It's unfortune that is 1080 "The Fan" is patheticly local. Since they tend to be basically underwritten by Disney and there is a firm market for sports talk here in PODUNK...they honestly need to get there shit together. Locally produced hillbillies....

The Mariner baseball season is over. That's good news for The Fan. But doesnt matter, I still wont listen much anymore. Especially now that the Trail Blazer season is only a week away (pre-season), so The Game will be on my radio.

I agree, the 1080 update guys are not very good, but the morning guy has gotten a lot better, and I think he is actually pretty good now. I listen to colin cowherd every morning, and it was painful for a while to hear the updates, but that seems to be improving.

The guy that comes on after him still has a lot of work to do, and the afternoon drive anchor isn't terrible, but I can't stand his voice!

At this point, I think most of the game's update anchors are better.

The same can be said about every station... even the networks. If you like sports, thats the only way to get it.

ESPN TV, Comcast sportsnet, FSN....they are all like that. If you don't care, dont listen or watch.

I have an idea... how about move the Mariners to a Seattle station and not have them or the Seahawks on in Portland. Maybe we should just re-name Portland Little Seattle.

The Chris Meyers show on The Game is almost unlistenable it's so extremely boring. He might be a good pre-race Nascar host, but as a talk show host he sucks.

It's a regional thing, Theglide. Since there are no MLB or NFL teams in Portland, nor are there any anywhere close to Portland outside of Seattle, they're going to have affiliates down there. This happens nationwide.

Portland is an important market for the Mariners and Seahawks, a good chunk of season ticket holders for both, as well as lot of single-game sales, come from Portland. If you have a market of some 2.25 million people three hours away, wouldn't YOU want to market your product to that market if it doesn't already exist in that market? Why do you think the Mariners ownership has threatened to blockade any possible MLB relocation to Portland in the past? THEY want the Portland dollar!

The MLB territory issue COULD be worked around. Like the NFL, there's nothing else in the region for major league baseball. A new team in Portland would cut into some of Seattle's territory, but (especially after the Mariners' "performance" this past season) which team would YOU rather root for?

The Oakland Athletics are relocating to a new stadium being built closer to San Jose, and the San Francisco Giants have been yelling bigtime about the A's infringing on the Giants' territory. It's nothing that will stop the move...

Portland could use a major league team...You NEED something else besides the Blazers to talk about!! (And ALL sports talk shows would benefit, too...)

Even if Portland is big enough for another professional team, I don't see anyone with enough money that cares. The only way it could happen is with a no money down loan from the city and that's politics.

Certainly public funds would not be used to build a facility.

Does anyone recall how the Rose Garden was financed?
the city gave Paul Allen a ton of concessions. Why did we he has billions. He makes the profit. He's just an example of public funds used for private gain.

Paul Allen forked over a ton of $$$ to build the Rose Garden and the city chipped in also. The city controls and receives all revenue from the parking at the RG. They have made all their $$$ back and now are bringing in a hefty profit.

Now that the Sonics are gone and Seattle has a new CSN channel, Seattle residents who get CSN Seattle will be watching 55 of our Portland Trail Blazers games.

I understand why the Seattle teams market themselves here. As a fan I just think it's ridiculous to root for a team in another major city just because they are the closest major city to you with a team in that particular sport.

but everyone in Oregon who can't get Comcast, doesn't.
IMO, that's part of the marketing idea behind provider-sponsored TV channels: Make people want to subscribe to that particular paid TV provider. I know that some of the other providers say stuff like 'we'd like to carry the channel, but they want too much money per subscriber, and demand the channel be carried in every package except limited basic, so we'd have to apply to raise rates by that much for every subscriber whether they want to watch the channel or not.'

What comes to mind the most is when I had Dish Network, and on one of the Charlie Chats, they said at the time that they had no interest in ever providing the Yes network to the NY area, and openly suggested that to those that absolutely had to have the channel that they call the cable companies that offered the channel.

I can understand how much that sucks if Comcast isn't even the cable company for the local area, meaning the options for getting the channel are zero in a given area.

Then one day I realized that I don't need the ups and downs in my personal life to revolve around if a sports team won or lost.

On topic with the thread:
The morning guys on The Game mess up during their updates also. They often times try to air a clip from an interview or live action and get nothing but dead air for a few seconds, then the clip plays.

As a listener, neither station is impressive in my opinion.

The Game:
- The morning show on The Game reminds me of listening to teenagers.
- Fox Sports is okay, but it is national so it is just that same stuff being talked about on any other national show.
- Canzano's show is okay. He does a nice job with interviews. I'm not a fan of his interaction with his producer. It seems fake to me. (Just my opinion.)
- I like Wheeler's show but it is not something I want to hear five nights a week. I'd prefer to just hear him maybe on a Saturday morning or something for 2 hours.

The Fan:
- Colin Cowerd does a nice job with his show. Unfortunately, it is national show. I'd really prefer a local show in the morning. Unfortunately, I can't handle the teenagers at The Game, so I listen to Dennis Miller on AM970.
- I'm not a fan of Tirico's show so I don't listen.
- Dan Patrick's show is great. Unfortunately, it is SIX hours old. Yuck. Therefore, I just listen via podcast and listen to Rick Emerson.
- The afternoon show is local. The hosts are okay - nothing great. The only thing going for it is that it is local.

I'm just a listener who likes talk radio. Clearly, the folks managing these stations think the lineups are okay. I think they would do well to listen to other stations via web streams - such as Houston, Chicago, Charlotte, Columbus, Seattle (to some degree) and New York. They might see that sports talk radio in these cities is much different than here in Portland, Ore. In my opinion, those cities have real sports talk radio - not so much in Portland. I doubt that most of the local hosts in Portland, other than Wheeler and Canzano - could make it in the other cities mentioned above.
