Is having "The Playhouse" on the payroll a positive or negative for CC? Will they pipe the show to other stations as another cheap alternative to live local talents? Is 107.5 being at the end of the dial...viable for any station to be sucessful?

What happens to talent during trades.

They are killed and eaten by the new owners. As a plus the organs are harvested first and sold to increase the cash flow.

Wow, that's harsh - even for you, Roger.

...thus the word "Talent". This is like "Resource" more often used these days to refer to people, who do have value.

I hate this. I try very, very hard not to do it, instead referring to people by name, and their position in less then generic terms. Instead of "applying our technical resource" to the "problem", I prefer to let my clients know we are going to put "Dave", our senior technical expert on the problem, so that he can personally make sure we realize a successful solution.

And, when we bring "Dave" into the picture, I will make sure everybody is introduced, and we work together for mutual success.

Yeah, that's more messy, but we get it done, and we work with people for a long time. I know who their kids are, they know mine, we sometimes talk about tough scenarios on a Saturday, or worse, trouble hits, and we just get it done, because all of us matter.

These things communicate the value, and is something I think is important. Relationships and connections matter. There is trust in those, instead of ugly contracts that contain as many outs as legal can possibly cram onto a paper just slightly less onerous than necessary to lose the deal.

Corporate culture is dehumanizing in this way, and many others. I understand why it is. The abstraction helps on the analytical level, and this in turn, helps to scale, replicate and make lean.

All good things.

However, just a bit more work, and you've got all those things, plus the human element --pride and accomplishment that brought this world so many great things.

Ever wonder why we don't always have those great things as often? I think this is part of why.

Anyway, getting back to radio. These "talents" are people, who possess skills and talents, each somewhat unique, and when that shows appealing to other people not so endowed.

...and they wonder why people don't identify with radio anymore. (as they fail with an increasing number of things made less human)

It's quite easy to "repurpose" "talent" to "streamline" the "enterprise" so that more "value" is delivered to the share holders. Doesn't sound all that bad does it?

Of course it doesn't, and there are people being paid good money every single day to improve on that sanitization. (bastards --though I do appreciate their word-smithing skills)

Laying off "Bob", who has worked in the business, and is known by many in the community, and who has contributed X, Y, and Z to the industry, so that he may be replaced by some pre-recorded program, to cut costs sounds a bit more ugly doesn't it?

Uglier still, if "Bob" happens to be "talented" and helped "build" the station, and put himself into it, left his mark, and will be missed.

On the other hand, once that ugly deed is done, sanitized, we are left with Otto. Nobody really cares about Otto. If we miss a piece of Otto, or another piece is cheaper, we just pop that in, free to not worry about the people, their impact and the connections that go along with them.

That's a dependency, and business hates those because when somebody actually has "talent" and presents a unique value that has appeal, they become necessary, and it's hard to get rid of necessary, because it's well...Necessary!

So, knife the baby once, "reset" "expectations" so that the "enterprise" can operate "freely" and without "critical points of failure", and scale that and it all becomes just a few numbers games, back room deals, and that's where we are today.

Sucks huh?

I think so.

Who owns the intellectual property of the "Playhouse"? Nothing was posted to indicate the full scope of the agreement.

(Laughing at Skep)

Insert "Bob & Tom" in place of "Playhouse" and it works the same.

My comment got deleted, but I said something about even if CC's sole attorney was that idiotic feller who trolls The Oregonian's obituary page, he'd ensure CC's ownership of "The Playhouse".

Unless it is specific in the contract, ownership of contents (even if YOU created it) is the guy signing your paycheck.

Randy, isn't it interesting how it is difficulty to come up exactly what one said a mere 3 hours ago?

Just look up "work for hire", and that's all you need to know about who owns what.

Unless you buy it, it will be owned by somebody else for a really long time.

Skep, your comment had already been deleted by the time I came along, but just a simple period following the previous post mentioning "the Playhouse" and "intellectual property" in the dame sentence said all that was needed.
