Driver had right-of-way and wasn't cited by police for anything.

Cyclist (a single father) was not wearing a helmet.

But how much do you want to bet the radical cyclist elements in Portland will be blaming the driver? How about encouraging Portland cyclists to obey the traffic laws, as they are required to do? Instead, what I hear more of from the cyclist lobby is a need to allow Portland cyclists to be able to ignore traffic laws like stopping at stop signs. How many more tragedies like this will that cause?

(I can't imagine the guilt I'd feel as the driver in this situation, even if I was obeying the traffic laws and the cyclist apparently wasn't.)

I would feel pretty bad too.

Cars are bigger, and if bikers are not going to pay attention to that, there is going to be trouble.

This whole discussion is frustrating for me, because this stuff just isn't hard.

Of course the bicycle lobby will blame the driver, even though the bicyclist was not observing right of way AND not wearing a helmet.

I guess this is just Darwinism in action.

Actually guys, if you go over to the bikeportland.org site, I think they have some pretty fair coverage on it.

bikeportland.org is going to have to eat this one. Yes, there will be anger, but deep inside they'll know this guy was an idiot and didn't help their cause.

Chances are the cyclist darted across this intersection before. The odds just caught up with him. When cyclist's do this on red lights, they dart across the street fast and that is recipe for disaster if the cyclist doesn't see a vehicle coming. They depend on vehicles stopping but if the cyclist is darting so fast, it's difficult for a driver to catch.

Now the "O" is saying the vehicle driver will have to live with this for the rest of his life, like it was his fault! Just yesterday I saw a cyclist dart cross Canyon Road close to Sunset Hwy. in high traffic! I just shook my head.

I've a hunch he'll get over it fast. And I'm a avid bicyclist. The fact he wasn't wearing a helmet indicates to me he didn't give heck about his own life or his son's well being. So why should we?

Dunno what it is about cyclists (and pedestrians) in this town... Many of them seem to think "Cyclist and pedestrians have the right-of-way" is totally automatic... or an assisted-suicide law...

I am a courier, and find myself having to avoid peds' and cyclists' stupid moves WAY too often, usually after which they yell at ME like it was MY fault that I was legally driving through an intersection when they decided to charge through without bothering to look.

I was driving near the MAC Club on Saturday afternoon. I was stopped at a red light at Lincoln High School. Two bikes come up beside me, see that there's no cross traffic, and proceed to run the red light. My first thought was "THAT'S a prime reason why motorists hate bicyclists so much!"
