No such thing as editing anymore is there ???Posted on July 12, 2013 - 06:34 PM #
Deane, it is not politcally correct to laugh at this. But I did too. As a prank, this is priceless. It also makes an important point about how even big market tv stations filter their news.
That being said, a third person has died in the crash, and God Bless those who were severely injured.
I think sometimes laughter is a good release when bad things happen.Posted on July 12, 2013 - 06:41 PM #
What makes it both funny and bad is the fact it got past so many people, including the NTSB who confirmed the names. Figure out how that could happen.
As a TV station editor, you become suspicious and call the NTSB in DC for confirmation and they confirm the names. Now what do you do? I still would not have gone to air with them at that point. Being first is not always best.
BTW, being politically correct is not one of my strong characteristics. As a matter of fact, I hardly even work at it.Posted on July 12, 2013 - 06:45 PM #
Yes, as for laughing at these names, I stated "I did too". Not because I'm racist, but just because these names were very funny.
Again, I measure this with the pain that this accident caused for many.
Politically correct has never been an issue on this site, and normal human reactions are accepted here, for the most part.Posted on July 12, 2013 - 06:53 PM #
I can't believe this made it to air! What a massive fail!
I can't stop laughing, and I feel guilty about it.Posted on July 12, 2013 - 06:53 PM #

Here is a recent update on story. Which includes a statement released from the NTSB...Posted on July 12, 2013 - 07:04 PM #
Somehow, it doesn't seem comforting to have information like this coming from interns at the NTSB. Even with an intern, how could the individual respond with "yup, those are all good to go".
KTVU's explanation that they didn't sound them out is certainly plausible, especially under time pressure to make the noon news dead line.
San Fransisco has to be one of the worst places in the country to have a major goof up like this with Chinese names.Posted on July 12, 2013 - 07:13 PM #
