With thanks to OMI for posting this first, while the local radio board wallows in smackdowns of Glen Beck and Sirius radio.......

From his blog yesterday.....

The 8-week experimental drug therapy program was a bit disappointing, especially considering the side effects and high expectations. But, in reality, we hadn’t seen much change over these past 8-weeks. The melanoma tumors were about the same size they were when we began the experiment and my doctor’s were very careful to explain those things happen sometimes and there are other options available.

I was O.K. with that and prepared to do whatever it took to win this fight. What I wasn’t prepared for is discovering the melanoma has now spread into my brain with 5 different lesions detected by the scans and MRI’s taken last Friday. ...

There is a very popular drug maker seeking FDA approval for treatment of melanoma cancer that has had tremendous success -- so much success that it’s almost a slam dunk for approval.

And get this! There is absolutely no way anyone could be included in this study at this point, unless…they had small enough melanoma lesions in their brain. The treatment has had recent success in dissolving brain lesions, stopping the spread of the cancer in the rest of the body, shrinking tumors that already exist, and preventing them from coming back again.

It would appear I am eligible to be involved in this 4-week study that begins next week. If it works we’d continue. If not, there are still more options on the table including something called The Gamma Knife Radiation and a few months in the hospital with injections of Interleukin 2 Chemo.

Les is and was a legend of Portland radio... a long-standing example of the power of well-connected live and local. He attracted and held a large and devoted following in Portland, second only to Craig Walker (and although before their time, Barney Keep).

I wish him strenth, courage, and peace in his great battle. All the best, Les.

Thank you for this update Terry.
My prayers are with Les, I am not only an admirer but know some of the very good things he did to help my father in his organization's times of need.
We as a family are grateful to him for time and energy spent.

Les was always there for a community driven event. A Portland radio legend. This last post from Tanner was a heavy one. I wish Les the best.
The gamma knife procedure is done only at Providence. It has helped many people and it is pretty darn incredible. Its brain surgery without the mess...and believe it or not you go in at 7am and walk out at 1-2 pm. Its space age stuff.

Sad to hear this.

Just wondering... is he related to David Sarnoff? I'm not too well-versed on Portland talent, so sorry if this seems like a dumb question.

Thanks,

Ellen Kimball (formerly WTVJ Miami, WEEI and WMEX, Boston)

Radio Lady - Ellen, I don't believe Les is related to David Sarnoff. At least if he is, I never heard him mention it.

Les is a good guy. I worked with him for 14 years and wish him the best.
