A country music singer was shot dead inside a Tennessee bar after the owner spotted the man lighting a cigarette in a non-smoking section over the weekend, authorities said.

The deadly spat unfolded after Jerald (Wayne) Mills, 44, of the Wayne Mills Band, allegedly lit up inside the Pit and Barrel bar in downtown Nashville about 5 a.m. Saturday, after the club closed, WKRN-TV reported.

The bar’s owner, Chris Ferrel, 44, started to argue with the crooner — who was a popular performer on the college circuit — as a small group of patrons began to leave the club.

But the people heard gunshots as soon as they stepped out of the bar and called police — who arrived moments later to find Mills with a bullet in his head, the news station reported.

The bleeding man — who officials with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department mistakenly identified as songwriter Clayton Mills after witnesses gave the wrong name — was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he died later in the day.

Police were reluctant to cuff Ferrell, who legally owned the gun used in the shooting, after he told investigators he only fired because he felt Mills was a threat, The Tennessean reported.

Former law abiding gun owner stood his ground apparently.

It will be interesting to see if Mills was armed as well. If he's not, I don't buy self defense. If he was armed, well, then he got what he was looking for.

What's really scary to me is how law enforcement is handling this.

It's sad that he should get shot for lighting up a cigarette when making country music should be reason enough.
