A Gresham bakery that refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, prompting a state investigation, shut its doors.

On Sunday, KGW stopped by Sweet Cakes by Melissa and found the bakery completely empty. All counter tops, display cases and decorations were gone.

Hanging in the window was a sign from the Oregon Family Council that read "Religious freedom is under attack in Gresham."

No, religious freedom is not under attack. Bigoted jerks are though, and let this be a classic example of how NOT to run a business. Good riddance!

    Awww...

The First Amendment is not a shield. Negative speech against others for things they have no control over has consequences.

Perhaps they can contemplate that for a while and reopen at some point in the future as much improved citizens.

It really sucks that it has to come to things like this. But then again, it really sucks to be discriminated against too.

Besides, they have complete religious freedom! Nobody is saying that can't be bigots. They are completely free to do that.

Lots of people apparently are saying they would much rather not do business with bigots.

And there the cycle completes. The answer to offensive free speech is more free speech. Everyone has spoken.

    Oh, note this:

"This will be our last weekend at the shop we are moving our business to an in home bakery. I will post our new number soon.”"

A business, by bigots for bigots. That's fair game too. It will be a much smaller club, as it should be.

    And:

"All of the comments on the bakery's Facebook page are largely supportive of the business.

“I'm sorry to hear this. Its very frustrating to have people do all they can to cause others strife just because they don't agree with a lifestyle. I will keep you all in my prayers. Don't let them get you down. You will survive this and all other tests through your faith. God bless Melissa,” one woman writes."

Of course they are! Managers of business pages are completely free to prune the comments they don't like.

Seems that all those people in support aren't of sufficient size to support a business, or they don't put their money where their mouth is. Probably they get the much cheaper chain store cakes, because you know, Jesus and money.

Fox 12 says that they're not closing completly, they're moving. She now plans to run it out of her home.

It's a bit funny how God isn't helping them out here.

Those that demand tolerance always demonsrate that they are the least tolerant of all.

Oh, and why should anybody grant respect or deference to people who treat other people like shit?

And I can put this really simple:

Racism, bigotry and theocracy are never OK. Now, unless you want to come up with a reason why those things are OK, the simple fact is, nobody should tolerate them and those people got what was coming.
