(I realize there's another April Fools' Day thread. I just thought it would be funny for at least two people on this board to immediately think "wow, it's about time," then get their written reactions afterwards! Ha ha ha!)

I was listening around midnight for format changes. KXJM and KLTH had me going for a while. I heard a few minutes of dead air on KXJM, followed by music, followed by white noise (with the carrier still on), followed by music, followed by silence, etc. There was a short amount of dead air on KLTH, as well. At first, I thought that what I was hearing on KXJM was meant to herald a format change. After midnignt, the expected music went on playing on both stations, so I concluded that I just heard hiccups associated with these stations being switched over to STLs bringing audio from Clear Channel's studio cluster. Even KQOL had me going for a little bit, when they played "Kiss Him Goodbye," near midnight.

No, it was 9 AM, March 31, 2004. That's when KPOJ switched from Golden Oldies to Progressive Talk. I have a wave file I recorded of the switch. Epic fail on my part for not posting it on the 5 year anniversary.

Five years later, regardless of one's personal opinion of the format and/or the previous format, 620's format change 5 years ago was probably one of the most successful in Portland radio history.

Actually, I loved Super 62(KPOJ)- songs mostly from before my time that I'd always heard as Oldies, mixed with others I didn't know but were completely compatible with the rest of the music, not to mention a large selection of songs! I was really sorry to see it go. I was going to mention the change to KISN but as I understand it, they didn't change format. KVAN was already Top 40. That was very clever use of the phrase, "revolutionary at the time"!

Super 62's biggest problem(other than their demographics being too old)was that KISN-FM was not only still on the air but at that time, was playing quite a bit of first decade music. If KISN had switched to Classic Hits earlier, Super 62 might have done better but again, the demographics were too old and I didn't expect it to last vey long anyway. By the way, they had about a 1 share. That puts them around the middle of the pack for an AM station and they weren't even Talk!

Translation:

"Progressives" are responsible for the "death" of Elvis on the 620 kHz frequency. They were Hell-bent on getting him off of that station so that they could have a place to air their message. Pete, delete that .wav file of the format flip now (before the progressives and eco-terrorists come after you)! They will not tolerate the existence of any evidence that another format had to be sacrificed so that their message could be heard on 620 kHz.

My method for deciphering 62's post had two main parts to it:

1) Remembering 62's posting history. When 620 flipped, 62' complained quite a bit that the "progressives" had killed off Elvis and other early rockers.

2) From having read 1984 in high school, I recall that one of the hallmarks of the authoritarian regimes in that book was that they liked to revise history for the convenience of their current policy objectives. The job of Winston Smith, the main character in that book, was to edit history books, historical documents, etc. to make them consistent with the historical "truth" that the government wanted. I suspected that 62' would see the destroyers of the "First Decade of Rock" format on 620 as having similar authoritarian tendencies, although I don't know whether he has read 1984 or not.

A few weeks ago, I downloaded a copy of "Works of George Orwell" to my Kindle... It was great to re-read High School favorites like "1984" and "Animal Farm", but as Missing_kskd pointed out on another thread, the essays and shorter works are very worthwhile reading.

"Orwell is powerful. Frankly, I like his shorter works and essays most of all. "

Thanks for the tip, missing :-)

Kindles may not be for everybody... but I find the device to be a perfectly acceptable substitue for paper books for most reading. Illustrations suffer, because of the lack of color, but for most of the materal I read, this is not a huge problem.

Semoochie,
Yes, you are right. As I said, it has been so long since I read them both, as assignments, that I confuse them.
Same thing with languages. I took both Spanish and German in High School and didn't use them for maybe 10 years and when traveling through Europe, I would start mixing and matching....using Spanish words with German while in Germany and the other way around in Spain. It decreased over time the more often I went over there. Except at Oktoberfest in Munich.....all bets were off at that time. Sitting at tables with non-English speaking "drunks" that wanted to talk to you forced you to speak their language...sorta.

I had fun giving a presentation on Rand to a local group of Atheists earlier this week. To keep things somewhat on topic, I need to mention that in the early 1960s, Ayn Rand co-hosted a radio show about her philosophy on the Columbia University radio station.

These were certainly not Rand fans. One guy got a sick look on his face when I said that the person I was talking about was Ayn Rand. However, I think that the reaction might have been worse if I had given the talk in front of a group of Ayn Rand fans because I talked about her affair with Nathaniel Brandon and how that ultimately destroyed the philosophical study club that they had built together (the Nathaniel Branden Institute). "Something rotten was going on at casa de Rand."
