I found this commentary behind many of the famous photos we've seen interesting.

http://morris.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/25/mirror-mirror-on-the-wall/

At one point in the blog interview, it is said that without the captions, we don't understand the pictures.

True enough!

Anyway, this isn't a Bush bash at all. Just some interesting history and impressions. I like this kind of thing quite a bit. Facial expressions are complex. It's always fun to read others take on them, or get context that highlights just what might be captured there.

That is a fascinating piece, Missing.

It shows Bush at all points of his Presidency. One picture shows him with the bullhorn on the WTC rubble three days after 9/11, the next shows him under the "Mission Accomplished" banner on the USS Abraham Lincoln.

Those two alone point out the yin and the yang of the Bush years.

Along these same lines, here's an interesting Vantity Fair oral history of the Bush White House:

I especially like the picture of Bush and Obama and the shadow.

That is a once in a lifetime shot!

No kidding!

Honestly, all of the photos are great. Love hearing why they picked them, and where they fit into the context of telling us about the former President.

The last 3 pictures discussed are quite surprising. Make sure you check them out.

Brianl, he's been on one hell of a ride. That's one thing that strikes me after viewing the photos.

Not sure he expected what he got out of it, and that's something hinted at by the last set Skep highlighted.

Wouldn't that be an interesting job?

Man, the stuff they've seen! I would jump at the chance to do that kind of work.

I'd love to own that equipment! You know those guys have some serious lenses. In some ways it can be mundane shooting pictures of politicians and events. I have had only a tiny taste of it - certainly not presidential league. There's a lot of waiting around, and a lot of the shots you get when it's "showtime" suck. People's eyes are closed, their mouths open, etc. Of course, you rarely see those outtakes.

So yeah, I'd jump at the chance for a job on a press pool following the president around, but I imagine I'd get tired of it fairly quickly.
