I just checked some of the websites for Eugene stations for the first time in about a month . . . It looks like Jerry Allen is no longer on the KUGN morning show and Justin Myers' sports idol program is toast on The Score . . .

Was there a shake up at Cumulus?

Jerry has accepted full time employment with
the University of Nike as thier play by play for football/basketball/baseball. Good move for Jerry with the state of radio layoffs and downsizing.

Jerry will continue to be heard on Clueless (KUGN) as they are the
OSN affiliate, and they will no doubt continue to simulcast football on KZEL. Jerry still works for Clueless, he is contracted through them, but with the added duties from the U of O whom he also is contracted through dropped the morning show from his schedule.

Inside Radio don't have much on this either:

Details are not confirmed, but it appears there was a round of Cumulus companywide staff reductions Friday -- with layoffs in markets from Ann Arbor, Toledo and Bridgeport, CT. The cutbacks appear to largely be among air personalities. They follow similar reductions made in November.

So Dan??? Jerry is no longer with KUGN???? That's funny I thought they had the rights to Duck football, BB, and Baseball. I guess I was mistaken then. Your right Dan.... Jerry Allen wont be heard on KUGN any more????? Becuase the ducks must now have a radio station we all have not heard about yet???? Or is it you who don't have the facts right Dan???? Does KUGN have the rights???? Will Jerry still be heard on KUGN????????? Is KUGN still an OSN affiliate????

Your a frickin idiot Lonny, Jerry is no longer employed with Cumulus. Jerry's voice will still be heard during duck basketball/baseball/football on KUGN. KUGN still has the rights to broadcast the duck sports....and YES KUGN is still a OSN affiliate.

Get a frickin clue and get your facts straight

Clueless made cuts in Youngstowns 8 stations as well (one company in a market this size with 8 stations... BULL SHIRT!) MOSTLY AIR TALENTS!

now they suck worse!

CC and clueless have almost all the pie in this market. A more perfect test bed for reregulation doesn't exist!

Together the best station is mediocre.

So all the above statments remain valid Jerry will still be heard on KUGN just as I said.....The football games will be simulcast on KZEL
Just as I said.....He assumed other duties so they cut him from the morning show Just as I said.....ALL statements that got me called a frikin idiot? I might say the same for you two especially you giant! Dan you work there for chris sake! you should know this.
The only thing is, altought Jerry might not actually be employed by Clueless....he will still be contracted! They pay the freight by him doing those games as part of being an affiliate! yet another valid statement. I really think it is you two who are the frikin idiots here! No Rumors....no hearsay.....just the facts.

I know exactly what's going on..I just feel its none of anybody's damn business except Jerry's.
Speculate all you want.
And to add fuel to the fire...I'm running away with Jerry's wife to Cabo..he doesn't know it yet..I'm sure he'll understand!

I know exactly what's going on..I just feel its none of anybody's damn business...
I remember wondering what happened to radio personalities when I'd no longer hear them on a station, and/or whoever was on the air wasn't saying '...filling in for...'

Recently, in a completely different kind of place (nowhere near radio), I got the inside info. on someone's firing.

They could have just said 'such and such is no longer here,' and I would've been just fine, the planet would continue to revolve the sun, and life on planet earth would still continue.

hate to correct you, Craig.....But Alan only did mornings on KPNW-AM for a little over a year. He replaced me when I was fired after 18 years on KPNW..the last 12 in the morning slot.
Alan was brought down the hall from KOOL mornings to replace me because he was on contract and I was monthly. This happened when Clear Channel sold out to BiCoastal and they have been scrimping ever since.

Keep trimming those budgets boys, and trim yourselves right out of existence. You can't ALL run syndicated programming. How soon before Rush is going Head to Head with Rush, Beck vs Beck....
Just like a retailer trimming staff. You get too thin in providing CUSTOMER SERVICE, your customers go elsewhere. Self fulfilling....
Having good business sense is fine. Remember you also need to have some sense of the ACTUAL BUSINESS you are in. CC wannabes... NEWS FLASH... If you follow the lead of mediocre, what is the highest level you can achieve?

Mediocre.

How can radio stations be serving the community interest when they just relay national satellite programming? Disgraceful!

Maybe when the 50kw transmitter goes down for a half day and no listeners call in, someone will proclaim there is no community interest left.

It seems everyone is catching the last train for the coast...just as Don Mclean predicted.

Just more evidence the Federal Government really screwed up when they allowed big corporations to own all the stations in the country. Bi Costal has completely destroyed their Eugene cluster. They now have vertually no one on the premises to handle breaking news, dead air, or two spots running at the same time. They have raped this community beyong belief. I can't believe that anyone with an ounce of brains would spend any money to advertise on their stations. If I want to listen to a computer station, I can find many on the internet or dial up Xm or Sirius in my car. Local radio is now in the hands of the listener supported stations like KRVM, KLCC, KWVA and KWAX. I wish nothing but the worst for Bi Coastal and all the big corporate stations. May they rest in HELL!

.....Bi Coastal has completely destroyed their Eugene cluster....

Of course these our just OUR opinions, and surely someone must think they are doing fine and on the right track in today's business environment.

BC is another regional group with too much debt service. I refer to them as CC WANNABEs because they seem to follow the playbook then take it a step further by utilising even fewer staff. I am surprised they don't SIMULCAST with other stations in their stable to save even more $$$.

I guess as long as someone is willing to advertise, and the expenses are covered, there is no reason to try that live, local, community focused thing.....

I was a victim on two different occasions from two different regionals pulling that simulcrap.
It's worse than VTing. At least VTs can sound local.... the simulcast is awful especially when the stations are close enough that you can hear them all as you scan the dial. makes you think of ground bleed.

The Bi Coastal Eugene cuts may actually be more of a local problem than a corporate one. From what I've heard from people there, sales dropped big time in 08 compared to 07. If you're only bringing in half as much money, you've got to cut someplace. Maybe getting better salespeople is the answer. I don't think BiCoastal corporate wanted to cut so many people, but they were left with little choice. Or so I hear.

Yes, but cutting too much can put you into a death spiral. So the soulutions are:

Start from square one with a bare bones staff servicing existing accounts, but that doesn't allow for your sales staff to solicit new business.

Use you existing staff to beat the bushes for new business while using newer staff to handle existing clients. The drawback there is risking a newer salesman to mishandle an existing account and lose them.

Set realistic, achievable goals for your staff. provide in house contests that reward those who exceed goals. Look for steady growth.

Spend the money, promote the hell out of the place and create the best damn group in the area.
Be agressive and on top of everything. Your name everywhere, your people at every event.

Of course, BC does not put out that kind of effort.
Then again, not too many companies do. Hence, a bunch of mediocre businesses chasing a dwindling pie, utilizing dwindling resources.....

This really isn't a BC issue, but symptomatic of the industry as a whole. BC just followed the leader. Unfortunately, the leader wasn't interested in offering a premium product for premium rates. The attempt was to dilute the quality of the product while getting premium dollar. That gave way to filling unsold units with bonus spots, which led to rate degradation.
Margins maintained thru budgets cuts, which further diluted the product. Clients now are getting what they pay for. A salesman is more than willing to discount a package to make a sale. A smart advertiser can press for a better deal knowing there are other options available. The salesman knows it as well. His product no longer stands above the other sources. THAT is what Corporate broadcasting killed.

They tried to stick a Mercedes nameplate on a Chevette. Now all the sales tactics are gimmicks like you find at a discounter! No quality, no customer service, just LOW PRICES on a marginal product. Two-fers, BOGOs, SAVE BIG!!! Maybe clusters ought to offer client coupons. Uses this coupon to save 35 dollars off your next ad package. Free estimates! Buy 10 60s and get 5 30s free with your next contract* (new customers only, limited availability, cannot combine this coupon with any other offers)
