I don't think we'll see format changes at anywhere near the clip we've seen in the past until there are some big changes in the economy! There may be some new simulcasts, though. |

Keizer's KYKN will be the first local signal to go dark. After that Salem's CCTV(public access) station will acquire the KYKN license for a Salem public access radio station. |

1080 will change to something else, hopefully oldies. and KEX (or KPOJ) would get the Mariners. |

So, the acquisition of KYKN by Salem's public access TV facility is confirmed and not just a rumor? If this does go through, things could get interesting. It is too bad that Portland's PCM couldn't buy out KBMS, KOOR, or KXMG. |

I'll be watching and listening on New Year's Day to see what develops. I suspect that 2009 could be a pretty tough year, but I wasn't expecting things to crash that quickly. It would really suck to be told "We're sorry, but you're out of a job. Oh, Happy New Year!" |

These will probably be smaller AM stations, possibly independently owned. There are so many stations today. Remember in the late 1980's, early 90's, we lost for a time, stations on 1010, 1230, 1260, 1290, 1410, 1480, 1550. |

The only stations I remember going dark were KISN(of course), KQIV and KLVS, right after the Elvis format. Farther south, KSLM was off for quite a while. |

KISN, KQIV & KSLM weren't in the same time period. KISN & KQIV were in the 1970's. KSLM was in the mid to late 90's. |

It's hard to imagine that KPAM and KTRO will still be doing conservative talk a year from now. Even in good economic times, it's clear there just isn't room for more than two stations to run this format profitably in the Portland market -- and the talk radio audience will probably shrink further in '09, with no big election coming up. |

I believe that 880 KWIP was also off for a while in the late 80's'(very early 90's?) 1260 KCYX was dark in the early 90's for a few months before its transformation to KLYC. |

Bottom line on these stations that were off the air for a period of time, the economy didn't look as bad as currently. However it might be worse in the East. We might hear about small Eastern AM stations buckle before we see anything locally. |

If I remember KAAR went silent on the day KKSN 910 started playing oldies. I tried to listen to 1480 one day and didn't get anything. It would have been around august of 87. |

i dont think the Fan will flip anytime soon, but i could see them limiting their local content to JUST 20/20 updates, and ditching the local talk show. It seems like the ESPN content is what people want to hear on that station more than the local jokes....and its much less expensive. |

How about KOOL 105.9? Great Music, but ratings isn't that good. |
|
Author: Trixter Thursday, December 04, 2008 - 8:05 pm |

The game's local morning show gives the listener a chance to listen to LOCAL sports talk, but negates that advantage by targeting 16-25 year old white kids with an identity and/or race crisis, and alienates just about everyone else. Meanwhile the Fan's only local show....period....fails to talk about anything remotely relevant to...well anyone. |

Kool's 12+ ratings just went up a full point! If they were going to change, it would be while hanging out in the sub-basement for a year. They could still change because the music just keeps getting older and older but at this point, I think they'll wait to see how they do in the PPM universe. If a Real Oldies station can top the ratings in Chicago, a Classic Hits station should be just fine. |

Do you think KOOL 105.9 is Oldies or Classic Hits Format? |
|
Author: Semoochie Monday, December 08, 2008 - 12:25 am |
|
Classic Hits used to be the name for a rock based, older hit format, somewhat softer than Classic Rock, with more appeal to women. When the meaning of "Oldies" became unfamiliar and negative to viable demographics, the "powers that be" settled on kidnapping the Classic Hits name for what is basically an updated Oldies format, starting in the mid-60s. A good case could be made for Kool being called an Oldies station because they are 60s intensive and don't spend much time in the late or even mid-70s. I would say that K-Hits meets the new definition of "Classic Hits" because they are not shy about playing something from the mid or late 70s and even have an occasional 80s song. Of course, if you go back to the mid-80s, KSGO was an Oldies station that would sometimes drop in a brand new song, calling it "future gold"! |

I think that the Scott Shannon "True Oldies Channel" is going to end up on one of CBS's Portland stations by July of 2009. I can see this happening as a corporate level edict to cut costs. It will be a bloodbath. |

In other cities, there are (or have been) pirate radio stations that cater to minority ethnic populations, such as creole. For the sake of linguistic diversity, I think that Frresh and his friends should start a station programmed in the Frresh dialect. An all-Esperanto station might be nice, too. |

710 KIRO is supposed to debut its sports format sometime next month. Two weeks ago, I drove into Washington and had the chance to hear the FM side of KIRO. Guess what? It's mono! To be more specific, there is no stereo pilot tone on the analog part of the broadcast. I was not able to check the HD. |

OK--KIRO AM is doing some really obnoxious stunting right now. They are playing non-stop promos stating that the talk shows are now on FM and the sports programming begins on Monday. What a waste of 50,000 watts! I could understand if they were to do something like this the day before the switch. Are they going to keep this up throughout Friday, Saturday, and Sunday??? |
