Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R) of Georgia is the latest lawmaker to formally renege on the pledge. In a television interview on Wednesday, he said that he's no longer supporting the pledge because "times have changed significantly, and I care more about my country than I do about a 20-year-old pledge."

Such breaks in GOP ranks could become decisive as GOP leaders negotiate with Democrats and the White House over how to resolve the "fiscal cliff," or some $600 billion in mandatory spending cuts and tax increases set to take effect in 2013.

Every Republican who is coming out of the woodwork and is willing to accept a revenue increase are only willing to do it through elimination of deductions. It's a red herring - all they desperately want is to see all the Bush tax cuts extended, not just those for income below $250k. They know that any agreement to reduce deductions will extend into 2013, at which time they can continue to block and filibuster. The Republicans are a party grasping at straws - they KNOW a return to Clinton-era rates for income over $250K will not hurt the economy, and in fact the additional revenue will only help. They KNOW that higher taxes on the rich will motivate them to keep money in the company rather than take it out as compensation, and this will spur growth and hiring. They know the 'jig is up' if we go off the fiscal cliff and find that it's a speed bump rather than the Grand Canyon. I've never enjoyed Republican kabuki as much as have since Nov. 7.
