I'm new to this forum. To start my first post, I would like to start with the ratings for Portland, Oregon. Here they are:

    KUPL: Country: Alpha: 7.3
    KKCW: AC: Clear Channel: 7.0
    KOPB: N/T: Oregon Public: 6.3
    KWJJ: Country: Entercom: 6.1
KLTH: Classic Hits: Clear Channel: 5.7
    KXL-FM: N/T: Alpha: 5.5
KKRZ: Top 40/M: Clear Channel: 5.2
    KGON: Classic Rock: Entercom: 5.0
    KYCH-FM: Adult Hits: Entercom: 4.7
    KINK: AAA: Alpha: 4.5

Taking first place is KUPL, branded as 98.7 The Bull, and taking second place is KKCW, branded as K103, and taking last place is KINK, branded as kink.fm.

Wow. Portland first asks for AC, now their asking for Country? Weird.

Note, that this is the Top Ten.

    Welcome.

As you can see, no one is running away from the pack, and they are all corporate big group stations (except OPB) that are primarily directed by corporate string pullers that only provide lip service to local input.

When the top ten is so congested with only a 2.8 point spread between #1 and #10, that pretty much sums up the quality of choices available as equal to no great choices.

As far as "AC" or "Country," historically these formats have always done well in Portland's ratings. However, when local ownership existed and implemented great programming, the spread in the ratings was greater.

This is what I call the "fruit cocktail" effect. Nothing dominates the flavor in a can of fruit cocktail. The peaches, pears, pineapple and cherries all seem to taste the same. So it is for every station in that top ten. Predictable, boring and not well programmed for Portland.

Clearly there is not at this time a single station in Portland that is doing any better than the other guys. What I'd like to see, but I'm too uninterested to do the math, is how the Clear Channel stations in Portland sum up to and compare to Entercom, Alpha, etc. Also the per station average in the cluster.
