Glen Beck's show great entertainment. I haven't heard Curtis Sliwa's show for a few years. Anyone know what kind of ratings Sliwa gets in other markets?

James Derby is at it again. He stomps on the heart of his parents. (Since he started at KUIK).

KUIK has been carrying Glenn Beck live in the same time slot as KXL will for a while. The move to Glenn Beck, a known susbtance, rather than taking a chance on Fred Thompson, who is taking O'Reily's reins.

Also if this is correct the Larson show nationwide appears to be after midnight. So he can't even get ahead of two other talkers in his hometown for his national show?

Does that mean Derby thinks the Larson National Show sucks, or is KXL in financial trouble that they might only be carrying shows that pay to get on the air?

The KXL website has Lars 12-4, so since he does his national show beginning at 3, I would guess the 3pm hour will be the first hour of the national show.

Here's the official All Access announcement:

---------------Changes Coming To KXL, KXTG Lineups---------------

ROSE CITY RADIO Talk KXL-A and Sports KXTG (SPORTSRADIO 95.5 THE GAME)/PORTLAND PD JAMES DERBY makes some changes, effective MARCH 2nd, that give the FM more local content.

On THE GAME, the station is moving its local "WHEELS AFTER WORK" 6-8p evening show with PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS voice BRIAN WHEELER to noon-3p PT as "WHEELS AT WORK," replacing FOX SPORTS RADIO's CHRIS MYERS and STEVE HARTMAN. JOHN STRONG moves into the 6-7p PT slot. That gives the station 10 hours a day of local talk, interrupted only by PREMIERE's JIM ROME 9a-noon. The station carries FOX SPORTS RADIO overnights and weekends.

At KXL, PREMIERE's GLENN BECK moves from 6-9p PT to 9a-noon, filling the gap to be left when WESTWOOD ONE's "THE RADIO FACTOR WITH BILL O'REILLY" ends its run. LARS LARSON's local/statewide show will shift from 11a-3p to noon-4p, with MICHAEL SAVAGE shifting an hour later to 4-7p. The station is adding ABC RADIO NETWORKS' CURTIS SLIWA for 7-10p PT (live) and RADIO AMERICA's ROGER HEDGECOCK for 10p-midnight.

actually Beck isnt live 9-12 local, he's live 6-9, but it will be interesting to see how KUIK reacts, will they shift the show? KUIK recently picked up Michael Medved, late of KTRO, will Prager be next now?

Well Derby and Larson are full time hypocrites. Lars will be on KXL from 12 to 4 with the last hour being his national show. So he will only be broadcasting his local show for three hours( he now does 4 hours a day for his local program) a day collecting W-2 Income and the additional hour will be 1099 Income that he receives from Westwood One.

So unless Lars is taking a 25% cut in pay he is a hypocrite on everything. He asks government workers to take a cut in pay, but now Lars is working fewer hours, and based on Derby's track record, there will be no cut in pay.

Good Lord, what will the neocons think of next.

I can tell, Saveitnow, you're not a radio guy. Doing even just a 3 hour talk show takes a lot more preparation in the interim. This means you're looking at at least 3 hours, if not more, to prepare for the show.

Plus, from what I understand, Lars also does his own calling to certain affiliates for his national show and actually does some of the selling himself. So add 1-2 hours extra for that.

I'm just like others, who think Lars is a complete and utter blowhard. However, I do not and will not question the guy's dedication to his job, which is much more than the 3-4 hours worth of on-air time that he does.

Anyone who works on a current events-type show has to do show prep, or you end up stumbling your way through.

Prep? He just spits out the GOP talking points, and Derby fills in the rest.

Teachers spend hours before and after classroom hours in prep, continuing education, etc. They also spends days before and after the school year doing much of the same.

However Lars and friends only count their "air time" when calculating their hourly rate.

As you sow, so shall you reap. Lars must take a paycut or remain a hypocrite.

Saveitnow,

It appears that you do not have any grasp of the amount of necessary preparation for a current events show. Looking through newspapers, going over blogs and news aggregate sites, editing sound clips, recording commercials, etc.

Lars's politics aside, he does a lot of work to earn his pay. It's the same with people like Ed Schultz, Rush Limbaugh, and other talking heads. You always do show prep before going on, no matter what you do.

It appears that you don't know, nor do you appreciate, anything that radio people have to do to prepare for their shows. I mean, do you think Bob Miller just comes in without preparing for his show? If you think that, you're brain damaged.

You don't like his politics. Great. Go expound on it on the politics side of the board. But don't be sanctimonious when you don't know a single thing about what you talk about.

You didn't read my post Kork, in other positions prep is necessary (School Teachers), but Lars and his Brown Shirt followers only want to count classroom time as the time that teachers should be paid for.

It would appear to me that you must be some bodies intern, just tell us who's, then we can take you seriously.

I retired from the industry 2 years ago. I was the show producer for a morning show in Billings, Montana and for a talk show in Las Vegas. Started in 2001, ended in late 2006.

That is why I know what I know. Because I actually saw all the stuff that happened and was a part of it.

As for your point, I don't believe teachers are an adequate group of people to cite. I believe it would be government employees, as in ones that report directly to the state government. People like the mid-level managers at ODOT, etc.

Teachers, through their unions, negotiate with school districts. It's largely out of teachers' hands. Not that it's a bad thing.

Just like every other Neocon (I assume since 80% of all talk shows have a bent to the right wing (which is fact)) if the facts shoot down your arguement, change the facts or change the subject.

The fact still remains KXL will compensate Glenn Beck's distributor for three hours, while they compensated O'Reilly's distributor for two hours. If Derby really did his job, and followed the same philosophy that Derby and Lars use against teachers then Lars would take a 25% pay cut, but he won't.

Fascism rules amoungst the neocons and most of the media!!!! You just won't admit it.

I had the chance to meet, and talk with Glenn Beck when he was doing "The Christmas Sweater" in Seattle. How nice to meet someone who cares about family values, and has a kind heart.

Glenn is one of the most sincere, nice, honest, comfortable people I've met in radio. It makes me wish more "professionals" in radio were like this.

Also.... Dr. Savage is a genius. Good job portland!

Glenn is a "different" conservative talk host.
He doesn't "spoon feed" you like Rush and Sean et al.
He uses old "morning show" humor to get his point across, and just as raisin has stated, it's not an act, he is a real and genuine person. I also had the privilege of meeting with him and it was a wonderful experience. He is sharp, knows economics very well and has passion, which is so needed in our industry. I also find that the listeners who like him most are under 55. Over that, they just don't "get" him.

This thread reminds of a song by another Beck:

Nausea

Glenn is by his own admission (besides a recovering alkie) an entertainer. Giving him credit for being smart about anything is over the top. He's a talk show host first and foremost. His conservative dogma finds favor with the conservative masses because he knows what to say to keep them listening. Like Rush. Like Hannity. Their ratings strength lies in their lack of preparation, avoidance of facts that challenge their point, and an all around understanding of their demographic. I will give him credit for not trying to hide his warts, so that they don't become an issue. He does know his place in the hierarchy of media importance. An entertainer with right side leanings is nothing new and there are plenty of wannabees waiting in the wings for him to fade. Glenn's unique ability to twist logic and call it common sense is a mixture of crassness and myopia. He is guilty of either not doing the research on topics he wants to seem informed on or just ignoring select information counter to his plan to deliver the right notes in his right wing liturgy.

Broadway: it's like talking to a wall here.
You will never win and they will just keep jumping on ya.
It gets so tediously boring.
Kind of like Air America was. Forget that it was liberal, it was tedious and boring.
Glenn Beck is neither.
Just the other day I heard that "brilliant" Thom Hartman, while he was making fun of Rush, say "bring on the pork" and continued on telling listeners how great having the pork in the stimulus package was.
I guess THAT type of talk is "smarter"?
Whatever.

LOL!!!

Thom is absolutely brilliant. No question on that.

Having PORK in the package IS THE POINT!

When money is made available, it flows through our economy. People trade with it. Money by itself is worthless. It's only value lies in what can be obtained with it, and that depends on the trading party believing those dollars will buy them something they need.

A PORK project, say building a school, bridge, fixing a road, whatever, makes money available to ordinary people in trade for work.

When we give it directly to a bank, for example, only those people who already have money really get to make use of it.

When we give it directly to people, they buy stuff with it! Well, what do we make here? Not much, so that money flows to China. That one is ugly because we either printed up some, thus diluting our currency, or borrowed it from them to buy their stuff!

PORK then, is a way of making money available to the people, and on it's way through to the top, we get stuff! That stuff has value! That stuff can then be leveraged to make more value in the future as those with money can apply it using that stuff to perform a service, or provide goods.

Dodger, Broadway: "You won't win" because "they keep jumping on you", is a dodge. Go see the list on the other side.

Trying to blame people for being advocates for their ideology is foolish. The problem isn't that they won't listen, or that it is tediously boring, or that there are too many of them, or any other thing.

The problem is that you simply do not support your position well! That's it! If you do support your position well, then it's actually a discussion, everybody learns something, we see better ideas and there are warm fuzzies all around!

Thom supports his point of view extremely well. He also regularly brings contrary views onto his show and asks them to support it as well.

"Making fun of Rush" is extremely easy! He asks for it. Frankly, he profits from it. No harm, no foul there. Trust me on that. Rush really does not care.

Be that as it may, it's easy because his opinion is not very defensible most of the time. When you understand how money works, hearing this stuff called PORK is simply laughable, in that Rush delivers it with all seriousness, when it's just not! (buffoons tend to do that)

Now, I'll go back to the other side and continue to have a good time supporting what I think, and learning from others doing the same, while you two lob pot shots over the wall, from the "safe zone", where it's not good form to just call you on your BS.

(I'm thinking that's another entry on the dodge list too --retreat to base! LOL!!!)

Well Lars admitted today at 7:50 am that his salary was being cut due to the shorter local show beginning March 2nd.

When he repeated the rant at 11:07 am he dropped the reference to his pay cut.

The reason for dropping the reference is he asking for teachers to reduce their pay but work the same number of days.

Yet he received his pay cut due to the fact that less revenue will be received from lower local advertising revenue as the local show is being reduced by 25%.

So if he wasn't such a hypocrite he would agree that if the teachers receive less pay they should be allowed to work fewer hours. But Lars is a first class hypocrite, just like all of his GOP buddies who voted against the Stimulus, yet go back to their districts and talk up how their district will benefit from Stimulus programs.
