Radio and Records is reporting that Archer will take over both Prod Dir duties for KINK and pm drive for KHITS. I first heard Archer on KMJK or Z100 (which was it kids??) back in the early 80s....thought he had an incredible voice then...obviously as the RnR site shows he has had quite the career....and now back in PDX.

Archer is an amazing producer. He was Z100's production director from August '86 to July '87. I took over the gig when he left.

I learned a great deal about multi-track production watching Archer work.

Archer!! An INCREDIBLE producer with a great mind for great radio!

I produced his morning show (The Breakfast Q) at Q105 in '88. Worked with him at Z100, too.

Congrats, Archer!

Its more than a rumor folks the station announced it earlier. I love the Beatles and hope K-Hits keeps their featured artist format. They could do an artist or feature a year in rock history.

The Top40/Rock format Q105 had in the late 80's WAS AWESOME! When I think of the old Q105, I think of the Scorpions "Rock you like a hurricane".

Great music and great dj's!!! And most of all, LIVE DJ's!!!!! What a great time for radio!
Is Julie Marletto still in radio today?? I totally forgot about her, she WAS GREAT!

Does anybody have a list of all the jocks that were on the air during the Q105 Top40/rock days?

Not sure if I have the COMPLETE list (somebody..help??)....BUT (in no particular order): Todd Allen/Joe E. King/Larry Rogers/Ron Leonard/Big Jim Ryan/Gloria Johnson/Archer/Julie Marletto/Kristen Scott/Jim Springer/Scott Lander (who?).....

I didn't make the move to Q105 until they moved into the US Bancorp Tower. However, I remember the station when it was in Salem: loud, overmodulated processing that would make your head explode; promos were voiced by J.R. and sounded like he was yelling into a tube; a LOT of ZZ Top/Scorps/Def Leppard/Foreigner/Journey/GNR/White Lion/Skid Row/yada yada yada.....

All in all...VERY fun radio to listen to!

Q-105 slogans:

The best hit music mix and the widest variety, Q-105. You're hearing the Q-105 difference, no rap, no hard stuff and no sleepy elevator music, just the best songs on the radio. Your station for the 90's. The New Sound of Q-105. The best music. Q-105 means music. Portland's fresh choice. Q-105 broadcasting from The Big Pink Tower of Power. The Power Q. Playing The Power Hits. Portland's Power Station.

One of the first live jocks on Q-105 was a Steve Van Somethingorother. I never could make out what that last name really was. Great jock though. He also voiced some stuff in the final months of the automated KSKD including, "Look out, Salem, your 105 is about to COME ALIVE."

The original Q-105, still on the KECH 22 tower, was a real screamer. Not only the jocks but callers were apparently encouraged to scream! I believe they had a 2.8 share, not bad at all for a less than stellar rimshot signal into Portland. The day they switched to the new antenna, KMJK abandoned Top 40 for Classic Rock! After that, Q105 was a strong 2nd to Z100, posting in the 8 share range!

UGH! Thats when Q105 fliped the format to an AC type station. I stoped listening at that point.
I was pissed when the Top40/rock format flipped to an AC station. In fact If I remember correctly, Q105 flipped from a top 40/Rock station to a more AC sounding station when KUFO came on the air, or around that time. I remember when KUFo first came on the air, they were playing the Scorpions, bon jovi ect, a lot of the same stuff that Q105 was playing. I Remember thinking "Man this station sounds a lot like Q105, and a few months later Q105 flipped formats. BUMMER!

Does anybody know when Q105 officially flip format from a top 40/Rock Station to a more lighter AC station?? I'm guessing it Was KUFO that made Q105 flip formats. Kufo probably took away a lot of their listeners.

Justin: Couldn't come up with a format change date but as you can see from the 12+ ratings where the change happened [ranking]:

Spring-87 [9] 4.6, Summer-87 [7] 5.1, Fall-87 [8] 5.3, Winter-88 [8] 5.3, Spring-88 [7] 5.6, Summer-88 [3] 8.0, Fall-88 [3] 7.3, Winter-89 [7] 6.2, Spring-89 [8] 6.2, Summer-89 [3] 7.0, Fall-89 [5] 6.6, Winter-90 [10] 4.3, Spring-90 [11] 4.3.

I did find this excerpt from "The Oregonian" written by Peter Farrell on October 18, 1989:

Another contemporary hit station, KXYQ (105.1 FM), finished third in the rankings for listeners 12 and older, going from a 6.2 to a 7 share.

KXYQ , which went on the air in April 1987, has been highly ranked in other surveys, and has established itself as a major force in Portland radio.

``We're really proud of the good, solid, steady progress we've made,'' said Denice Swanson, general manager. ``We weren't a one-hit wonder, we've grown with the marketplace.'' The station's growth, she said, did not come at the expense of any particular station, ``we just take a little bit from everybody.''

For advertising purposes, most stations stress particular audiences rather than total listeners, and Swanson said she was particularly pleased at KXYQ 's gain among young adults. KKCW led the 18-to-34 age category, with a 12.9 share, followed by KGON's 12.3, KKRZ's 12.2 and KXYQ 's 11.7, which was up from an 8.8 in that demographic.

Steve Van Kleeck was one of the first jocks on Q105.

It was around 90-91 that Q105 started to soften up. It wasn't a sudden change, but a evolution over several months. The idea was to position Q105 between Z100 and K103 and target 25-44 year olds.

Here's a couple more names to add to the Q105 DJ list: Todd & Rick (morning guys before Archer), Inessa, Chris Collins and Michael Jack Kirby.

Here's Archer on Q105 from 1987.

When he said they were broadcasting live from the corner of Burnside and NW Davis, I said to myself that there is no such place. They carried it on for a long time. I wondered about it and the more they promoted it with other "tidbits", I figured it was a spoof. At the very end, they asked callers what was wrong with it and finally someone figured it out. You have to stay till the end. Good show.

THATS RIGHT Xpert it was May of 91. I remember turning on Q105 and hearing the liners The New sound of q105. Those were sad days for me because I LOVED Q105.
"the new sound of Q105 was not for me! If I remember correctly didn't "The New sound of Q105" throw in a few 70's songs, because I remember turning on Q105 and hearing Rod Stewerts "Do you think I'm sexy" and going "What the hell is this crap??? What happend to the Bon Jovi and Def Leppard??
From that day on my sister and I made the switch to Z100, who at the time was still playing stuff like Queensryche and Nelson.

At that point in my life (I'm 32) when Q105 slowly changed formats I think that is also about the time that I slowly drifted over into being a regular listener of KGON until around 99 when I then migrated to being a loyal listener of 94/7.

Steve and Scott:

YES, THOSE were some KICK ASS studios! Was Jim Ryan still using the music tone transistioners after I was out? I remember the day when he informed me that he had found out they were all of by half a note. I tried not to laugh until he left the room. He was one tough PD, but I sure liked working with him.

Another story for you. When Joe E and I were informed of the eventual digs, we decided to road trip it that night to check it all out. Unfortunately, nobody informed us we would not be able to stop the elevator on that floor yet, as it was secured, so we had to go up a few more levels to get off. So after finally being able to stop at 30, we took to the stars to go down as everything else was locked off. Oh, but we also learned, so WAS EVERYTHING. You couldn't leave the stairs and enter a level. What a workout.

Thanks Craig for the flashback on the overall numbers. I still have a copy of my personals from those days. Chet even called to congratulate me as he was a bit pissed, but we were friends.

Thanks, Tvshowguy! I wondered were Dave Endres ended up, as I lived down near him at McCormick Pier back then.

Hey, Steve! Good job on Steve Van Kleek! In fact, when Q105 started in Salem, there was also Mark Townsend (mornings) and Justin (overnights). I can't remember his last name, but he was a former ambulance driver. Rolled a couple I guess.

I gotta admit, I LOVED what we were able to do then. I only enjoyed two years because I kind of upset Ryan one night, but it was one of my favorite stations to really do it all and enjoy a real "radio fight" while having fun too! I was able to utilize much of what I learned at Z as well, so it made it all that much more fun.

FYI, Nag. I just found my KYTE frisbee the other day as I was cleaning out more boxes. Managed to find some beginning Z and Q ones too. Archer "I Q Test" in there too.

OK, it's late. Later.

I can remember a few that sounded pretty decent if the song ending was a natural because you could fire up the transitioner sooner to sound like it was actually transitioning to the next. But out of the 235 (I think that was the count) there was not much worth using. :-):-):-)
