    This from TVSpy:

KGW Selling Helicopter, Will Share with FOX Affiliate

NBC affiliate KGW is selling its news helicopter.

News director Richard Jacobs confirmed with TVSpy, the station chopper is listed for sale on a site a tipster sent us. http://www.nwhelicopters.com/nwh/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=231:bell-407-n808tv&catid=32&Itemid=88.

He said the station had entered into a shared helicopter agreement with FOX affiliate KPTV, but went quiet when we asked for more details about the agreement and wouldn’t say what was going to happen to KGW’s helicopter pilot.

A spokesperson for the company selling the helicopter told TVSpy the chopper was first listed in the Fall and is going for $1,250,000.

TVSpy has asked KGW’s parent company Gannett and KPTV for more info. We will update when we hear back.

Is there a general trend away from the use of TV news 'copters or is this an isolated event in markets of this size?

In a market like Portland that stretches from the coast to the mountains, a chopper can cover a lot of ground, fast. The downside is, it's not just the purchase or lease price of a helicopter that eats into the budget: they are incredibly expensive to maintain with a lot more moving parts that require more frequent inspections and tear-downs.

A station used to get more use out of a helicopter with live traffic updates, but now that state and local governments have blanketed highways with webcams, the need for a helicopter for traffic coverage isn't quite what it used to be. They can give a different visual perspective than a webcam, but station management has to decide if that perspective is a cost they can justify, or a luxury that they might potentially not be able to afford.

And, there's always the possibility of a news camera drone replacing the helicopter at some point.

You may have pointed out why they're getting rid of the chopper.
