Given the critical tone of the lyrics to "Radio, Radio," I suspect that Emerson is trying to foreshadow that bad things are on the horizon. I don't think that moving to KUFO is likely in Mr. Emerson's future.

Well I have to agree with Alfredo on that note. With all of the shakeups lately, and of course with the ever shrinking budget of almost ANY company you could EVER think of, I highly doubt a switch is in the horizon. I do however wish Rick the Best and ONLY the BEST. He is one of the few who made my old job in Portland enjoyable. And for that I wish him GOOD things. LONG LIVE RICK EMERSON!

Rick announced right before the show ended today that today's Leykis show (which has been in repeats for the last couple weeks, of course) airs its final broadcast today, and taking its place on Monday @ 3PM is the Mike O'Meara Show, followed by Phil Hendrie.

Good...I'll have a reason for continuing to listen after Rick now. Although, in my opinion, Mike O'Meara isn't as good a show as it was with long-time partner Don (Don & Mike Show), who retired, it's still a much better listen than Leykis was.

Local radio man Rick Emerson, who currently talks about all things pop culture, obsessive-compulsive, bacon and Battlestar Galactica from 11 am to 3 pm on Portland's AM 970 The Talker, is taking over KUFO 101 FM's prime morning show slot (5-9 am) starting this Thursday. from Willamette Week

And the Rick Emerson Army rejoices.

He'll replace the Adam Carolla Show. No loss there.

According to CBS Radio marketing honcho Susan Reynolds, the Rick Emerson Show is sliding over to its sister station KUFO, which shares a downtown Portland studio with 970 AM, with its team intact—including producer Sarah X. Dylan and whipping boy Ritchie Bristol. Even better, the show will reunite Emerson and producer Sarah X. Dylan with their beloved longtime newsman Tim Riley, who was laid off from CBS Radio last December. The layoff prompted Emerson to launch a "Laid off Journalists" program on his 970 AM show, that invited unemployed media types to read the news on his show each day.

Emerson's show, filled with Rick's free association diatribes and heaps of love for all things nerdy, has long been a cult favorite obsession among Portlanders—the show even boasts its own "Army" of local fans. No doubt the morning drive time slot will only up the recruitment numbers.

In fact, let's think about this.

Rick's "army" is comprised of who? Younger folks, folks who go out at night, or stay up late playing first person shooter games online, or work at night maybe, eh? Will they be able to move over to this new slot with Rick? OR, will he now cultivate a new audience, while retaining some of the old?

You pros weigh in here please with your perspective.

I think there are two valid questions...

Rick has a lot of great things going for him that should attract new listeners. I suspect the members of his existing midday audience that sleep in mornings will continue to do that, but the rest will sample the new location.

Smart, funny, topical, quick-witted, supportive of his fellow team members, transparent with his audience and always willing to "read the day" and react to it rather than storm ahead with prepared material.

I'm really glad to see they were able to get Tim Riley back on board. Congrats to all.

I'm VERY happy for Rick and his team.

I thought about recording my auto's crappy reception from his 970 show to document how much of a fan I have to be to tolerate that much static to hear every other word ( and to document my lack of knowledge of how to increase the clarity of said signal...ahem ) and send it to him.

But this is better.

And Fever, I will remember that name. Should I put it in a long-term memory folder or a short-term folder? When can I expect to hear it again? And where? And what is it? Is Schnitt a person, place or thing?

I hope that 970 keeps its existing format because they carry Phil Hendrie! I am wondering, however, what the programming strategy will be now that Emerson is no longer the program director of that station. Out here in Hillsboro, nighttime reception of 970 is decent, although the signal seems a bit weak for being 5000 watts (see the thread "Coverage of KCMD, KPDQ-AM, and other hilltop AM stations" for the discussion on this).

Here's the R&R announcement:

--------------------Emerson Moves To FM In Portland--------------------

By Keith Berman

Rick Emerson, enjoyed in middays on CBS Radio talk KCMD-AM/Portland, Ore., is heading to the wonderful world of mornings -- and stereo -- as he packs up and heads across the hall to mornings on rocker KUFO. Emerson, along with news guy Tim Riley, producer/co-host Sarah X. Dylan and Ritchie Bristol, will plug the gap created when Adam Carolla's show ended.

The crew, along with what the press release describes as "an extended family of media-saturated, caffeine-filled, minutiae-obsessed completists," will begin doing their business on KUFO on Thursday, March 12.

"When I first moved to Portland, all I heard was, 'You gotta listen to Rick Emerson,'" says KUFO OM/PD Chris Patyk. "A year later, I was telling my friends, 'You gotta listen to Rick Emerson.' It's my sincerest hope that all of Portland will soon be saying the same thing."
______________________________________________________________

Here's All Access with their take:

------------The Rick Emerson Show Heads To KUFO Mornings------------

CBS Active Rock KUFO/PORTLAND, OR names THE RICK EMERSON SHOW as its new morning-drive program, starting THURSDAY, MARCH 12th, 5-9a. He replaces the recently defeunct ADAM COROLLA SHOW. A fixture on the PORTLAND radio airwaves for the last decade, RICK has most recently been hosting the midday show at sister News/Talk/Sports KCMD-A. The move to KUFO will reunite EMERSON with producer and co-host SARA X. DYLAN and newsman TIM RILEY.

"No show has built more of a following on PORTLAND radio over the last decade than THE RICK EMERSON SHOW." commented KUFO OM CHRIS PATYK. “RICK's fresh and irreverent approach to broadcasting fits perfectly on KUFO and screams live and local. I'm proud to have RICK, SARAH and TIM on our team." Patyk continued, "When I first moved to PORTLAND, all I heard was, ‘You gotta listen to RICK EMERSON.’ A year later I was telling my friends, ‘You gotta listen to RICK EMERSON.’ It's my sincerest hope that all of PORTLAND will soon be saying the same thing.”

-------------Rick Emerson Moves to Morning Shift at KUFO--------------

by Kristi Turnquist, The Oregonian
Monday March 09, 2009, 11:13 AM

Big news, radio fans! Rick Emerson is making the leap from midday on KCMD-AM to the morning drive-time slot at sister station KUFO-FM. "The Rick Emerson Show" will start airing from 5 a.m.-9 a.m. this Thursday. Emerson's quick-witted savvy and pop culture obsessions have won him a devoted following of fellow pop culture geeks. The dawn patrol show also brings back newsman Tim Riley, rejoining Emerson and producer/co-host Sarah X. Dylan. To celebrate, KUFO has posted a series of funny videos on its site.

There have been several anonymous posters on this board, past and present, who have made predictions that have turned out to be right. However, I am not inclined to take the predictions seriously due those posters' choosing to remain anonymous. It is nothing personal; it is just that when some unknown person comes on here, makes a prediction, and then says, "Trust me. I have my sources," I do not believe that I can, in good conscience, take that prediction seriously because I do not know who the person is or what his (or her) true motives are.
