Two Words.....Magic Jack. You can get one at best buy. I have not done it yet but I hear good things about it. It's $39.95 for the device and the first year then $20.00 a year after that.

I have DSL at home (required) and use Skype for my "home" phone service - costs $60/year for a 503 number, but I can receive/make calls on my laptop anywhere (or from any other computer I'm signed into Skype on), not just at home.

I also just upgraded my T-Mobile cell service to unlimited calling for $49.99/month.

In case anyone is interested, T-mobile's 3G rollout is continuing at a fast clip. While the Portland area already has 3G, Salem and Eugene will be lit up around June-July.

Yeah, I just got a new T-Mobile phone (as part of signing a new contract), a Sony Ericsson TM506, which is the only one of T-Mobile's 3G meager phone offerings that does "true 3G." T-Mobile tried to disable tethering (put your laptop on the internet via cell phone), but it was easy to find a way to install a default Sony firmware that allows tethering...

Anyway, if you can pick up 3G...WOW! It's pretty fast. I did one speed test that showed 1.7Mbps download speed, though more typically I get only about 700Kbps or 800Kbps. That's very usable for basic internet surfing and work.

At home (where I don't really need 3G, as I have DSL), I can pick up 3G upstairs but not downstairs (where I otherwise have great reception, just not 3G). That leads me to believe 3G reception in Portland may not be ideal everywhere yet. I have tried it in Tualatin and a few places in NE Portland though and so far I can pick it up a lot of places.

As for the phone, it's only OK. It has some great features like GPS integrated with Google Maps (not bad for a free phone), but the user interface is a bit slow, and it has a few annoying tics I don't like. Oh, well, no cell phone is perfect!

Unfortunately Tualatin is the "outer limit" for 3G at this time as you venture down south. I'm hoping when Salem comes on the I-5 corridor between PDX and there is covered.

Oh, my new 3G Sidekick arrives may 12th. For sale: Sidekick 3 (1G only) $100.
