Freedom Tower is out, World Trade Center is in.

I for one am glad they've discarded the Freedom Tower name. It reeks of Bush era faux patriotism.

I think that in 2001, "Freedom Tower" really did sound good, but today it would seem a little campy. I think that the name change was a good idea, but they should have been a little more original in picking the new name.

The irony of the following passage, near the end of the story, really socked me in the face:

quote:

The newspapers said the change came after board members voted to sign a 21-year lease deal with Vantone, a Chinese real estate giant [closely affiliated with that country's government], which will become the first commercial tenant at Ground Zero.

To clarify, the irony is that the first tenant in a building that many see as an important symbol of American capitalist enterprise would be a company that is closely affiliated with a communist government. I can easily remember a time when something like this would have been inconceivable.

It's good. If the terrorists try to destroy it again, they'll also have to deal with the Chinese. Since the Chinese will pretty much own this country soon, we should end up being pretty good friends. Saves have a big military.

I heard they were gonna mount three or four of these bad boys on the top of the tower:

Phalanx, The Office Accessory Of The Modern age

I sure hope those traffic copter's don't stray to close to the new tower!

Hey, the Chinese are good for this country. Their restaurants keep the cat population in check!
