This from All Access:

-----------------------------KRVC Gets Hot-----------------------------

OPUS BROADCASTING has flipped KRVC/MEDFORD-ASHLAND, OR from Country to Top 40 as "HOT 98-9." The station will lead off two major syndicated personalities KIDD KRADDICK in mornings and RYAN SEACREST in afternoons, then follow them with local talent in the other dayparts.

"We felt there was a great opportunity to launch a hit music station for SOUTHERN OREGON that played all the hits," Pres./GM DEAN FLOCK commented. "The ability to secure great programming in key dayparts from KIDD and RYAN made it a no-brainer. Over the last two years, Alternative KROG has become a consistent market leader with adults 18-34 and 18-49. Meanwhile, Classic Rock/Adult Hits hybrid KCNA (THE DRIVE) has developed as one of the top stations 25-54 since its launch two years ago with a very unique mix of rock hits from the '70s, '80s and '90s. We believe HOT 98-9 will do the same by delivering SOUTHERN OREGON a great variety of today’s hit music."

RADIOCRUNCH Pres. ANTHONY ACAMPORA will consult the station, whose core artists on include CHRIS BROWN, PINK, JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, KELLY CLARKSON, NICKELBACK, RIHANNA and DAUGHTRY.

KLDR 98.3 FM, what is up with their rating?

They tend to be below 1.0 in the rating, plus they have adaquate coverage around Medford area with translators.

98.3 KLDR isn't programmed nearly as well as it could be. Plus, the translators (98.1 and 99.7) don't put much signal into Medford or Ashland.

Speaking of 99.7 FM translator in Ashland. I cannot find the information in the FCC database. I only find the translator in Wolf Creek OR which is too far to be recieve in Ashland OR.

Another thing. 94.7 KRRM. How come this station doing ok in the ratings if there signal doesn't cover Medford and Ashland very well?

Wolf Creek Oregon is where King Mountain is, nearly 7000' elevation... direct line of sight to Medford/Ashland.

Yes, 99.7 (Wolf Creek) can be received in Ashland.

94.7 KRRM has a unique Country/Americana format with a loyal following. Listeners are apparently putting up with the less than ideal signal.

KBOY was already classic rock when I lived there in the 70's and 80's. When everyone was listening to disco, new wave and every other new kind of music that swept the country, they kept on playing the trusty classic tunes of the Eagles and Deep Purple, waiting for the music to come back in style as soon as the weird stuff passed.

Wait a minute from 1982-1985 KBOY was CHR when I was there. Worked for Rick St. Clair, with Doc Jones, Chris Leonard, Dusty Roads and Bill Dawson.
We were definitely CHR with a dance leaning. I will never forget when Doc brought in our first copy of Purple Rain and declared "this is the greatest album ever!". LOL!
We played ALL of those dang Micheal Jackson singles when "Thriller" came out and then when the record label sent a song that MJ did when he was like 12, called "Farewell my Summer Love" I remember Rick saying "no F-ing way" and we did NOT play it! Great station, it went classic rock AFTER 1985 and we were competing with KTMT at the time.

OHMIGOD. Doc Jones. That's a name I haven't heard in quite a while...I never worked with him directly, just heard the stories and met him a couple of times. No sitcom writer would ever be able to create a radio character that came close to the utter bee-zarness that was Doc.

I first heard 95.7 KBOY in '89, when they were "Southern Oregon's Best Rock." 96.9 KFMJ and 102.7 KCNA were the other AOR's in the market, although they more focused on Grants Pass, than Medford.
When exactly did KBOY move from 95.3 to 95.7? This move must have been related to Eugene's 95.3 KZAM, which signed on in '84.

OK doc jones stories for your radiodawgz:
doc lived most of the time behind the station in an alley in his car, I think a 60's era plymouth or chevy. It was "held" together by hundreds of radio station bumper stickers.
He would bring a huge pickle jar of water into the studio and two rolls of paper towels, then lock the door. You could see in while he was on, and during that shift, he would dip the towels into the water jar and wipe himself off then throw the paper all over the studio, while screaming obscenities at the air.
He was GREAT ON the air, but not away from the mic.
I learned a lot from him, mostly how not to go insane.
I don't know whatever happened to him but he was a certified nut when I worked with him.
Craig: I know the frequency change was in late 1984, but KBOY was still CHR at that time. We in fact did a week long stint at the Jackson County Fair and had to tell everyone about the change.
I left in Jan or Feb of 1985 so the change must have been right around that time.

Hey Dodger - My ex-husband, Marty McGuire, used to tell me about working with him, so yeah, I heard those...also that he never bathed, was intensely paranoid and that he'd take his drivers license out, put it on the copy board in front of him and broadcast to it. He rode up on his bike while I was doing mornings at a station down there and introduced himself. "Hello Lady DJ!" he said.

Interesting experience...wonder if anyone knows what became of him.

Radioxpert>>This move must have been related to Eugene's 95.3 KZAM, which signed on in '84.

Not likely. The minimum co-channel mileage separation between the old 3Kw Class A stations was only 65 miles. Even at 71 miles at 6Kw, both could have easily co-existed. KBOY-FM's move was purely a power and height upgrade. The old antenna was 225 ft below average terrain. 95.3 used to be one of the FM frequencies that was reserved for Class A.

What year was the class A restriction for these frequencies eliminated? It's hard to imagine FM radio without C1, C2, and C3 signals. :-)

Doc Jones! Oh my gosh, he is/was a treat. A buddy of mine worked at KTMT back in the day and the first time he met Doc, he was in a dark room with a blue light and all he said was ... "why the hell do you want to be in radio?"

Kind of funny considering I ask myself that question daily these days :-)

Opus would be wise to flip KRVC to AAA, as "98.9 The River" or something like that. With "Mix 93" and "Kiss FM" providing much better coverage, 98.9 will never succeed as a CHR or Hot AC. Triple A is the only big format hole to be filled in Medford/Ashland. Maybe someone at Opus will finally get a clue!

JPR's "Rhythm & News" format doesn't sound anything like KINK or Clear 101-7. I'm talking about a commercial AAA format, which plays the "hits."

Understood radioexpert, however its the same target demo... just one being "safer" than the other. And one having way less commercials.

I suspect if OPB Music was on FM rather than HD2 it would give KINK a run too.

There is an application for a new AM station licensed to Medford. They're asking for 50kw non-directional daytime and 1kw nights with 2 towers on 830. The map shows the daytime 5mv/m contour encompassing Ashland and Grants Pass. Because of terrain issues, the station won't go very far north or south, even at 0.5mv but will still cover Central Point. At 2mv/m, they will nearly reach Klamath Falls and at 0.5mv/m, the coastline from just south of Port Orford to well south of Crescent City. It looks like nighttime coverage of Medford and immediate area will be fine, excluding Ashland.

Not to be outdone, another party has applied for 2 stations in Merlin, near Grants Pass: 1kw fulltime with 3 towers on 1320 and the other with 5kw daytime non-directional and 4kw nighttime with 4 towers on 1520. The 0.5mv/m daytime contour of the latter will reach Medford.
