did not want to pay what Raider comm wanted.....so be sold it"

So how did that work? How was the translator supported?

From 47CFR74.1232:

" (e) An FM translator station whose coverage contour goes beyond the
protected contour of the commercial primary station shall not receive
any support, before or after construction, either directly or
indirectly, from the commercial primary FM radio broadcast station. Such
support also may not be received from any person or entity having any
interest whatsoever, or any connection with the primary FM station."

KCST Radio already has a AM transmitter and tower located just north of Florence with about a 20 mile coverage area. So I doubt highly the new translator will be used for any rebroadcast of 1250 AM. It's anybody's guess what Jon Tompson will use the translator for. He may opt for a whole new third FM format. I.m surprised the Casino didn't snap it up, for their own extra enterprise.

Raider owns several translators... He rebroadcasts Eugene stations in other markets outside the coverage area and the Eugene stations have no interest in them. I didn't know Raider owned this one.

He makes money by inserting a spot block in each hour that he sells himself locally in the translators market.

Then this spot break plays at a hard time each hour no matter what is playing on the translator...

Yes, interrupting commercial, songs, news, whatever, for a local spot block.

The two MRB stations that have translators run a one-second tone coming out of the :50 stopset to activate the ads on the translators. While Eugene/Springfield is hearing a local weather forecast, the translator listeners are ignoring yet another spot.

I was just over in Florence...and 104.1 is sounding great with KCST AM 1250's "Music Of Your Life." The funny thing is...now there are two stations with the "KCST" identity on the FM dial. Both stations use Doc Winston as the imaging voice.

In other translator news...Raider's Roseburg KZEL translator has finally moved from 102.3, to 102.1. This move eliminates the interference with Eugene's 102.3, and allows "Star" to be heard in the Roseburg area. Considering that 102.3 came to Eugene in 1994, this move should have happened 14 years ago. :-)
