The police department in Glendale, another St Louis suburb, said Friday it had suspended one of its officers who had expressed contempt for the Ferguson protesters on his Facebook account.

"I'm sick of these protesters. You are a burden on society and a blight on the community," wrote Michael Pappert, in one of at least five posts that have gone up since Sunday.

"These protesters should have been put down like a rabid dog the first night," he added.

In a reference to the Boston Marathon bombing, he also wrote: "Where is a Muslim with a backpack when you need them."

Michael Brown of Ferguson, Missouri, is at least the fifth unarmed black man to be killed by a white police officer in the past month (along with Eric Garner of Staten Island, John Crawford of Ohio, Ezell Ford of Los Angeles, and Dante Parker of Victoville California). Most of the residents of Ferguson are black; almost all its police officers are white. Yet a new Pew poll shows Americans sharply divided over whether the shooting of Michael Brown raises an important issue of race. While 62% of white Democrats think it does, 61% or Republicans think it doesn’t, and that the issue of race has got too much attention in the shooting. On what planet are those who don’t believe race is at issue here living? ~Robert Reich

I'm not so sure that's it's so much a race issue as it is a trigger-happy cop issue.

Not sure this is an either or. It is for sure trigger happy. Racial tensions may well just be adding to it as much as they could be driving it.

There are individuals who think that a thug attacking a cop, smacking him in the face, trying to take his gun, then charging at him is not a reason to get shot. Let's put you in that same position and see if stopping this 292 lb pile of blubber in the only means at your disposal might not be your choice of the moment.

Why is it so hard to understand that if you attack a cop you just might get shot.

It hasn't been proven he attacked a cop. The autopsy supports so far there was no real attack.

As for the cops, what it comes down to is they view blacks as less than human. They may not be outright racists, but they'll pull the trigger on a black person but not a white person in the same circumstance.

"It hasn't been proven he attacked a cop."

So, that must mean that your view is that he was just strolling by, peacefully enjoying a fine summer evening, and this racist cop drives up and shoots him.

We'll see if that scenario stands the test of time or not.

Anytime a cop shoots and kills an unarmed person, regardless of race, there's a problem in my book. And the problem has to do with the police falling back on the easy thing to do, shoot them dead.

Taser? Billy club? Why do officers carry these if they don't use them?

Would it change your view if it was found out that the white police officer had a lot in common with his co-workers who are currently on leave due to their racist rants online and on video? I don't doubt for a second that the things those guys said online and on video are also held by a large body of the police.
