This from All Access:

--------------------KIXI Drops MOYL, Goes Local--------------------

SANDUSKY Adult Standards KIXI-A/SEATTLE drops the syndicated "MUSIC OF YOUR LIFE" programming service after three years and returns to local programming.

"KIXI has always been a radio station as unique as SEATTLE. This is the best way we can celebrate our local connections and entertain our audience," said KIXI's DAN MURPHY, who is taking over as PD and afternoon 3-6p PT host. JIM DAI will handle noon-3p weekdays, and "THE KIXI RADIO THEATRE" block of radio dramas, including "IMAGINATION THEATER," "THE TWILIGHT ZONE RADIO DRAMAS," and "WHEN RADIO WAS," will air seven nights a week at 8p, expanding from the previous weekend airings.

It was an idiotic move for KIXI to pick up MOYL but not surprising considering how Sandusky does things. At least they came to their senses.

At the time KIXI went with MOYL, the latter was still viable with strong, well known personalities. All those people have since left and MOYL is a shell of its former self. What about this? If Oldies is dead, where do you think that leaves Standards?

Lucky for Seattle. I wish we could get KYXI back on 1520 in Oregon City.

So are they picking up KKAD's music? I don't know of many stations that have MOYL anymore. I like America's Best Music better. I wish some internet station had that that didn't have sports.

OK, if you want a PDX reference...

KIXI and KYXI operated similar formats in the 60's. Wally Nelskog, who I happened to work for at one time, was involved in both. Bob Liddle, who was a Portland jock, later spent many years at KIXI.

Also, the legendary Bob Dearborn (of Chicago fame), programmed and was on the air at KIXI in the 90's.

BTW, if this format can work, Seattle would be a good choice. Afterall, this is a city that is rather eclectic when it comes to radio. KING-FM is one of the few commercial classical stations left in the country.

I'm thinking Bruce Murdock worked there on weekends while at KLSY. That's a pretty good Porland connection!

The reason why I posted the story of Seattle's KIXI is because of its connection to the old KYXI. Plus I've found, there's always been a good response to KIXI threads on pdxradio.

I worked at KIXI-FM (KIXI-Lite) as it was called in the early 80's. At the time KIXI-AM was mostly automated. These were the days with the huge racks of reel to reel machines, seemingly where all the tapes needed to be changed within a 5-10 minute period. I had nightmares about these changes, because if something went wrong (a tape broke, or got wound wrong), it seemed that a snowball effect would take place and everything would come crashing down. Fortunately, that didn't happen very often, but made for some stressful times. How things have changed!

I remember those stressful analog automation days at KALE in the Tri cities. And that lasted until 1995 or 96! complete with audiophiles and instacarts.

And I believe ( actally the way it was explained to me a long time ago )on why KYXI was KYXI. Whoever it was that actually owned KYMN at the time ( late 60s ) changed the call sign to KYXI in lieu of a sale to the Nelscog broadcast group. Wally also had something to do with a change in the programming to a more contmeporary ' Beautiful Music " type format than the one on KYMN . They were to be a sister station to KIXI. Well , the sale fell through but the callsign remained and so did the format and the rest is broadcast history.

Modern automation systems still fail every now and then, but it seems that not as much stress is experienced when they do.

Chick Watkins is the PD for the Dial Global Adult Standards Format and is not a part of MOYL, and yeah, he's probably close to hitting 70, DG has over 200 affiliates carrying that format, including, uh, Portland yes?
