Oh the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful,
And since we've no place to go,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

It doesn't show signs of stopping,
And I've bought some corn for popping,
The lights are turned way down low,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

We got it solid again here in Forest Grove. Probably 4 inches or so. All of it is currently melting until we fall below freezing today.

Gonna be ugly roads tomorrow.

Here in Hillsboro, we had snow on and off through the afternoon. Most people left work early for fear of the roads becoming dangerous. I put chains on the Excel and did just fine when I drove home around 5:30.

I have a little tire chain story to share: A few years ago, I bought some second-hand but never used tire chains from a co-worker. I tried to use them this week and found out that they were made for slightly larger tires than what are on my car. One set would not stay on, and the other fit loosely. I ended up having to go the Les Schwab in Forest Grove to find chains that fit my car. :-(

Up to the North around Woodland it snowed from 6am till 8pm. About 6 inches or so and tons of cars in the ditches on the side roads. Cars stuck at the bottom of hilly streets, etc. Got home and plowed the driveway with the tractor. If it's bad again tomorrow I may push all of that snow together and make a giant snow fort.

My neighbor made a huge snowman in his front yard!

It looked great until he came out and started pouring Catsup all over the snowman.

Only my neighbor would come up with the idea to build a "bloody" snowman.

And when I say the word "Bloody" I'm not trying to talk like a crazy british person, there really was fake blood on the snowman made out of catsup!

Four. Feet. Of. Snow.

In Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

I had to spend the night in my restaurant ... no way I was getting out. And I am a rather experienced snow driver, doesn't faze me in the least.

I have never seen anything like this in my life. And it's STILL coming down hard!

Looks like about 2" or so in the back yard.

My weather stations says it's 34.3 degrees but it's always a few degrees warm because of where I have the sensor mounted.

I am sitting in a hotel room in Honolulu right now (I'm on a business trip until Saturday, stuck in meetings for a good part of the day), it's about 80 degrees, mostly sunny and feels like it's at least 90% humidity. Not one snowflake in sight. It's sprinkled a little bit earlier this morning (it's about 12:30 right now) but it seems to have stopped.

(Although from what I understand it's supposed to start really pouring rain tonight.)

Snow..........

Good God, this is possibly the very first time I've ever been to Hawai'i and truly wished I was at home...............

Snow is never frightful... annoying from time to time but that's about it. Central Oregon is getting buried too. 2 feet by tomorrow morning.

As for Hawaii. Meh. I've been to tropical locations and I get island fever in that state. Let's see I can drive around the island... and uhm do all the other usual tropical activities. But I can't get in the car and drive drive drive... without going in circles. Gimme Belize or Mexico or Brazil at least those aren't islands.

"As for Hawaii. Meh. I've been to tropical locations and I get island fever in that state. Let's see I can drive around the island... and uhm do all the other usual tropical activities."

Yeah. The company is giving us today as a "free day" because we finished all our official stuff yesterday. We are supposed to head home tomorrow, but I'll likely go to the airport in a bit, book an early flight on Hawaiian and have Dennis come pick me up at PDX tonight. So I'll be using my "free day" to free myself from these trappings.

(Oh yeah, my relatives from a town nearby here--I've mentioned them before in years past--came to pick me up and take me to the hotel on Wednesday. *That* made it all the more disheartening.....)

I've had more than enough of this. Don't get me wrong, I think Hawai'i is an absolutely beautiful state, even more so in the late spring or early summer, right before the tourist season. But sitting in the hotel restaurant listening to The Platters' version of "Jingle Bell Rock" on the Muzak whilst it's raining and 75 degrees, snowing and 20-something at home the week before Christmas, makes me wish I wasn't here! It's hard to make "persuns of snow" out of wet, semi-packed-down beach sand.

(See, if this was my own va-kay my opinions might [would] be different. But this isn't, so they aren't.)

So if I don't post here until really late tonight I'll probably have my head up in the clouds in the meantime, if *I'm* not up in the clouds by then.......

Count me as one who is tired of the snow already. I grew up in it in PA - and that's one reason I never moved back!

I flew back to PA on Thursday for the holidays. Of course it was snowing in Portland as I dragged my bags to the bus/MAX stop, but the plane took off on time. Layover in Phoenix, where it was SUNNY! Damn I wanted to stay - didn't care how warm it was!

Now back in PA we're having even more snow and cold weather. I'm just sick to death of it already and it's only December! Actually I miss the rain too!!! But I'm also scoping out airfares for Hawaii in January!

There is about 8-10 inches here in my back yard.

Weather station says its 26.7 deg F, but it is raining.

Vehicles have 1/8" of ice on them. Had to scrape the Cruiser off so I could go pick up my daughter from a friend’s house.

The roads are slick, but not unmanageable if you are careful.

There is a definite sheen from the ice on them, but braking isn't too bad as long as you are not going too fast!

Tomorrow's commute should be interesting. I drove into Porttown today and all of the side streets were bad. Lots of cars stuck everywhere and at the Napa on columbia Blvd they were parked in the street trying to get in and buy chains!

Chains are now required in Porttland aren't they? When they are required and you get stuck it's a pretty hefty ticket I hear!

I'm snowed in here (Hillsboro). We have not had garbage pickup today, although the mailman did stop by. I'm not leaving the house unless there is some really good reason to do so, and I will likely be taking TriMet. I won't risk sharing the road with people who don't know how to drive in icy and snowy conditions.

The novelty of the snow wore off a long time ago, in my opinion. When I lived in Buffalo and Rochester, this was typical winter weather, but those cities didn't shut down as a result because people were prepared.

Global Warming? Who knows? By looking at a map of the current US temperatures it would be hard to tell. The little warm spell that was going on on the East Coast last week is history. Even the Georgia coast is in the 30s. The warmest spot is the southern tip of Florida, which is at 68 degrees.

Nonetheless, the average global temperatures are slowly creeping up, and the carbon dioxide levels are rapidly going up. It is known that carbon dioxide could help to trap heat in the earth's atmosphere, but there is no good model that says "if the CO2 levels go up by x ppm, global temperatures will go up by y degrees." It is possible that the global temperatures might continue going up, even if humans were successful in stabilizing the CO2. This is why the climate change issue has become so politicized.

No 62, it's "global warming". Note the spelling and positions of the upper and lower case letters. I imagine if the Jargon File had an entry on GW, it might read something like this rather rhetorical paragraph:

"A natural phenomenon relating to Earth's climate wherein global temperatures rise. Global warming has occured in varying degrees of fluctuation since the Earth was formed. However, political propaganda currently abound giving the impression that it is something which has only taken place since the early 20th century, and that it is somehow entirely man-made. It is widely believed the chemical carbon dioxide is involved in man-made global warming, but the real-world effects of it are largely unproven by non-pseudoscientific or non-politicised methods."

(I'm still waiting to hear back from Eric on that one.)

--------------------------------------------------

I was able to manage going to my Folks' place to shovel their driveway and front walk today. Only took me three hours and now my back is aching. Fortunately I put electric floor heating down in the basement several years ago, and I'm boiling down here right now as it is.............

(It's like ceiling heat but in reverse. Not to mention it's waaaaaaaaaaay more efficient.)

Kinda looks like I'll be staying here for most of the week. At least it is far warmer here than the apartment!

Some climate change is going to happen no matter what humans do. The problem is that although scientists can identify specific effects of climatic change (such as if the water temperature goes over so many degrees, salmon can't spawn), our ability to model the overall climate is still somewhat crude.

Cutting back on carbon dioxide emissions requires a change in behavior, and the results of such efforts are uncertain. What aspects of modern society are we willing to give up in or what comfortable habits would we be willing to change in hopes of doing good but without any guarantee of a beneficial outcome? Would American society be willing to accept the construction of new nuclear power plants? Would Americans accept that they need to drive less (say 50% less)? Would Americans warm up to the idea of having to replace their cars? Would Americans be happy if the cost of electricity went up in order to finance building of new power plants to replace coal burning and garbage incinerator plants?

Good!

I did fine too. Was a nice walk. Watched lots of people do stupid stuff with their cars. Waved and said, "hello" to some people I didn't know too.

Dodged a coupla snowballs!

All in all, a nice trip!

Alfredo, to me the point is this: Wouldn't it be better to try and do the right thing, and hope the result is better, than to do nothing and get results that are worse? Or the even the same? Because obviously, things are getting worse now.

Alfredo, my driving is currently job related mostly. If there are alternatives, I would seek them to both reduce my monthly cost dependency overall (less driving), and just for better quality of life.

I'm not so hot on nuclear, unless we really think the waste through, and go the distance on using it fully, not just once for the easy energy score.

Totally would replace my car, if it would really pay off. And that pay off doesn't have to be in terms of dollars per mile. If we get a serious energy advantage in terms of better environmental quality, or sustainability and those things mean jobs too, I'm ok with that.

It can even be more expensive to drive per mile, don't care. (these things would come with driving less, so who cares?)

Things I want to do:

Have most things be walkable. Where I'm at, it's better on that score, but nowhere good enough.

Want to buy local. Really don't like all the big chains. Avoid them as much as I can actually.

Rebuild a home that's sustainable to a high degree. Geo thermal heat, solar power assist, high efficiency design, room to grow food, green house, animals. That, plus buying local would cut me out of most all purchases now going to chains.

Electronics and some niche items would still require that, but I could live with that, given the other things happen some day.

Continue to fix my own stuff. New tech does not have to be closed tech, or extremely difficult tech. Those are not answers to any problems other than those that big companies have trying to get bigger. No value add for me, so no thanks!

Sorry to be a bit off topic, but I suppose the idea of cutting the carbon foot print extends to more than just better cars, or different major sources of energy. IMHO, we need to live a lot leaner than most of us currently do.

Just took a drive with my new chains (yeah!). Now the slush-ruts are even worse than the snow. Quite the mess out there. Let's see, if those things freeze up, it could be wild!

Have not needed chains the last three days except for my own driveway. The last 300 yards have been a real bear! Got my truck stuck twice in my own driveway, had to tug it out with the 4wd tractor! The ruts are finally down to gravel so it's doable now. Had about two feet total accumulation and it can just go away now. The novelty of a Snow is way long over with.

I lost 4 trees on my small city lot.
Much clean-up to do.

On the bright side maybe less shade will make my garden more productive this year.

Huge flakes though when it was snowing.

It'll all be rain by late this afternoon. Classic Portland winter.

Some years ago it snowed 5 inches on March 2. My wife and I have a picture of ourselves just outside the radio station where we worked. By days end it was all gone.
