Per the web sites of Rick Emerson and Tim Riley, there will be a big announcement on AM970 at 11 a.m. on Monday. I hope it’s a good announcement. His show gets me through the day!

I don't see Rick Emerson and his entourage fitting in at KUFO but I could see him at KINK or NPR. I hope he can adjust his show at KUFO, for the last year-and-a-half his show was repetitive and boring.

Dr. johnny..it seems like sour grapes because you didn't get the gig. You wouldn't be a former KUFO employee who was shown the door not so long ago who was also dismissed from Entercom? Everyone in town is familiar with your tricks. You're not fooling anyone.

If Howard Stern isn't the "target demographic" of Oregon and he succeeded, so I don't agree with Tim Riley couldn't fit in. The problem is people are losing it everyday and I don't see Rick Emerson as the person people are looking for.

It's a tremendous positive that KUFO has chosen to invest in a 100% "live" and local morning show with deep roots in the community. It obviously bucks a trend.

I hope everybody on this board who has bitched and moaned about imported shows and voicetracking helps to get the word out.

Or one could see it as just another 180 in the industry, given that Stern originally replaced a live and local KUFO morning show hosted by Bill Prescott. If another Stern comes along and CBS can base a national strategy on that, no doubt they'd do another 180.

I agree that one's sexual and food orientations should have no bearing on one's ability to have a chance to reach out to a demo. I was thinking the same thing earlier today about KUFO's morning show, it's been 11 years to the month since Prescott was replaced by Stern.

:-) And, I thought it was established long ago that everyone on this board was Marconi, even Jason Kyte when he was around! :-)

I love that Emerson got a morning gig but the liners and jingles they put together REALLY DON'T FIT the show, I hope to GOD Ritchie didn't have anything to do with that... I'm sorry but it's totally a round peg in a square hole, I'm kinda thinking the show fit better during lunchtime anyway... And I don't wanna hear music, I wanna hear Emerson!

Though "high fidelity" Emerson is cool, sounds better than even my podcasts. Just hope CBS keeps them around. And having Tim back is grand too!

Oh and whoever came up with "The Talker", I think "Solid State Radio" was cooler too.

Likely, the idea was that the "Solid State Radio" monicker would build up intrigue because people would be left wondering what it meant. That is a similar idea to "Monty Python's Flying Circus," where viewers are left wondering, who is Monty Python?

Emerson's show won't last a year on KUFO. It's awful radio. Do you really think the KUFO demo wants to hear about Star Wars action figures? Tim Riley is awful doing the news. He makes so many mistakes I can't believe he's still on the airwaves. When Emerson's show is finally dead, you all will be posting here about how his wit and intellect were just too much for the KUFO audience.

I think that "Theglide" may be right about one thing: the types of pop culture topics on the Rick Emerson show might not be a good fit for many KUFO listeners. But, I think that he is wrong about the quality of the show; Rick Emerson is GREAT radio!!

If Rick can't make it on KUFO because the demographics of the station doesn't match the demographics that would be Rick's regular listening audience, I wonder if there is enough of his regular listening audience to attract some FM station into FM-Talk here?

I tried listening to the FM-Talk that was here for a short while -- a little too much right wing rhetoric and too litte good entertainment. I didn't miss that station when it flipped... I think to Spanish right?

"FM Talk" is a format, not a choice of band. The LA station that just went away, was an example, programming aimed at a younger audience and not particularly political. KTRO was not an "FM Talk" station and as far as I can remember, we've never had one.

Semoochie: Portland did have an "FM Talk" station. KLIQ-FM signed on the air December 6, 1967 offering FM talk 6am to midnight. Then on December 11, 1967 KLIQ-FM became the first 24 hour FM Talk outlet in the Nation. Mike Turner did the overnight show.

""FM Talk" is a format, not a choice of band." KLIQ was not an "FM Talk" station. It was a Talk station on the FM dial, aimed at the existing Talk audience of the time, which wasn't particularly young and the station certainly couldn't be described as "shock talk". Some, possibly most of these stations have gone away since Howard Stern left the free airwaves.

The thing to keep in mind about any audience dominating morning show is that the format rules for the other 20 hours of the day just don't apply.

KUFO shouldn't even bother with songs during Rick's show, IMHO. Successful morning shows don't feature a "more music" format. Think Stern, Mark & Brian, Craig Walker, Imus, etc.

While they certainly have their somewhat vocal fans, music dominant morning shows don't win.

> "FM Talk" is a format, not a choice of band.

I think that using the term "Hot Talk" in this discussion, instead of "FM Talk" would eliminate most of the confusion. Now that both Stern and Leykis are no longer in syndication, I suspect that this format is much less attractive to station managements looking to flip formats, than it was a few years ago.

Agreed. The flow of the show is very much interrupted by short break - song - commercial - song - break. Emerson really does his best when he gets some momentum going. Six minute talk breaks are not long enough for him to even get started.

Lets be serious though about songs interupting the talk. He spends the first hour just talking about what he did the night before or weekend before anyhow. The Music is actually keeping the show on track.

Its much more streamlined. I do think that new listners may not really understand why KUFO put on a show to replace a very funny Adam Corrola with a show where the host talks about playing video games all weekend.

Watch out for snakes *is* funny. That's the frequency Kenneth just puts a question mark over my head.

I was a little displeased with the switch to KUFO when I first sampled the show live, but now that I'm back to listening to the (music-free) podcasts, I like it. The old airchecks (I'm about two weeks behind) are gold.

Why do you say the show sucks now? Specific examples please? The only big change I note is less Rick-rambling, which is on the whole a good thing.
