I got to think that there is more qualified radio talent unemployed than those who are currently on the air. What do you think?

I wouldn't say all of the qualified talent are unemployed. Some could have decided to go into another line of work, say one that pays better and you get to say things like "do you want fries with that?"

yes, or at the least, UNDEREMPLOYED....Some great people moved on for a combination of reasons. Some good talents are PT and board oping maybe some sales and voiceovers.... some just replaced by card readers.

The fact is station numbers increased, but staffing decreased. One of the hazards of clustering. 1 owner of 6 stations in a market needs fewer people than 6 owners of 6 stations...

The point is there are indeed some great people on the outside looking in, far more than there should be. Only look to the house cleanings of the recent past, and think of some of the people you might personally know........

I've always thought that it was very appropriate that the word "cluster" has been associated with the radio business for the last few years.

It's clear that there is enough quality staff on this website to run a few stations that are way better than what's currently on the air!

I would encourage my fellow beached broadcasters to reinvent themselves. With today's technology you can earn a pretty decent living doing voice work from your home once you get connected.

One of the benefits of having been a production director for several stations was the ability to contact old clients and make them on-going clients today.

Most pro's have learned some kind of digital software and probably have some equipment they can piece together. Start with the people you already know who own businesses. Think of all the different types of ways in which your voice can help sell, enhance or give a great image to a business or individualS. Be willing to spec something out to see if a client likes it, then if they do, send an invoice.

I'm living a dream while still being able to play radio, even though I'm voice tracking. Don't let the radio purists keep you from your passion. I still enjoy cracking the mic for a daily show, I still get the thrill of doing it without all the BS.

You may be the future, Chris. In an online world, towers and licenses may not mean jack. The only question is how to monitize it so that it's not only a living, it's a damn good one.

Heck, consider the wonderful world of corporate training videos. Boring as hell, I know!

But... a very significant number of these people really, truly suck. Any of you guys should be able to wipe the floor with them, on a bad day, with a cold!

(and there is always HALLS for that)

Yes, there are more talent on the beach.

Most of them are washing up at Oceanside.

Stacey Lynn is off the beach and working with Nelson and Terry.

Newsman Dave Paull has just gone to the beach since KTRO vanished.

I just want to chime in to say that Dave Paull's one of the best I've worked with. His delivery is smooth and warm, his writing is crisp and relatable, and his field work is original and award-winning, no matter how difficult the assignment. He can find the humanity and natural sound in every story. Instead of the latest dry and scary numbers about the jobless rate, he'll go down to the unemployment office and get real people telling their stories. I'm sorry to hear that he's there in another role. Again.

Ditto on Dave. Great guy and friend.

"On the beach." Inaccurate euphemism. Don't like it. "In the toilet" would be more like it. But, then, that would be negative, which we wish not to be.

Thread killer Jeff "Got Any Openings?" Clarke, signing off.

Jeff and Dave.... there's two right there. They have to be equal to at least 12 average people currently on the air...

I see that 5 people have been let go from KGO. I bring this up because one of them was Greg Jarrett. Wasn't he doing mornings on K-News?

Oh, yes. Greg's one of the best news people in the country, and he lives right here in Portland, and commuted to SF. It was a pleasure to hear him on K-News, but he was in his element at KGO. That company is absolutely on the ropes, a penny stock gasping for survival; otherwise they'd never let a talent like Greg get away.
