Has something happened over at KINK?
Long time Lights Out host Sean Martin has not been on air for the last three weeks.
Did I miss some postings about changes?

Sean Marten is filling in for Les Sarnoff in PM Drive, while Les recuperates from his intensive cancer treatment.

Love Sean (Hi Sean!), but let's hear it for the late Rusty Kimball who's genious spawned Kink's Light's Out circa 1981. And a little help here..can anyone remember who the first guest were in Studio B, otherwise know as the Kink Production room?

With all due respect to Rusty, didn't Scott Carter originate Lights Out back in the 70's?

Could it have been "The Jazz Expose'," which ran a half hour before Lights Out circa '81 or '82, that Rusty created?

Tom- Thanks for catching the fact that it was indeed Mr. Carter who brought us Light's Out originally.

During my high school days as a request line operator at KGW radio, while doing the late shift till midnight, I would make my way to the KINK studio's on occasion and suggest a song or two to Scott for Lights Out. And he obliged.

And for many of us Scott was the guy who hooked us up. With decent coffee. He ground beans and boiled water and used a Melitta decanter and every time he made a pot of coffee the entire building would suddenly develop a reason to visit FM. With an empty coffee cup.

Wow. I still remember that first cup of real coffee.

The machine down the hall was never the same.

Okay, so the mind fades a bit for me from time to time. My former KINK co-worker Carl Widing brought the error to my attention. In my haste to bring up my late friend Rusty, I meant to say "Live" Lights Out, but even now I'm not so sure that's the right program title. Mia Culpa

Oh Murdock who can forget all those candles lit in the old KINK studio's during Lights Out. Even for this pimpled faced, long haired high schooler it was pretty cool.

Wayne...about the Ocean sets on Lights out, I imagine the computer's AV software which now puts out most of KINK's programming can't cope with, or hasn't been programmed with, the insertion of "the ocean sound effects" which required manual, live intervention from either Sean or the overnighting Donna Negus(RIP).

Speaking of old KINK jocks. Any news or whereabouts of Michael Black? He was a guy not much older than I was when I was working at KGW.

I remember Les doing Lights Out for a long time. KINK just started using live deejays when I was hired at the Post Office. I especially loved the Ocean Sets. And Jeff you came just before him if I remember!

Right after, Wayne. Long, convoluted radio scenario, as most of them are. I do believe he helped me get a gig at KINK, although I had some other pals there as well (and still do).

God speed, Les.

Don't know the whereabouts of Michael Black but Dan Lissey is no longer with us. I ran into his daughter coming out of a 12 step meeting and she said Dan had a heart attack some years ago. You'll remember Dan from Opus 102 early 1980's

Is Les any better? I went through cancer in 85 and that was terrible so I understand what he's going through. Are you still in Reno Jeff?

KINK did "lights out," but the "Night Tingler" burned candles in the KGW Control Room....and we were afraid he would burn the place down.

Just for the record, there was a Lights Out San Francisco that predated the fabled KINK show by several years. Hosted by the late deejay Voco (Abe Kesheshian), the concept of the show was very laid back and mellow, but was more of a blues, soul and jazz affair. KINK's version evolved into something quite different. Scott Carter, Les, Rusty Kimball, Tom Neumann, and Sean all hosted Lights Out (Portland) at one time or another; Sean Marten doubtless the longest.

I loved the jazz that KINK played and wish they would play that again. Or at least have a site where we can here it. I was especially a fan of Hiroshima and George Benson and John Klemmer

Wayne-You can listen on line to 105.9 FM The Wave out of Coos Bay. It's a combination of Smooth Jazz and cool vocals. We play Hiroshima, GB and John Klemmer....plus so much more.

Wayne-

I know what a big fan of HD you are...but I would also like to remind you that the Smooth Jazz format plays on 103.3 HD2 with no commercial interuptions. Enjoy Hiroshima, GB, Klemmer and many more great artists...Chris Botti and on and on.

Sadly, no Elvis or roots of rock like the old Super 62 - but it is very smooth.

Chris,

I'm really glad that KYSJ is finally streaming online. Unfortunately, the reception of the 105.9 signal is really fuzzy, for some reason.

Wayne,

Don't you have an HD Radio? Then you can listen to Smooth Jazz 103.3 HD2.

Radioxpert-

From time to time the on line signal needs tweaking. Somedays it sounds great other times for whatever reason it's over modulated or fuzzy. I think they're still figuring somethings out.
